2024 Week 45 | Power BI: Country GDP Bump Chart
A bump chart shows changes in rank over time. This week, inspired by a visual from Statista Charts, we are making a bump chart of the countries with the highest GDP in 3 selected years.
The example uses a ribbon chart core visual to create the bump chart.

2024 Week 41 | Power BI: Visualize a Drag Race with Animation
Просмотров 159Месяц назад
There are a few ways to visualize movement in Power BI. This week, we are visualizing race cars moving on a track. The example report below uses Deneb, but you could also complete this challenge by combining a custom visual and the Play Axis visual.

2024 Week 18 | Power BI: Visualize Mammal Lifespan with a Scatterplot and Background Image
Просмотров 1584 месяца назад
Continuing on last week’s infographic theme, we are recreating an infographic from Visual Capitalist this week, this time showing average lifespan for different mammals. We will be using a scatterplot visual of your choice this week. I made two demo versions, one using the Deneb custom visual and one using the Enhanced Scatterplot custom visual. Both of these custom visuals are free to use. The...
2024 Week 29 | Power BI: Remake of a Tableau Segmented Bar Chart
Просмотров 2074 месяца назад
This week, we are recreating a previous Tableau workout in Power BI in which we build a segmented bar chart that contains a bar for the total amount followed by a bar that shows a categorical breakdown of that amount. This challenge involves a bit of data transformation as well as some more advanced data visualization. I used the Deneb custom visual, but you can use whichever visual you would l...
2023 Week 40 | Power BI: Bar chart label bonanza
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Год назад
Last week’s workout caused some healthy discussion about bar chart labeling preferences and best practices. This week we will look at other ways to implement space saving labels while also showing the data labels for the each bar in a bar chart. The report shown below demonstrates 4 ways to implement bar chart labels when horizontal space is limited. Your goal is to implement all four ways and ...
2023 Week 35 | Power BI: Create a Faceted Instance Chart
Просмотров 531Год назад
Sometimes it can be useful to show all data points instead of aggregating them. That is where an instance chart, also called a strip plot or a barcode plot, can be useful. A strip plot is like a single-axis scatter plot. The symbol or shape used in the instance chart can vary, but it’s often a tick mark, which is what makes it look like a barcode and gives it the name barcode plot. We made a vi...
2023 Week 31 | Power BI: Create a Marimekko chart
Просмотров 760Год назад
Inspired by a Tableau Workout Wednesday from last year, we are going to make a Marimekko chart. A Marimekko chart, also known as a Mekko chart or mosaic plot, is used to visualize categorical data across two variables. Both axes use a percentage scale that determines the width or height of a bar. Think of a Marrimeko chart as a combination of a 100% stacked column chart and a 100% stacked bar c...

2023 Week 27 | Power BI: Power Query Simple Pagination and a Treemap
Просмотров 449Год назад
This week we are going to have some fun with Power Query to obtain data from a website that spans multiple pages and then visualize the data in a treemap. Treemaps are meant to display hierarchical data as a set of nested rectangles. They aren’t a great replacement for bar charts when minor differences are important. They are good at showing part-to-whole relationships in a large amount of hier...
2023 Week 24 | Power BI: Visualize Change Between Two Points in Time with Deneb
Просмотров 544Год назад
This week we are continuing our viz efforts inspired by the 1 dataset 100 visualizations project, presented by the Data Viz Project. Last week, Shannon challenged us to create as many visuals as possible using the core visuals available in Power BI. This week’s challenge is to create visuals using the Deneb custom visual. I have chosen 3 visuals that can’t be created using core visuals and woul...
2023 Week 20 | Power BI: Remake of Tableau Length of Baseball Games
Просмотров 378Год назад
For this Workout Wednesday, we are putting a Power BI spin on a Tableau viz created by Luke Stanke and Spencer Bauke for their Workout Wednesday 2023 Week 14. While we could probably match nearly exactly to the original Tableau viz by using Deneb in Power BI, I wanted to see what I could do with just the default visuals. You can choose how you want to do the exercise, but I thought it was a goo...
2023 Week 16 | Power BI: Measure Format Strings and Conditionally Formatted Titles
Просмотров 885Год назад
The April 2023 release of Power BI Desktop gave us dynamic format strings for measures. While the end result could be previously accomplished by using calculation groups, we can now have measures with different formats based upon various conditions - no need to go into Tabular Editor to do this now! While we can use parameters to switch measures, things get more complicated if you need to inclu...
2023 Week 13 | Power BI: Create a connected scatterplot with image markers
Просмотров 869Год назад
This week we are getting a bit artistic and taking inspiration from a visual that was recently published by Robin Rohwer on Twitter. She created a connected scatterplot that uses a flower emoji to represent each point. I thought her visual was wonderful, so I set out to create something like it in Power BI. That is now your challenge for the week. The flexibility of the Deneb custom visual allo...

#WOW2022 Week 22 | Power BI | Can you switch between KPIs?
The requirements said "Color segments by continent"', you had created a conditional column for continets(totally unnecesary btw), but you didn't use it once. When coloring the ribbons, you colored them individually. Wonder what would you have done if the list had all countries in each continent? Sorry, but I did not like this workout.
I'm quite sure you are overcomplicating things. Also, this is not beginner level.
Thanks for the tutorial. It helped create a scatterplot easily after many hours of research. Please can you attach the codes used as well. Thanks in anticipation
Is there any reason, why you assigned the continent to each country individually? Wouldn´t it be easier to just assign it for asia and america and then put in Europe for 'else' (since it has the most countries)?
hey, thanks for the video but I can't seem to use power query editor to split the html code after loading the html code to transform in the pq editor. All transform and add column options seem to be blacked out and not accessible.
I love these! Thank you for the content 😊
Great report view!!
Awesome work! A github link to the PBIX file would be a nice addition to these tutorials.
We post our pbix files in the Fabric Data Stories Galleries. You can find the link on each challenge. This challenge is located at workout-wednesday.com/pbi-2024-w37/. Hello, thank you for the video! How would one change the tooltip in this visual?

dax code was not explained properly
conditional formatting is not working, Can you please suggest some other options
Fantastic!
congratulations on the wonderful work, how can I add more lines of information?
Thank you, great explanation.
This is a Sankey diagram, not a Parallel Sets (or Categories) diagram.
this is crazy good.. how can i follow you? linkedin id?
It's crazy to think that this video only has 368 views after 5 months! This has been SO informative! First video regarding SVG's that actually didn't scare me off with too much code and complexity. Thanks, looking forward to implementing this future client reports for sure!
Nice video regarding risks and the Synoptic panel. Did one myself a while back, it's one of my favorites for sure!
Great! This was exactly what I needed! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the best tutorial. I've tried it step by step. however, I'm facing a problem. I'm encountering an issue with a Mapbox custom style in Power BI, and I'd appreciate any help or insights from the community. When attempting to use a Mapbox custom style URL in my Power BI report, I consistently receive the error message: "Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'composite')." could you please advise me?
Way to Go!
I try to solve on daily basis..

Thanks, this was really helpful!
Is this Task copied from BAS? How to Power BI? ,I didn't see the full video, Did they atleast gave credits to him?
I do see why you ask that, but no it's not copied. We did run one from Bas and gave him credit in a previous week. If you watch this video, you will see there are 4 different techniques here. One does use the "dummy value" technique, but it puts the label on top, and he is not the only one who uses or teaches the technique. You can move the slider to the end of the video to see all 4 techniques shown. One is a table visual, one is Deneb, one is a Microsoft-created custom visual.
Your power BI tutorials are unique compared to the "usual" ones. It gives other perspectives on how you can use Power BI which is very useful and insightful. Keep up the good work!
The information might be excellent however your volume of your voice makes it extremely difficult to follow your video.
I don't understand how ALLEXCEPT works
same concern with profit margin %
I was so lost. And she talks so soft. Maybe it was my speakers.
