SNAICC Conference September 2017
Lucy Van Sambeek presents "The Magic of Metaphors: How we are Engaging Women at Risk to Prevent Trauma in Young Children".
Lucy is a co-founder of the ‘Healing Our Children’ project, an early intervention and prevention initiative based in Darwin and providing outreach to the Tiwi Islands, Palmerston and Katherine. The project was developed by Aboriginal women for Aboriginal women to invite them into non-shaming conversations about the effects of violence on children, to promote safety and to prevent trauma. From her experience using narrative therapy, Lucy speaks about the power of nature metaphors as a tool in engaging vulnerable women in dialogue.

I saw a sod remover. Did that work for a circular shape like the labyrinth? I was thinking of renting one for the same thing. Thanks.

Amazing! Any chance that you could outline the steps to make one? Maybe bullet points or like a recipe. Start with a point of centre, tie string to make concentric circle, spray paint or mark your map marking and turns, rototiller to dig the earth, edging with x y z, etc etc Thanks in advance!

We find the labyrinth all over the world. Very ancient ones. It shows the path of life from mankind. The labyrinth shows the increase and decrease of the world population during a cycle of seven world eras. The eras are separated by a natural disaster that is caused by the ninth planet in our solar system. This cycle is the curse of our Planet Earth. To learn much more about the cycle of civilizations and its timeline, recurring floods and ancient high tech, read the e-book:"Planet 9 = Nibiru" You can read it nicely on any computer, tablet or smartphone. Just search for: invisible nibiru 9

Thankyou to the women of Wurrumiyanga for sharing their stories about the journey of recovery from trauma and how it can be challenging to deal with the problems faced daily. What really caught my attention is the sentiment that ' always someone there to help you' - support around us to give us strength- the women spoke about family, sitting , sharing but also even when 'get away from it all'- that 'spirits and ancestors know why you there' and that 'you can sense that they are there'... so really you are never really alone. This sense of connection seemed highly valued as did the connection to country and culture- a sense of belonging and knowing where you belong and passing this knowing on to those who follow by 'gathering around singing, telling stories- showing us'. Listening to the women speak it said to me that they hold lots of knowing about how to get and keep strong, and what the healing journey may look like for them and their community. I am really looking forward to sharing the womens words with the Tramalla Strong Women Group in Kalumburu who have also been talkiing and sharing about what keeps them strong when times are tough. Their videos are also on vimeo. ( search words- Kalumburu, Telling Story) I can't wait to hear their reflections on these stories. I listened to the women and thought about how I would like to make more time to sit quietly in front of a fire or quietly be in nature and have a chance to think and feel without distractions ( particularly my phone!). It reminded my how healing and energising going for a camp is for me- even if I can only grab a couple of nights....how I love sitting around at night and sharing stories with friends and how much I love camp fires! The women reminded me that even if I go for a camp by myself I'm not really alone...I will think of them all next time I am sitting on my swag in front of a fire.

It was great to hear the enthusiasm of the Tiwi women involved, not only the person who was speaking to Lucy, but the others in the background as well. I got a great sense of fun and creativity, as well as respect, coming from the women as I listened. Some other things that stood out for me were: • The blending of traditional Tiwi ways and ideas from Catholic religion • The healing that comes from traditional ways of hunting & food gathering • The power of song • The use of natural remedies for healing, and the ways that links to country and natural things such as fire can help with healing - Barry Sullivan (Relationships Australia)
