AE86 Gets Hasselgren Engineering's Formula Atlantic 4AGE Treatment - Part 1
Thank you to Paul Hasselgren and the team at Hasselgren Engineering for building Anthony his Formula Atlantic street-spec 4AGE 7-rib bigport 16V. Also, shout out to our friends at Trackspec Autosports for helping with the swap, especially Herb Opiniano!

Soon after acquiring this GTS coupe, the stock 4AG 16V 3-rib started showing signs of low compression and early rod knock. Luckily, we had a spare 7-rib already sitting on the engine stand. The goal was to transform this GTS coupe into a reliable car that could do everything - track days a few times a year, tackle local mountain passes on the weekends, but still be a streetable car with creature comforts like A/C, power steering, and blue...

Love those fatlace wheels I want me a set
Um, yeah, you guys can do my 4AGE in my MR2!
Gonna do a custom chassis/suspension for my Z.. Nobody seems to make proper suspension for the Z, which is unfortunate. Nice work on yours 🤙
Installing an aftermarket fuel tank on a 280z
I saw you and your car at the 25hours of thunderhill, very beautiful!
Hi dear , fans seeking for : AE86 Gets Hasselgren Engineering's Formula Atlantic 4AGE Treatment - Part 2 😎
Where's your shop located?
Location?
Gow much does it cost?
Part 2 yet?
No way is that Herb workin on the car?!
Ahhh, the beloved Formula Atlantic. The dream power plant of all AE86 purists. If I had the funds all at once I would've loved to put one in my 1985 GT-S coupe but I built the best still blown 4AGZE I could instead, just to be different & see what kind of numbers it could produce with the kitchen sink thrown at it lol. It's a '89 MR2 big port GZE block stuffed with a BC 1.8L stroker kit, topped with a Manon head filled with a Kelford cams & valvetrain combo that Manon put together for me to take advantage of the gem of my build, had a machine shop use 3d printing to design & then CNC mill a factory style plate to remove the SC12 roots & mount a Whipple W100AX screw blower. JSP fuel rail full of Bosch injectors run by a Haltech Elite 550. It's currently equipped with a TRD header but I have a Martelius Group A XL I'm going to try in the next few weeks. I'm forgetting a bunch but those are the basics of the build. Great vid, love your 86's style. If your ever in Connecticut we should cruise and/or do some street drifting.
You sent your head to Barry ? And he built it for you ????? You sent it all the way to New Zealand ? Let me tell you this much I know everyone thinks mrp builds the best 4age but you couldn’t be further from the truth Lynn Rogers Automotive is the holy grail of 4age tuning in New Zealand and is a formula Atlantic certified engine builder , don’t forget” garage 4age “ as well .
@@jaytagilala755 I'll have to look into Lynn Rodgers. No, I bought the head used from someone who already had it here in the states and even then I think he just paid the extra for MRP to supply the big port core, MRP just sent us all the components to get it ready for boost, cams, springs, valves, retainers ect ect. When my buddy went over to BEAMS 3SGE powered he gave me a good price on alot of the nice parts he had on his 4AGE. I sent it to a machine shop alot of us up here in the northeast use & trust & they port matched the plate we had made to run the Whipple like the factory SC12 blower so it still has a intercooler and an extra blow off valve just in case because we didn't know what kinda boost this twin-screw would make on a 4 cylinder with not alot of torque to begin with but it's been really good to us. Then they assembled it. We actually have more boost than fuel right now so I'm thinking of going to bigger injectors and a bigger pump.
Hi dear Mike, is it possible to watch a test on RUclips, please ?
@@jackcrowbrownsugar Unfortunately on my end that will not be possible. I got an irresistible idea that popped into my head. Im currently building a twin engine car inspired by Suicid3 MX-3 here on RUclips. To get this project started & to be completely honest because of the rapidly raising prices for Corolla GT-S here I sold the vehicle to help fund my new project. I have told a few people about it & Ty on Suicid3 MX-3 has definitely been great inspiration. It's not something alot of people will expect which was kinda the point but we've built two 2AZ-FE's that each should hold about 650-700hp each. BC makes a very nice stroker kit for the engine & increases the displacement to 2.6L. We've been also experimenting with these "air-cooled" turbo's from Comp Turbos. They are not cooled by air, they just have their own mineral lubricant system. This allows a few things that are great. Being that the turbo no longer requires a gravity fed oil return to the oil pan you can orient the turbo in any fashion you like, even vertically. Helps when your trying to put an engine where seating and the rear subframe should be LMAO. Perhaps when it's done ill post alil something.
What’s new with the Z?
im confused, you say formula atlantic "street-spec" without giving further detail, what are the specs of the motor after the rebuild?
Love the video but is cv upgrade worth 1500 price tag? Looks awesome and looks more efficient but I’m not rich and need to be calculated in where I invest my money in my build so looking for the knowledge
I was just going to ask this but they have not replied to you in an over year. Guess we will never know it was noticeable and worth while investment.
Did you really just spend all that time and money, to just re-use an old oil cooler which you claim was used on a motor that was knocking/compression loss?
So many questions. I assume more money than sense with nearly everything. That throttle body isn't going to flow much air. Could easily swap for a larger one and no one would notice. Obviously not going for the sleeper look though as they have the FA rocker cover. Seems a lot of money spent on parts to rev to 11,000 rpm, yet it won't like doing that as the stock throttle body and inlet manifold just won't flow enough air. They can obviously tell people it has Carrillo rods in it though, that will make them feel like it goes fast.
@@georgespiggot8502 hey man, I saw you replied to a comment, but it’s not letting me read it, can you send it again?
I love this action with lift making the job so simple to do with getting all down on the floor and getting back up etc. Amazing what you can accomplish just having a LIFT. Exactly what I need for about six months is PRIVATE garage with nice LIFT and man you can getter done. The one I find online rent is little too expense plus it open to public. Nice work/videos enjoy it very much. How many days did actually take for you to finish the entire job?
Oosoomeee
Fantastic!!! I am afraid to ask how much?
No disrespect but you really slapped on an old ass T-VIS system and used gasket maker on a formula Atlantic engine? Why would you spend all that money and not pay for a $5 gasket and do a 20v itb conversion
But they flowed the injectors and wrapped the exhaust. It will be amazing. And obviously it is a real FA motor not just the rocker cover. Every Formula Atlantic motor has a wet sump, factory pulleys, factory ignition...
Given it doesn't have ITB, the head would have to be flowed differently. There is no way with that inlet and stock ignition it will be running the same cams as a FA motor. Single coil Dizzy at 11,000 rpm, lol. The weight of all the stock accessories, injectors being in factory position, tuning, nothing about this engine is FA apart from someone spent a lot of money for a rocker cover on an engine that has no need for it. I'd say it looks cool but it really doesn't on that engine. It looks like someone watched Initial D. Guessing they had no money left for anything else after buying the rocker cover. Last I saw one at auction it was still going at $3000 PMSL I could have bought it yet instead have ITB, SARD injectors, Haltech ECU giving sequential ignition with Yaris coil packs, Garret Turbo and money left over.
@@georgespiggot8502 umm, formula Atlantic motors are all dry sumped…
6:17 this music is beyond fkn annoying.
Ahhhh yes I remember having to tap the solenoid in my first Corolla too
Shit music.
So you have two hasselgren AE86s?? Whaaaaaa lol.
all that work still tapping the starter to fire it up lol
Easily 10k in parts
Living the goddamn dream, oh my god. Thank you for making this!
LOL not with a diaper on their faces just compli-ANTs that sucks more than that engine.
Tight video
Damn… hoisted on the pinchwelds. F
You go to the frame rails?
That's how you're supposed to lift a unibody car bud.
@@samthesr20man if you have the factory service manual it shows where to jack the car from, pretty sure its not on the pinch welds
@@Mr.4AGE and I'm dead sure you're wrong. It's exactly where the service manual advises to lift them. In a unibody car, it's the strongest point. I'm an A grade automotive technician & electrician of 20 years. You and the original commentor are simply wrong I'm afraid. If it's a body on chassis type of vehicle then you would be correct
@@samthesr20man if you're an "A Grade" (whatever that is), its time for you to hit the books again. The pinch welds are NOT the strongest point on a unibody car, especially a nearly 40 year old one. Go lift a classic car by the pinch welds and see what happens (hint: they'll fold and crush into themselves causing rust.) Anyways. the correct, most safe and proper method for lifting any car is to use the boxed in sections on the frame rails. (where the unibody is built around, the frame of the car) this prevents folding, rocker damage and other related problems associated with lifting on a weak spot "bud" not sure what an electrician's qualifications are in any relation to automotive either?
Why 9.75:1 compression? Will this motor be doing forced induction?
Seemed like a really odd choice. You could do 11:1 and still chew on 91 with the right tuning
🔥🔥🔥🔥
10/10
ae86 goals for sure! i hope ours looks half as good as this one someday
Can’t wait to see the the next episode!!

Why did you guys choose the T3 parts over Apex Engineering?
The main reason: T3 has been making track tested and proven parts for decades. And this car will likely see the track a few times a year. It also is a plus that they are local to me and are owned / operated by some awesome folks.
@@DeLaGarage thank you for the reply. I was just wondering. I have everything T3 makes for underneath my Z. But the stuff Apex is turning out looks amazing! Thought of selling my T3 setup for an Apex track kit
Damn I miss my 280Z 😢

Man I love these early Z cars. I think they will always be timeless. In fact, they still look better than most new cars on the road today.
i agree 100%
I just got my '72 Z back on the road with fuel injection. It looks like crap to me and needs paint, but I get 2-3 compliments everytime I drive it. I guess it just has that look that everyone is missing.

you pinay?
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emission- and smoke crime.
