Number One Issue with Three Statement Modeling
Просмотров 2789 месяцев назад
In this video, I discuss the number one issue I see with three statement modeling, which is using the statement of cash flows to reverse engineer the balance sheet. I explain why this approach is prone to error and circularity. Instead, I recommend using the statement of cash flows to reference the information already present in the income statement and balance sheet. By doing so, you can avoid...

Hi Chris, could you please make a tutorial video of WPS and integrated with google sheets. Tks in advance
That’s awesome, thanks! I used to do this with a helper column and SEQUENCE, but will switch to this for sure
Great!
Nah, you weren't using Excel, you would have pressed like 55 quadrilion times the arrows and the enter keys
Looks like you caught me!
Please how can I get a copy of the excel sheet
Hey, this is part of my paid program. Here's the site if you're interested, no pressure: www.financialmodelingeducation.com/
Relate 😂
We can stick together!
Yeahhh 😂😂😂
Same, but with Word and Google Docs.
Very similar for me lol
Sooo me 😂😂😂
Good to hear I'm not alone!
Hi Chris, thank you for the explanation and time. Is this happening in a new legal entity? Where the new legal entity recognizes the goodwill of the acquired company
Hey Franklin that's correct. The Goodwill stays on the books of the new entity and typically amortized over [10] years.
Google Sheets looks simple but shiiiiit!! This me everyday at work 😂😂 I miss working in Excel 😂
It took me about two years to get comfortable with Google Sheets.
Thật tuyệt vời ❤❤❤
Can relate 100%
Good to know I'm not alone!
Sheets is free and for the 2 times a year I need it it's worth for me. I use Docs way more.
That makes sense!
Thanks for sharing Chris, keep it up man.
Hey thanks so much, I appreciate that.
Large cos Excel Startups google sheet For Microsoft, ms office is their core. For google, it is search engine
Google Sheets is the Type of Work you do after a Workout
Lol love this.
@@chrisreillyfinancialmodeling Appreciate it
Like excel cause of the design, look and feel. BTW so true
thanks 👨💻
lol
I think that *both* Excel and Google sheets are really good. Historically, I have used Excel more so I have just stuck with it. It is amazing now, Excel. I started off, 35 years ago, on Lotus 1-2-3.
Lotus & Wordperfect was the bomb
hahahah yeah same situation like me
Glad I'm not alone!
Excel is like landline, Sheets modern smartphone.
great video.
I’d see him with iOS numbers
And then theres me being terrible at both 😭
I've been there! Just takes practice 🙂
Awesome & PERFECT!!! Exactly what I needed, the formula. I now can manipulate that to my needs.
Great! I'm thrilled to hear that.
it's hated like Google+
Так и есть!
I hate Google sheets
Great explanation Chris!
Thanks Josh!
In the BASE method, is it good practice to bring in the actuals in the beginning or closing balance to true it up every month, ie bring in actual Accounts Receivable
@@dlebe029 Yes, but it gets a little hairy. Here's what I typically do: Build a formula that triggers the Actual ending balance when the books close. All "BASE stuff" only works in the future, not the past. Then, there's a separate formula to model out the collection of the Beginning Balance. So you're usually looking at adding another line. Thanks for mentioning this!
me who use Numbers from Apple 🗿
I feel using excel on windows is also way better than on Mac, Windows allows you to access any component via the alt shortkeys
I am the same way Glad to know I am not alone
Definitely not!
Omg 😱 thank you!
Sure thing!
You don't really need to move your mouse in excel, just Alt+.... All in hand, yes
I will go head to head with you any day - Me: Sheets on my Pixel phone (yes I'm a beast!) , You: Excel for Desktop. Just need the task we'll compete on 😄
compete with one of this player ruclips.net/video/QwNoFOUiSiE/видео.html
Okay so it’s not just me…
Great explanation. Understood the meaning of circularity breaker. Other videos take more than 20 mins to explain this
Thanks! Sorry it's so blurry. I'm going to make a new one.
I really wish Google Sheets had tables. And can create a new row in a table by clicking tab. That's the worst thing about Google Sheets.
Agreed. No tables is such a dagger.
They do have now.
Can you transpose in sheets?
Yes use the =transpose(Range)
Hi Chris! I'm enrolled in your course on LinkedIn, and it has been a rewarding experience for me. I have watched several of your videos, but I couldn't find any examples of firms with a more complex capital structure, such as those paying dividends. Could you please point me to some examples? Thank you
Hey! Thanks so much for taking the LinkedIn course. I don't have anything specific on dividends, but do you mean dividends from public companies or more like distributions from private companies?
@@chrisreillyfinancialmodeling thank you for your quick reply. Yes! It’s a public company I’m following your videos with real data from Edgar files quarterly.
I believe the issue I'm encountering is due to the calculation of operating account liabilities. When we subtract the current period from the previous period, we consistently obtain results which aligns with the company's cash flow statement. However, when it comes to dividends, the formula "Dividends = Change in Retained Earnings + Net Income" yields a positive number. I suspect this discrepancy arises because dividends represent an outflow, so I need to apply a negative sign to the result. Does that sound accurate to you?
@@renatakellisouza4138 hey so the formula usually goes like this: Beginning Retained Earnings + Net Income - Distributions = Ending Retained Earnings. Hope this helps!
@@chrisreillyfinancialmodeling Thank you Chris!
Cool
Always a fun part of the tournament!
BOTH ARE AWESOME
I've finally come around to Sheets. Took two years.
Impressed with how dynamic you make all of this, Chris!
Thanks Josh! Means a lot coming from you!
i’m the exact opposite
Me hahha
Did I ever tell you that you are a genius? Keep doing the good work mate
Thanks I really appreciate that! A lot more videos coming soon.
@@chrisreillyfinancialmodeling I am waiting!
I’ve actually really grown to really like and kind of prefer google sheets now! Still got love for excel though.
I've grown to like it too! Been using it about two years now which is hard to believe. Excel is still my comfort zone though!
what about 1 quarter in the past??
Hey not sure on that one; I haven't had to use it in the modeling setting, but I'm sure there's a way (I'll have to research it).
Just add a -3 before the last bracket! =EOMONTH(date,MOD(3-MONTH(date),3)-3)
seria como un autocad vs autocad online jajaja
So true
I’m exactly the opposite, Google sheets looks better and there are a lot of plugins, Excel website is not the same as the desktop app
