    When I lived in SA in the 1980,s the 25nc,s were my favourite engines. No more. The NG 15 was and still is a fantastic little engine. Can’t wait to see one running again in Wales.

    I was lucky to be able to travel with the reef steamers on Jenine the 15F but unfortunately I was only 2 at the time so I can't remember much. It really is a tragedy that the reef steamers are no more

    Fantastic. Not usually impressed by small engines, but am by these. Was lucky enough to see them working in the early 1980,s and will never forget the sight and sound.

      It’s the MX tender and usually came only with the final iteration Class 19s. It seems like they paired one with this engine indicating that the Class 19 that they swiped it from is either non-operational or scrapped. You’ll see that the other Class 25NC that’s it’s pulling has its original tender

    Hard grease We used to dip it in MH oil so it was easier to grease Such memories Also used hard grease to wash our overalls They came out spotless Good video Thanks

    Beautifull whats the track gauge ? Why is there barb wire between 2 units near the end at 20:20 ?

      Gauge is 3 feet 6 inches. The barb wire is to deter vagrants from wandering between the staged locos and help themselves to brass and copper. This is South Africa, the land where you take what you want without asking, because the law "protects you". If we want to preserve stuff, we must fight fort it.😔

    Congratulations on a beautiful restoration job. In the mid / late 1980s I had my last trip on an RSA steam excursion from Germiston yard pulled by the Melanie. It was also her last trip and sadly she broke down. We suffered the ignominy of being towed back to Johannesburg by a diesel loco.

    GREETINGS Don't that locomotive have an ashpan Is that why the fire gets taken out of the firebox door If not I presume it does not have sprinklers either

      Hi. The locomotive does have an ashpan ,but its very shallow. The fire does get "rocked" out into the ashpan by the shaker bars, but because there's not enough space for a drop grate to open into the ashpan, the clinker gets taken out through the fire doors. There is sprinklers in the ashpan yes.

    Nice! I went to PE on a ship in 1988 to load fruit, whilst there I was able to see some steam shunting in the docks and managed a visit to the loco shed. All gone now I am sure. 😢

      South Africa - Cape Province at the time the film was shot, now Eastern Cape Province. 3 ft 6 in gauge 2-8-4 (Berkshire) loco (SAR/SAS Class 24). Interestingly, one of these locos was later imported into Queensland, Australia, to work on the scenic Cairns to Kuranda line, which in common with the QLD "standard" gauge is 3 ft 6 in.
