How pissed must guys have been that ordered this event hoping to see like blood and guts 😂😂 not a single solitary punch thrown and the fights finished 😂😂😂
Everyone yelling fight fight fight cause they knew nothing about BJJ. Nobody had seen this style and the ignorance was awesome.. this is when MMA was born. Wrestlers and BJJ students owned the ring
The cluelessness of the announcers and the referee is astounding. Guy pounds the mat 6 times. Referee stares blankly, eventually figures it out. Announcer says "I didn't see him tap." Who is that guy, Stevie Wonder?
UFC just has a long history of hating boxers for some weird reason lmao, they get a boxer with no wins against any actual legends and call him an “elite boxer” 😂 I get why they did it because boxing was and still is there biggest competition but still, super sad
UFC 1 was crazy. How was even allowed for a fifhter to wear a glove. And Gracie was smart and sneaky, but he would not survive in this era in any divisuon since all fighters are well rounded with skills. RIP one man glove
This reminds me when a prey animal is in the grips of a powerful predator... we all realize it is over for the prey animal and all you can do is stand back and watch it go down.
A new ESPN article better explains why Art tapped so fast. Apparently he ran into Big John McCarthy right before the match (no joke, John was a sparring partner and friend of Royce), and he was full of confidence. HE threw some jabs and asked John how Royce would deal with the jab. Then John laughed, and basically said "Throw your jab at me and watch this", and proceeded to take Art down on the floor of the hallway. Apparently John then got up, and was like "Omg he's going to break my arms and legs isn't he?" or something close. LOL. So dude was scared as hell and tapped fast.
Yeah, plus Art's manager was warning him to escape because people were getting their teeth knocked out. A great deal of fighting is mental, so when you're confidence and resolve begin to slip, well, that's the ball game. The article also answered the question why he chose to use one glove, which confused me back in the 90's when I saw the fight. It's a shame fighting Gracie took such a negative toll on his boxing career, but I'm glad he's starting to embrace his place in MMA history now.
I believe he also had a boxing fight scheduled and was afraid of breaking his hand hence the one glove... As to why he literally didn't try to punch at all I dono lol.
That fool had no chance....then he decided to wear boxing gloves...lol😅
Why did he have a single boxing gloves? Why wear boxing gloves?

This nga got one glove on 🤣
obvious hand picked fight by rorion. but where are the gracies now?
Boxing gloves against someone who grapples. What an idiot!
It's wild to me that referees often didn't see taps, or just ignored them. MMA refs have come a long way.
The booing cracks me up.
RIP 🙏🏽😭
Was chillin munching out in the kitchen, and i just randomly thought of this man. R.I.P AJ
Rip art

Brilliant announcers question the wisdom of Gracie wearing a jiu jitsu gi. Neither thinks it's at all odd that the boxer is wearing one boxing glove.

Matt Arroyo?

If you knew about this fight before JRE 1622 then you’re more of a fight fan than I!
I did!!!!
🤣 every now and then this fight pops in my head and I have to watch it!🥊🤣👍🏽 Also they talk about Gracie wearing his top and not the boxing glove?!🤣
the mother of all MMA

That article is why I’m here…very well-written piece

i wonder what woudve happened if he was confident in his boxing and actually threw something in the match

Art saved himself from getting physically hurt.
He knows he was going to lose so he tapped
It's not only that. If you don't practice jiu jitsu, having someone on top of you alone can cause claustrophobia.
Mucha ventaja para el que practica Jiu Jit Su,en una pelea de verdad vale absolutamente todo.
Se valía de todo compeñero hasta jalar el pelo en esos tiempos y rasguños Menos golpes bajos
