The 'conversion' from ice to basketball or concerts (and then return to ice) must be very expensive. I remember in the late 70s and early 80s Maple Leaf Gardens put-down thick pre-cut plywood on top of the ice surface for concerts. Yes, it was cold if you were sitting there and for concerts that played during the winter months you kept your winter jacket on for the entire show. Barclay's conversion is nonetheless impressive.

What one must recognize is Williamsburg is a part of America…it is not a country unto itself. If a non-Jew or non-Orthodox walks into the area it is their right. Respect is expected but the rudeness shown to outsiders is rampant. No Hasidic has the right to display privileged territory of America as their own. But if we can all respect the wish to preserve their love to honor their lifestyle while they recognize they don’t own the land then we can live together. Respect one another! I really have respect for the Jews and their sense of community and family especially the Orthodox Jews, there's something mystical about them. But sometimes sometimes I wonder what communities should I be supporting and what should I not be supporting. But I will say this the community is peaceful.

This is not a racial thing. This is how they (the insular groups) treat anyone of the outside. they are very uncomfortable having a conversation with anyone they do not know. I once said hello to an ultra orthodox woman on the stairway in B'nei Brak thereby causing a very uncomfortable scene. It is like the rule in Japan, do not talk to anyone on the train. With these guys (and gals) its best to just not talk to them...its considered polite.

This video is such an unfair portrayal of the Hasidic community-using only denizens who have had negative experiences to paint a picture of an already misunderstood community. There are two major points to note-a.) almost 100% of these folks are descendants of Holocaust survivors. No other Jewish community in the world has such a high percentage of survivors. Generational trauma is absolutely at play-for thousands of years they have been kicked around Europe, wiped out, persecuted and exiled.... there’s a reason they are weary of outsiders. It’s getting more open with the younger generations, but I totally understand their closed off nature. B.) there is a major difference in culture. In many ways they are still very Eastern European; a culture which is just not as warm and friendly as the US. What some people may perceive as coldness or rudeness is really just the way that Eastern Europeaners carry themselves in public. I don’t know what was going on with the bus incident, that could have been literally any bus driver in the city for that matter. As for the Haitian woman-if she’s asking men for directions, you can bet they won’t talk to her-there isn’t much mixed gender communication outside of family. We need to take the time to understand each other, not just make assumptions based on a limited perspective.

It's a wonderful thing that we to some level are allowed to live and practice our beliefs freely in North America, which includes Canada. At the same time we need to be reminded that all of us are allowed to live free and not have to conform to others ways.
