Whenever I hear this song, I can't help but hear Martin Gores' version

Amazing voice!

"Carol of the Bells" was composed in 1914 by the Ukrainian composer, Mykola Leontovych. In 1921, he and his wife and children were visiting his parents for the Feast of the Epiphany when two strangers knocked on the door, asking for overnight shelter from the bad weather. Mykola's father welcomed them. A conversation later that evening turned contentious. The two strangers were pro-soviet, Mykola Leontovych favored independence for Ukraine, and blamed the Soviet regime for suffering that Ukrainians were experiencing. After everyone went to bed, one of the strangers - who was in fact a Soviet agent who was looking for "dissidents", shot Mykola, robbed the family, and fled with his accomplice. Mykola Leontovych, composer of "Carol of the Bells", died in his father's arms as his little daughter looked on. I add this information, not to detract from this video performance, but to show that the song has much deeper roots than it would suggest.

Still listen to your Motherless Child. I cry and yet, I am comforted. I am transported back to Louisiana where I grew up. My mother chose to give my upbringing to our maid. Alice was my Mother. She rocked and sang to us, loved us as our mother would not. It is so poignant to me now. Knowing the sacrfices she made because she loved us as her own. As a grown woman of course I see life then more clearly. I only wish that I could see her again. She would surely know all my heart knows now. 😢

I used to sing this to my grandson to put him to sleep as I did with all my kids. First heard it while a cast member in a school play in 1971. I was in the 5th grade. It was a Harriet Tubman play. Anyway, that song just clung to me through the years. Three times on repeat and my grandson is knocked out. 😂 So glad I found your version of it. I hadn’t known about the other verse so that makes it extra sweet. This has all the jazz and heart I love. Blessings.
