Mini Cooper S 15% Pulley Upgrade
Hey everyone, its been a while since another episode! In this episode, join me while I install a 15% reduction pulley! I also install a colder set of spark plugs and a new belt while doing the upgrade. Interestingly or frustratingly it didn't all go to plan, but that makes it all the more interesting!
For reference, I'm working on a Mini Cooper S R53 2004, and parts used:
Cravenspeed 15% Pulley
Gates belt
NGK Iridium Spark Plugs
I hope you enjoy it! I'll be bringing more content too over the coming weeks. Stay safe everyone!

Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
Hey Everybody, welcome to another episode where I restore Mini Cooper S R56 brakes to look exactly like a set of R53 JCW brakes. These are an awesome upgrade from the standard brakes with a much larger piston size and stopping power. Done right they look awesome! Enjoy! For reference I purchased JCW caliber stickers from here if your wondering. They worked an absolute treat: www.ebay.com.au/itm...

Hey Everyone, If your like me and you've been stuck at home during these challenging times, its probably forced you to slow down! You've probably been through all those books, Netflix series you've put off and you've probably Mary Kondo'd yourself and the dog! No doubt, its also provided the time and space to consider the family and friends you love (and miss) and given you the opportunity to l...
Spark plug socket drill a hole through the socket tap it and put a grub screw with a allen head
I did that. Total bitch of a job
This design is NOT what you want unless you drive like a old lady, Over time even with thread locker that bolts work their way loose and causes the collar to widen , wobble, and will not tighten up again. Look for the type that has 2 bolts that hold the collar tight on the shaft, and 3 bolts to hold on the pulley.
Hey oz mini you still got ur mini cooper s ?
UNO you could have just taken the rubber out of your socket and just tightened the plugs same way 😂
When your spark plug socket comes off you just have to put the extension back in and try pulling up at and angle wiggling it.
The cars body is so clean, so lucky to live in a warm climate where there is no salt. I also enjoyed the property and the quietness!
Thanks for your comment, yeah I’m lucky I got a clean car. Not leaving in a salt environment really helps under the car and rust. Cars in Australian weather are pretty good in that regard. I’m really surprised when I see cars in UK where there’s high salt. Yep again lucky to live in a bush block!
Your video production skills are excellent!
]Great mod list. Don't forget the de-carbon the intake valves. Could add 20 HP! I'm going to use Bg valve cleaner from ebay.
I just bought a R53 2006 here in San Diego. I have lots of plans for mods. Watching lots of RUclips videos. Should be fun.
Are there any ECU changes? Are you going to change out the camshaft?
How do you film from your head?
My R53 has 100k miles so I plan to clean the intake valves. Using chemicals instead a walnut blasting . Going to take off the intake manifold. Maybe I should start my own channel. Is it hard?
I just bought a R53. My first project car. I plan to install a 15% too. Your channel is perfect for me.
Love the animals in the background please post a video of them just subscribed !!!!
I did 19% it was amazing
@OzMini Are those special heat resistant stickers? How have they (the stickers) held up over time with heat cycling?
Now after a time do you would say the 17 would be better? Or what would you prefer? Whats the big different between 15 and 17 ? I thinking of make the same move an dont know if 15 or 17...? What would you say...thank you great video
Hi Pekan, I’m really happy with the change the 15 made, it’s a must upgrade. I can guess the 17 would give a little more midrange pull, it’s roughly 2 psi difference so I should notice it if I did it. If taking on a track is your aim I’d say stick with 15, because a 17 will generate more heat. If it’s a road only car maybe go 17. I think at some stage much later I might try a 17 just to see first hand if with an upgraded inter cooler I could get get the most out if a 17
@@ozmini6968 thank for the answer. It should be only a fun 2nd daily. Heat should not be the problem for maybe 4 pulls in raw. And little bit fun on curvy roads. Upgrade cooler maybe go in one when i am at the mechanics. Thnaks for the infos
You can also do a +2% crank pulley. Turns the 15 into a 17 and the 17 into a 19. But as said, more sc spinning generates more heat and wears on the sc gearbox more
Cracking video. Definitely something I'm looking to tackle in the future. Quick question regarding using the puller: would applying some heat to the pulley before fitting and using the puller help with the removal of the pulley, or is it difficult to do that without setting fire to something nearby?
Thanks I’m glad you liked the video. Hear may help the pulley but not the puller. Honestly not sure. For me the chain vice grips was the key, clamped down as hard as I could. Alta sell a different style puller that could offer a better clamping force but didn’t try that.
You could put the new plugs with the existing spark lead just to get them to catch half a thread and then take the bloody rubber out of your tool to make your life easier..been there done that..
Ahh, didn’t think of that! Good idea! 😁
hi my name is Alex I have one Mini Cooper 2002 ,wher you bye this pulley?
Hi Alex, I actually bought this pulley off Amazon direct from the US. You can get similar quality pulley's off eBay as well, even suppliers in Australia (but they were a quite a bit more expensive for me believe it or not.
Pretty nice video very informative
Glad you liked it
Would like to know where did u get the red trim of the bottom grill please reply
Hi, the red trim was on the car when I bought it, I think it was aftermarket. It looks like it was just a think plastic strip stuck on. I've actually replaced the front bar completely with a new one (someone backed into me) so its now gone
@@ozmini6968 thank you so much replying back
Hi! Good job👍 did you made a remap after pulley upgrade? Thanks
No, no need for a remap. I do have a Cam to go in and that will require one though
What brake pads did you go with?
There’s a bit of a story to that! In a coming video…
Hello! Greetings from the US! I was looking at your budget/list of mods and I am curious if you purchased the crankshaft pulley yet. I had a conversation with Way at Way Motor Works and he mentioned that the 2% overdrive pulley is meant for JCW or stock supercharger pulley sizes. The 2% overdrive size should not be used with a supercharger reduction pulley because it will make for an odd belt size which may slip when the engine is under heavy load. If you plan on getting a crankshaft pulley, I wouldn’t use the overdrive option. I picked up the 15% reduction pulley and the standard size crank pulley with harmonic balancer and the belt fit perfectly so far. Hope this helps you!
Hey, sorry for the delay in getting to a reply. Ok that’s different from what i understand as I’ve seen people running what I was thinking. That’s one thing I haven’t bought yet, although I have literally been looking at the WMW one. You’ve now made me stop and checkout whether it is suitable, so thank you I’ll need to sink some more time into research on this one. I was assuming I could use a 17% equivalent belt as a note.
hey, where did you get the rev counter for the middle? or did you build it by yourself? 🤙🏽 great vid!
Hi, no not aftermarket. In Australia the middle rev counter is standard for this model. There is another version that has what's called a Chrono Pack and that has three gauges in the middle instead
Do you have a link to your intercooler? Wanted to know where you got it
I don’t have a link anymore but it’s just an eBay intercooler, which made an immediate improvement. I’ve now installed a “not so hobo” diverted which has made it even more effective which I’ll show in another video coming
@@ozmini6968 diverter? Really have to see a link to that video want to get one too.
Just be aware that if the SC has a lot of milage on it, it can shorten its life. I did mine and 3 months later have to change the SC 😔
Thanks for the feedback, hopefully mine should last a while as the car has a little over 110k. Although I am thinking of doing a service on it
How many miles was on your Sc?
@@JexL92 185k km.
great video, makes me want to install one also
Thanks, it’s a great upgrade, makes a noticeable difference for sure
You know what this is a really good rundown on what to do to improve the front upgrade, I'm just about to do this myself , I have all the parts in original messy condition so onwards now to hopefully get mine to look like yours, all the best from UK
Thanks, it’s all in the prep and cleaning prior to painting, the more time you take there the better the finish, good luck with it
Sounds like patience is something you need in abundance, when working on a mini. I just wanna get in and have fun in mine. So would have to buy the new-ish callipers a week or 2 in advance , the ones on the car when I bought it are neon green and hideous.🤢🤮. Thanks for sharing dude. 👍 liked and subbed. Stay safe and stay awesome 😎
Thanks, I think the more I’m working on the Mini the less intimidating it’s becoming and easier, stay safe too
Good on you Shaun. I’m looking forward to following the journey and seeing what you do to the mini.
Nice work Shaun, looking forward to seeing what’s to come
Thanks!
