    Hello, thank you for a wonderfully informative video. Would you have any idea what I can use as a substitute for the expanded shale? I love the idea of expanded shale but in Southern Illinois I have no access to it without paying a fortune for it. I need to break up my heavy clay soil. What else could I substitute for the expanded shale? Thank you again for such a great video.

    If a Crape Myrtle freezes all the way back to the ground, and I trim off all of the damage, will it stay small or will it grow to its normal height(as in a Natchez Crape Myrtle, which can reach 40')?

    What I like is that no root ball scoring was done. 👍 Scoring the root ball is not only unnecessary, it can lead to inhibiting the over health of the tree.

    Mine did not flower this year any suggestions?

    • @j.berrynursery
      @j.berrynursery Год назад

      If your Black Diamond Crapemyrtle did not flower this year, there are several factors that could be contributing to this issue. Here are some suggestions to help encourage flowering in the future: Sunlight: Crapemyrtles thrive in full sun. Ensure that your plant is receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Lack of sufficient sunlight can inhibit flowering. Pruning: Over-pruning or incorrect pruning can lead to reduced or no flowering. Crapemyrtles typically bloom on new growth, so avoid heavy pruning in late summer or fall, as this can remove the potential flower buds for the next year. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth and flowering. Fertilization: Proper fertilization can influence flowering. Too much nitrogen fertilizer can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Use a balanced fertilizer or one that is slightly higher in phosphorus to encourage flowering. Apply fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer. Watering: Ensure that your crapemyrtle is receiving adequate water, especially during dry spells. Consistent moisture is important, but avoid over-watering, which can lead to root rot. Soil: Well-draining soil is essential for the health and flowering of crapemyrtles. If the soil is too compacted or waterlogged, it can affect the plant's ability to bloom. Consider amending the soil with organic matter to improve drainage. Maturity: Young crapemyrtle plants may take a few years to become well-established and reach flowering maturity. Be patient and give the plant time to establish its root system. Pest and Disease Control: Check for any signs of pests or diseases that could be affecting the health of your plant. Aphids, powdery mildew, and other issues can impact flowering. Treat any problems promptly. Climate: Crapemyrtles can be sensitive to colder temperatures, especially in cooler climate zones. Make sure your plant is in a suitable hardiness zone and consider protecting it from harsh winter conditions. If you address these factors and provide proper care, your Black Diamond Crapemyrtle should have a better chance of flowering in the future. Remember that it's not uncommon for plants to have occasional off-years, so be patient and continue to provide good care to encourage healthy growth and blooms.

    If you have any of these or any crape myrtle for that matter and live in the south east (and if your here you probably have one) I highly recommend purchasing a systemic drench to ward off the crape myrtle bark scale. Your local home improvement store will have it. It isn't cheap it's necessary. If you notice any darkening of the bark or small white bugs better not wait. The drench takes weeks to get up the tree. These bugs can make your tree look like it's been in a camp fire. And they don't waste time.

    I just found the Magenta at my local Tractor Supply. I had no idea these existed but I now have two to add to my garden. I am hoping to find a couple of white ones to compliment the Magenta. As they have different growth heights, they should be just spectacular planted in a loose group.
