Foam Flex Hitting Strip Review - Initial Review and Thoughts
We tested the Foam Flex hitting strip upgrade that goes with the Carls HotShot golf sim hitting mat system and loved it! This review covers everything you wanted to know about the Foam Flex hitting strip from Carls Place and answers the question if this is the hitting strip for you. We compare it to the Gel-Touch strip and the Fiberbuilt Grass series hitting strip to help you decide if this hitting strip is right for you.

How does the carls place gel strip compare to the foberbuilt? Thanks
I hit 15 shots off this thing and could tell it was going to destroy my joints. Even the foam mat still can cause joint issues. Sigpro softy all day
Where did you get that ball ramp from?
This one was a gift from a friend who was experimenting with 3-D printing.
What projector you using
Optoma HDR1080p - looks like that exact model is replaced by the GT2100. It's a short throw projector. Can see my entire build here onthegreen.golf/my-golf-simulator/
Thx for the review and the bounce test. Have you tried the SIGPro softy? Am debating Carl's foam vs the softy.
Not yet on the sig pro softy or super softy. Those are on my list next to try out.
@@playsimgolf looking forward to the review.
Do you recommend the Hotshot + Foam Flex over the Fiberbuilt prefer mat?
Jury is still out to be honest. I really really like the foam flex strip, hits great, putts roll pure and no pain or injury. I am not sure how durable and long lasting it will be compared to the fiberbuilt. I also took one star off of the foam flex because it does not take a real tee nor does it have a spot for a semi-permanent tee like the fiberbuilt does which is super nice. If I had to pick just one today to build a brand new golf sim with, I go with the Carls HotShot + Foam Flex strip.
Not sure why it needs to be $280., especially if it doesn’t last. How many swings before it deteriorates? Warranty? That may help justify the price.
Yeah I'm not certain on how many swings before it breaks down honestly. It looks and feels durable but time will tell. I will be updating my review as we use the strip more and more. As far as pricing goes, here is a chart of hitting strip price comparison chart onthegreen.golf/hitting-strips/
After a few weeks, you still recommending the Foam strip over Gel and standard version?
My answer is yes for most all of us the foam flex is the way to go. It is slightly punishing where as the gel strip is fully punishing. If you want to play on the hardest level, go with the gel-touch. We have settled in on the Foam Flex in our simulator. I'm going to use it for the next 6 months and then do a proper durability review and recap then of what I think, but so far I really like it.

Hey Dan. Thanks for your willingness to help. I bought this screen from a guy locally who bought it from Carl’s. It had a small defect in it so they sent him another and told him to keep this one:
thanks for review!
How many lumens is your projector?
What launch monitor do you use? I have and love the Fiberbuilt Grass model. However, I recently purchased a Skytrak+ and I get a lot of shots that do not register. Support says it is likely the mat causing the issue Thinking of returning or finding an insert that is semi-comparable that will work with it.
I'm using a GC2. I am surprised it would be the mat causing issues. Especially one as quality as fiberbuilt.
It’s the Skytrak bud I sent mine back currently rocking the eye mini and love it registers everything great on the short stuff vs I was have so many non reads on 10yards and under on the stplus
would you suggest getting pads/curtains beside the screen or do you think that it's ok without them?
Yeah for sure - especially off to the right in my sim. We are all right handers and shanks off to the right are a real thing. If I had drywall to protect off to the right I would need a better protection solution than what you see in my setup here with just some moving blankets on the wall. I do not believe we have had any balls fire off to the left wall however so if that happened to be the only side that needed protecting for us, it would be no big deal if we didn't put anything in there and most likely never get hit. Depends on the skill levels of the golfers as well lol.
Does yours have the performance turf for the stance areas like they do now? Tee line turf without a foam backing. Have you noticed any feet indenting in the stance areas? Tia
I do not believe I have the performance turf for the stance area. I'm almost certain it is the same stuff you get from turf factory direct called the "Nylon 36 with padding". onthegreen.golf/turf-nylon-36-with-padding-installed-for-onthegreen-simulator/ With that said on my mat there are no feet indenting areas at all. The stance area has held up great.
What sim program is that?
GSPro
What computer are you using here?
Hi! Love your set up. I'm installing the Carl's Premium screen this afternoon for my garage sim. Did you happen to use any blankets or mattress/mattress toppers behind your screen? Or can I get away with just leaving a little over a foot or so so it doesn't hit the wall? Thanks for any advice!
I did not use any blankets or mattress toppers behind the screen. You just need about a foot of space behind it so it can absorb the impact. I did place some blankets at the bottom behind my screen to catch any wormburners that happened to get underneath - but that hasn't been an issue since I raised my ramp up a little bit to cover the bottom of the screen.
What about if you want to have like a 3/4m for a putt?
What is your screen size again?
16' wide, 9' high
I'm just curious about your projector. Are you still on the original bulb?
Yes, still on the original bulb. Optoma 1080hdr short throw.
Can you turn the screen around and play on the back side giving you 3 more years hitting in a different area?
There is a difference between the front side and the back side. I suppose you could do that but the image would allegedly be much worse. There is a difference in sides of the screen for sure. I think a better option would be go get a 4'-5' wide strip of impact screen material and hang it directly over the main impact zone. I'm researching some of those unique solutions now.
Is this the grass series or player preferred series?
This is the grass series.
I’ve got 3 weeks in with my premium screen. Love it, although I feel like it could be tighter even though I have no wrinkles. noticed you didn’t use the bungee cords
I try and use minimal bungee cords across the bottom and sides. Just enough to keep the screen tight enough to look good but loose enough to absorb shots and kill most of the bounce back.
How far are you hitting from and how is your bounce back? My bounce back is still kinda forceful with the driver from 9 feet away. I have half the bungies removed as they recommended.
I'm almost exactly 10 feet from my impact screen. Bounce back is very minimal. Almost all of my shots hit the screen and fall down and roll back towards the hitting zone. Hardly no bounce backs at all. How wide is your screen? Maybe remove some of the bungees on the bottom and let the screen hang a little more freely.
Thanks for the update!

Means what?
I noticed the netting on the ceiling. Have you found helpful?
Yes, for sure. However the really hard hit sky'd balls still hit the ceiling with a decent amount of force. For my setup it is not a huge deal since I have my sim in an out-building with a metal roof and spray insulation on the ceiling and not in a drywalled environment. The netting does kill most of the shots before they hit the net. I could probably add a small amount of foam between the net and ceiling to protect the ceiling more if needed.
16:9 ....you mention....is that the actual measurements of that screen? Or are you referring to the aspect ratio? If the later, what are the true dimensions of your screen....it looks good!
Yes, the screen itself is 16x9. My room is 17.5' wide and the screen takes up nearly all of it. Attached by bungees to eyelets drilled into the walls along the side. We hung a pipe across the top and then bungeed the screen to the pipe for the top. And thank you!
I'm looking to buy the same screen with same 16x9 size to put in my metal building which has a 12' ceiling. I notice you don't have an enclosure or netting above your screen. How far from the screen is your hitting area? Also, it looks like your projector is above the top of the screen? From the calculation I've seen online, my short throw projector will have to be mounted only 7'6" off the ground to fill the 16x9 screen in 16:9 resolution. Any info or advice based on your setup is appreciated. Thanks.
...and I have the optima 1080 short throw projector also
Screen is 10 feet from hitting area. And we do have netting across the ceiling and on top of the screen. We've had plenty of balls hit into the netting as well so you certainly need something up there if you are anywhere near 10' away from your screen. I use the same projector as you and it is hung just above my hitting zone maybe a 9.5' from the screen. It hangs at 10' high. so 9.5' away and 10' up is where the projector hangs. Fills the screen perfectly.
Thanks for this
Very helpful. Thanks man.
Nice review. I've had mine for about 18 months and don't love it. I agree with you on the injury aspect of it as it is pretty darn forgiving on the joints. But I hate how the mat pushes back on your club when you sole it. It influences the lie and face angle way too much. My son, who is a competitive junior and high school golfer, won't even bother using the strip because it's so unlike a real fairway or tee box. But as you said, it's nice for preventing injury. I just ordered the holy grail which hopefully combines the two theories.
I'd love to get your feedback on the holy grail once you get some time with it.
What’s the holy grail ?
Since you 3D printed the ramp, I am thinking you could also 3D print the tee but using TPU so that it's flexible. Might be worth a try anyways.
Awesome! Is it 1080p or 4K? Curious what GPU you’re running! Thanks :)
1080p is the projector and I'm using a geforce rtx 2070 video card. Hope that helps sorry for late reply!
Can you share the 3D prints for the ramp or is your friend selling them at all? These would be super useful...
Looks great. Where did you buy the carpet?
Who do you get the tee from?
Fiberbuilt adjustable golf tee
Great! What are your screen dimensions?
16'x9 - glad you like it!
Is the green strip heavy enough to sit on its own without moving? Or does it lock in?
It is pretty heavy, however it does lock in place with the base. I doubt it would stay completely still if it was not locked in.
@@playsimgolf Do you still find it to be easy on the body?
@@canefan17 Yes, and I'm playing as much sim golf now as I did when I first got it (if not more). No wrist, elbow or joint pain to speak of.
Perfect set up! Thanks for sharing
Nice review. I’m wondering how people use tee claw to keep them from flying away. Also where did you get that light and base on the mat? Thanks
Thanks Bagger. The light was just a LED light from Amazon. The base on the mat... it's a fiberbuilt mat so it is the normal base. If you mean the ramp then that was a 3d printed ramp a friend of mine did for me as a gift.
Tie the BirTee to a sinker with fishing line and you won't have to chase after it
@@skinnerreels this is a great idea!
where do I get the STL for that ramp? also are there any STL's for ball trays?
I'm not sure, I will ask my friend who printed the ramp. Good question on the ball tray STL... will investigate.
@@playsimgolf any update on the ramp 3D print file? This would be greatly appreciated! I just ordered my fiberbuilt.
@@playsimgolf Any update!? Would love to print one of these!
