I find it very interesting how the decision on where you carry certain objects differs based on experience and mindset. Admittedly I am a Combat Veteran so my minset on where I carry my knife is totally different. I usually carry a CCW, and being right handed I always keep my combat blade (Spyderco Para 2 or 3) on my weak side. My multitool (Leatherman Arc) on my strong side. Why? If I need to open boxes, packages, cut rope etc, I use the blade on my Arc. If I am in a defensive situation, I will g for my gub first (I know seems to many as something of last resort, to be honest I will only use my Handgun if it is Life and Death situation. I have my defensive knife on weak side so I am trained through muscle memory to be able to deploy if I get into a situaatiion where I am grappling with someone or my firearm, which most liklely will be in my right hand, I can use my defensive blade. I use a blade for everyday tasks like box/package openiing most often so that I keep on my strong side for easy access. Same for light. I keep on left side (weak) back pocket as I will always favor the firearm on my strong side and I will most often use my light for mundane task compared to using it as a weapon light, but I want muscle memeory to take over if I do need to use both my firearm and a light (same reason why II don't use a WML) . Even if I dont carry a Firearm I keep everything the same so my muscle memory doesnt change, Sorry for long post but reasoning and mindset are everything I think to how we EDC.

My final goal is to have two setups. EDC and EDC(Restricted). And have 1 item for each category. EDC Restricted is for when I go to church, which is on school grounds and has laws and restrictions of what I can have on my person.

    • @CarriedAwayPodcast

Would you make your final EDC and then the (Restricted) version is just removing a few of the restricted items, or are you making two entirely separate systems?

I like the mental practice of figuring out the one item in each category that you'd keep....my only issue is that I have two different knife carry situations: while at work, my blade length limit is 2.5" but when I'm at home or out and about, I carry about a 3" blade....or whatever I want 😂. So I'd have to have a setup for work and a different one for the weekend 😊

My son used to collect watches, knives, suits, pocket watches, pew pews, pens, guitars, whiskey, wine, cars, bikes etc haha. After he stopped working PSD and didnt care to maintain an image anymore, and a ceiling height of quality could be lowered, he doesnt really care or miss the fancy stuff he says. Hes one of my sons that brought me to usn gathering, blade show, sema, shot show, etc. When he sold his watch collection, both wrist and poc? His fancy pens, his bibles? lighter collection...he cleared a few M. I was shocked at that. His suits from hawks from sev row, hed be gifted watches and etc from employers... Gone is the gt3 rs, now he drives a R32 GTR Skyline. No more g wagon, now he drives a LC79. No more rolex or 1 of 1 custom built watches, just a brownish gshock or a us gov marathon watch. He said his spartan cqb, his benchmade griptilian, and esee 6 will do anything he needs done. No more fancy pew pews with engraving and colors....just a simple PSA Sabre Dagger. And a Micro Dagger for his EDC carry needs. A Marlin in 30-06. an 870 pumper. No more massive house in socal. Just a tinyhouse under a rv port of a shop building, on 100 acres....he has cnc machines, and etc in the shop. He makes and smiths stuff, maintains eq for his local PD. My new carry due to LBD sales, are an alpaka tech case, in purple with orange interior, I did green zippers, and an evangelion unit 1 zipper pull, and godzilla zipper pull. A 500L coast pen light in green, just had a blade done in ube purple, and got custom green handles for that griptilian. Waiting on my multitool I sent off to get purple and greened. alien green and purple splatter space pen, field notes expedition notebook with neon green cover, a limited run for a local group of guys IIRC, my son got me about 4 packs. so rotating notebooks in with the regular orange/black expedition notebooks. And I just got a blacked out milwaukee UTL knife from a distributor. anyhoots, folks shouldnt get to crazy. buy what you need and appreciate everything else. Moderation! I met a guy at blade show whos wife divorced him due to his EDC and patch collecting. he racked up too much debt over edc and gear....

I carry a Leatherman Style PS when I travel. It has scissors, pliers, a screwdriver/file, and tweezers, but no blade (except for the scissors). It is TSA compliant. TSA will sometimes want to look at it, but it always makes it through because the scissors are TSA compliant. I find the scissors serve as a perfectly functional blade when I need one. I've been carrying it for 2 years now and other than an occasional slowdown, it's never held up travel for me. I started clipping it to my keys almost a year ago, and put my keys in my backpack for security, and haven't been stopped for it since.

@@CarriedAwayPodcast The lesson here is, (1) don't take anything you can't afford to lose and (2) have a duplicate in your checked luggage. There is no rule that says the TSA has to follow their own rules. If an agent feels like taking something, they will.

I travel with the Mini Sailor by NexTool. You can remove the knife blade. TSA might inspect it but they won’t confiscate it. I pair that with a Nite Ize DoohicKey Keychain Multi-Tool which has an innocuous box cutter on it. Both reasonably priced.

I'd love something like a Leatherman Micra with a pliers instead of the scissor and a small scissor where the blade is I've ended up swapping to a Skeletool with a sintered replacement for the blade that I can stick a small disposable blade in. 99/100 times I want a blade I only really want a #11 xacto and I want to just have a multi tool stuck in my regular bag. The Gerber Rebar is a great tool, it's just pretty big

The aroundsquare interview was definately the best episode. Incredible. Who would of thought there was so much substance to 'manipulative' fidgets. I really hope you guys try and incorperate that format somehow into tthe future of carried away. You guys go so deep on the theory and philosophy of edc concepts i feel like its really what sets you apart and makes your content unique. That ep was the perfect example. I would love an interview style ep once a month with others in the industry. There are so many big names that i feel you would get so much more out of your brand of discussion than the countless others that chat with them. Just go through all the big idea cards as guests, haha. What's more, no faster way to grow the audience than having on big industry names wih their own followings that watch anything they appear in. This is the formula that comedian podcasters in the US follow and it can blow up their growth really fast getting the right guest on. A happy medium between epic conversations with guests people might not be familiar with like the aroundsquare founder vs types like Ben Banters who gives gold and loves coming on shows for a chat is a winning formula. While the format of eps currently is solid and works really well each week i also feel that leaving space every now and then for a unique idea for an ep segment where you guys do something unusual like build out a edc for each other or to a specific budget could be really cool as a segment rather than just quickly mentioning 'i've been carrying a brass carry' for example,at the start of the show. I think this would help avoid the segment format getting stale. Being a bit of the early days of the show and combind with the current winning format. As a new watch nerd i also want to hear whats on your wrists each ep as part of what you're carrying.. Also i feel that bernard hesitates in sharing certain items based on that it might come across as cheesy or bragadocious or it might just not be well recieved. From my point of view as a fan, if it pops into your head to share and talk about dont hesitate. Its easy just to preface that its cheesy or whatever the thing is while you share or show and tell an item but i just want to see and hear about it all through your point of views. Mikey is fearless with his show and tell even if he sometimes misses the mark, it doesnt matter because what hes saying is still interesting and its something cool to see, paired with interesting and or personal commentary. The perfect or correct answer can sometimes get in the way of simply interesting content. Sorry for all the feedback. i hope i'm not out of place sharing. Just wanted to give my opinions to help my all time fave pcast.

I don’t know about the wet wipes, but it does help to have four or five paper towels folded up in your pocket. Because those you could use if you ever went into the bathroom and there was no toilet paper or you need to blow your nose or if you randomly hook upwith a girl in an alley somewhere and you need to clean up if she doesn’t swallow or you accidentally get it on your pants or something. You know. Just for random situations I find that paper towels come in handy all the time.

I love how someone finds the channel boring but takes the time to comment it is boring - my grandfather would tell me when I was bored “it is your fucking fault you are bored, no one is here to entertain you - if you are bored that’s on you, go get a life, develop some passion and interests and stop waiting for shit to happen” sometimes if I even looked bored he would put me to work with the most mundane tasks and after an hour he would ask if I was bored and I quickly learned that value at any level can only be developed intrinsically
