Scott Brown's Cadenza for Jacques Ibert's Concertino da Camera
When I was younger I composed fearlessly and frequently, yet at a certain age I stopped. Compositional ideas would pop into my mind but could never manifest the way I imagined.
While working on Jacques Ibert's Concertino da Camera, I decided to write my own cadenza, even if it might never be performed. To my surprise, the process was much easier than I expected, and it resulted in something I’m truly proud of.
I hope you enjoy my cadenza!

A Balafon is a West African percussion instrument that resembles a xylophone. In Lauba's composition, the saxophonist is given the task of emulating the sounds of a balafon through the various extended techniques of saxophone such as circular breathing and multiphonics. Could you post the new ETUDES plsss bro I'm so lost in this one
Highest on Bari is a double G, alto I can hit a dub C. The fingerings just dont work and nobody really has anything for that high on bari cuz, well, its bari sax lol.,
Hey Scott, How should I go about adding vibrato to the MS Lyrical and Technical Etudes. I'm currently having a hard time figuring out how I could add it and It would be much appreciated. Also I got 1st chair DHB for Alto and now I'm shooting for All-State so wish me luck.
Hello! First off, congratulations on a successful first round audition! Not the easiest feat to accomplish. As far as adding vibrato goes, I would try incorporating vibrato outside of the etude first. Try sustaining comfortable notes (such as F or F# with octave key) without vibrato. Then trying adding vibrato. Once you can accomplish this reliably outside of the etude, try isolating certain measures where you want to add it and try using it as a 'vibrato case study.' If you read my response to @narenmandali's comment you will find my way of approaching learning vibrato. There are many resources to learning about vibrato online and I would highly recommend checking out as many sources as possible. For the best results on saxophone make sure you are creating vibrato by moving your jaw up and down and NOT by pulsing your air. Hope this helps- if you have further questions feel free to ask them here or email me at prescottbrown@gmail.com Otherwise, best of luck to your next round audition!
Scott is that the right tempo for the 2nd one because it’s really hard and I’m nervous for the 2nd round
Hi- the tempo I performed it at in this recording is actually a touch under the written tempo. I've got two thoughts that will help you in your last bit of preparation: 1. Practice slow with a metronome! The right tempo to practice at is one that you can comfortably and reliably get successful repetitions with. Take the most challenging measures and find a speed where you can achieve technical clarity with a good tone and try to build from a place of comfort. This will serve you better than trying to start at the written tempo repeatedly. 2. Being nervous shows you care! You've put in hours of time to prepare for your audition and you want it to go well. What has helped me with auditions is recognizing that whomever you are auditioning for is actually trying to build a case FOR you- never against. Let the quality traits in your playing shine through and you will do great. I hope this helps. Best of luck on Saturday!
how do you vibrato on the high A so well in the middle school lyrical etude, any tips would be appreciated
Hi! There are several tutorial videos online on how to create vibrato. I would highly recommend checking some of those out to get more in-depth detail. But my personal thoughts are below: To perform vibrato, make sure that it your jaw moving up and down (similar to chewing) to create each vibrato wave. I like to think of the syllable 'yaw' (rhyming with law) to create this motion. Make sure to keep your airstream stable and moving forward as you do this. Aiming to keep each vibrato wave round and not jagged is important for fine tuning vibrato. Dr. Robert Young has a fantastic video that goes in detail about this. Developing consistent vibrato does take time- I would not try to rush learning it for an audition. But if you take a few weeks of deliberate, consistent practice for 10-15 minutes each day you will be well on your way to getting your desired sound! Let me know if you have any other questions!
