This is way too sexualized.. and it seems like the Russian is plowing thru his spoken lines and sung lines are very clipped so far. Much prefer the original London staging. Or even the concert version with Josh Groban. More classy in my opinion. And this thing with the actors playing the instruments should have ended with Sweeney when they did it. Nothing but a gimmick that takes the audience out of the show.

I saw this production in New York almost 40 years ago. Judy Kuhn and David Carroll were so good, as was Marcia Mitzman. The show was a mess, but i still loved it. Let's see what they do with it when they bring it back this (next?) year. Maybe they fixed the book finally. (i've seen four different books, all of them problematic, i'm not sure they can fix it without massively changing the story)

Thanks to whoever recorded this back in 2005. David Hype Pierce is one of my faves. Yeah it's illegal, but I was a child back then and lived in a different country, there was no way I was going to be able to see it on Broadway. I wish they could have least made a professional recording to be released once the Broadway run ended. I would pay money for it! This shaky, low res version is the closest I'll ever get to seeing DHP as Sir Robin for real.

I produced the visuals for this production back in 1992, along with my team of Brian Jefcoat, Rene St. Aranaud , and Jerome MacDonald. It was a labour of love in support Equity Fights Aids. This video doesn't do the live experience justice to director Keith Batten's production; last minute volunteer professional cameramen to tape it, donated editing services to bring it together, and a fantastic cast drawn from Toronto casts of Les Mis, Phantom, and others as I remember to perform it. I also remember a friend attending the afternoon dress rehearsal shushing a woman talking through the Russian Anthem performance of Colm Wilkinson. Turns out she was translating for a group of Russian tourists who were moved to tears by the recent fall to the Berlin Wall. I love the power of theatre....

The dub is way off on most of the songs. Not the lyrics at all.

I’ve seen This legendary Musical Chess in London 6 times… it’s truly stunning in every aspect. The opening scene with the Chess pieces ballet dance with the Hindustan style , was beyond stunning. So captivating and beautiful it keeps you breathless and stunned. The musical score is highly worked,,, so classy and beautiful. Well done for the two men of ABBA for the musical score.

Some thoughts: 1. I am seriously in love with this version of the musical, particularly Philip Casnoff's interpretation of Freddie as a conceited, arrogant, hot head, with a chip on his shoulder and New York attitude but with a vulnerable, hurt, obseessive nature that drives him. His portrayal hints at genius but some potential instability and mental illness. I love this version so much that as I write my Chess fanfic, Knight and Pawn, this is the one that I think of. 2. 4:20-I always find it interesting that Freddie points at Anatoly as the "nice guy" and himself as "the bum". I have only seen one version that does the reverse and its clear he's being sarcastic (He's even using air quotes). I find it interesting because during this time of Cold War propaganda when the US portrayed itself as the good guys and the Soviets as the "Evil Empire" (think Rocky IV), Freddie just insulted himself. There are a few possibilities about why he does this. The whole "nice guys finish last" thing saying that Anatoly is a nice guy so of course he will lose. He knows what the press really thinks about him and is playing the role that they assigned him. Another possibility is that he doesn't always like the tantrum throwing monster image that he created and is acknowledging that Anatoly is a better man than him. He created that image and character and now he has to live with him every day. 3. 6:20-What is it about the reporter's question that sets him off so much? The most common interpretation is that he's gay or bisexual and the reporter assumes Florence is his beard (After all if he says that they are not a couple the next question will inevitably be "why aren't you?"). While I put that he's bi but currently not interested in anyone in my fic, I think it's deeper than that. I think to Freddie it's not an attack on his sexuality but his ability to play chess. They think he's washed up, his better days are behind him, and are just waiting him from him to crack up. The implication in his mind might be more like, "He is such a lousy chess player now that he can't pick a decent second unless he was sleeping with her." 4. So many interpretations. Does Anatoly love Florence or what she represents, a way out? Are Freddie and Florence an actual couple or are they more like a brother and sister now? These are three very damaged individuals so do they have a chance of being in a solid relationship with anyone or are they better off alone? 5. In "One Night in Bangkok," does he really hate the night life that much if so why is he even there in the first place? To play the whole "I'm unavailable" card knowing that's a draw? Is it the opposite, is he into it and knows that it's an addiction but can't stop himself? Does it play somehow into his youth where he sees shallowness, vanity, abuse, and self-destruction, and tries to resist it but ultimately gives in? Is he losing himself into self-destruction and has lost the ability to care? 5. In "No Contest" is Walter really encouraging Freddie or as I think just letting him hang himself? After all, if Freddie wins it's a victory for America. If he loses, Walter can always blame it on Freddie's attitudes and vices and drop him once he's no longer useful. Freddie's so cocky and sure of himself that he doesn't realize that he's being played. 6. On a lighter note, 1:26:01. In Watsonian terms, it seems that a certain brash arrogant chess player from New York temporarily channeled the spirit of a brash arrogant drill master from Georgia who greatly resembled him there. In Doyalist terms, it seems that they weren't going to get out of here without at least one North and South shout out.😅😂 7.."Pity the Child" is one of my absolute favorite Broadway songs and I love the contrast between this version and Murray Head's version. Murray Head's version is detached, colder, more analytical acknowledging for the first time that this still bothers him and wondering why. This version, is angrier, rage filled, more emotional and more draining as if he knows that this still bothers him, that he's fought against it his whole life and is so tired of fighting. It's also worth noting that the way this scene is staged that it seems less like an interview and more like a therapy session. Freddie is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and won't admit it. 8. 2:20:58-There is something so downright adorable about the hug that Freddie gives Anatoly. It suggests appreciation, understanding, and maybe hints at potential friendship between the two.

I LOVED this tour, its up there as being one of my favourite version cuz of the setting, staging and costumes. The principle cast was excellent, its definitely a production where having actor/musicians really worked in its favour. such a shame it didn't tour for longer in more venues and go into the West end. I understood it went over to Canada after the UK tour ended. i think it was well received over there too. Still have a fondness for the first tour and then the version in the mid 90s with jacqui Sciot as Florence where ended on Nobodys side, that was fab! But this comes a close 2nd in my eyes as a reimagined concept. Bravo and thanks for sharing. never thought i'd see this version again. :-) X

I think the actress who played Svetlana in this did a much better Russian accent than Barbara Dickson. Don't get me wrong, Barbara Dickson has an AMAZING voice and I am a huge fan of hers. But when she sang the song with Elaine Paige in the original production in the 80s, despite her trying to do a Russian accent, her Scottish accent was too strong. She still sang it beautifully but this woman's Russian accent is better ♟🤩

I saw this tour and it was truly excellent, particularly Shona White, though I also had a soft spot for James Graeme's very hammy Walter (was surprised to learn he'd been the Phantom!) Much better than the later revival - aka "The Michael Ball Show" (though that did have Cassidy Janson)

Judy Kuhn is phenomenal here. I wish I’d seen the New York version (which I know was overall a bomb) just to see what she was like. She’s so different from Elaine Paige.

Thank you for giving us a chance to compare the West End and Broadway production. As much as I agree the original show was superior to the Broadway show I’m actually in the minority in preferring the singing on Broadway. Judy Kuhn is my favorite in the role because she’s not the Paige mode, like everyone else who followed those two. In terms of presence and timbre, Kuhn is really singular and most moving because of that.

I've seen another video of this production where the last quarter or so was audio sans visual. It's so great to see the entire show again. I saw this on Broadway and loved it. The ending was a downer but thematic as the one main character was indeed a sacrificed pawn. Thank you.
