Enjoyable podcast about my favourite SH short story. Agreed with what you say about Dr Watson. He was an army Dr who saw atrocities beyond civilian imaginings and probably participated in some himself, defo PTSD and adjusting to civy street. I have a theory about the photo too,as if it was the pair standing side by side ie standard photo poses,Irene could have been sitting on his knee dressed in her 'walking clothes'. The Brett adaptation of Scandal at least honoured IA as the woman of talent and intelligence that she was written as , which is an opera singer, retired Prima Donna and independant woman of means which in that era made her an outsider. I do think there's a combination of Byronic and intellectual attraction. The keeping of the photograph and his remarking on her beauty which is not typical of SH does indicate more than intellectual respect. I could say more as this was fab. Surprised you haven't more views and comments.

The whole nakedness thing is described a bit, but not very well. 1st of all there are not "naked" by 21st century standards. He describes Ransom stripping down to his undershirt and underpants and he describes this as a state of nakedness. The standards of the day would have seen such a state of undress to be scandalous enough to be naked. There may be other passages with more explicit nudity, but I don't recall them in Out of the Silent Planet. As for the purpose it is because of the immense heat of the spacecraft, which is a problem in spacecraft that is caused by a lack of surface area to radiate the excess heat from. Funny thing is a spherical ship would be the worst shape for dissipating heat, though this is likely unintentional XD

There is a 50 minute animated adaptation of this novel from 1983. The Mormon backstory is included in the middle of the feature, but it's done in a more efficient manner. Also, Holmes and Watson already know each other in this version. Edit: The Mormon aspect is actually taken out.

For Baskerville adaptations, I highly recommend the 2002 version. It might not be the most accurate and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Richard Roxburgh as Holmes (the bad guy in Moulin Rouge) but Richard E Grant as Stapleton is sublime casting and the cast as a whole is stacked. It leaves some stuff out but I certainly feel like it's got more verve than the Jeremy Brett episode 😢

Personally, Knightley and Emma ick me out more than Marianne and Brandon because Knightley has known her all through childhood, whereas Marianne is already at the stage of looking for a husband before she meets Brandon. Also, not suggesting it for the podcast but just wanted to let you know that there is a queer sequel to Emma out there. It's called "Emma in Love" and it's by Emma Tennant. I haven't actually read it; I used to own a copy but never got around to it 😂 So, I can't recommend it but thought one or more of you might be interested

I think the Bloody Sunday referenced in the book was probably the one from 1887 done by the real Charles Warren, which was about clearing the homeless from Trafalgar Square and affected the public opinion of the Ripper murders

My favourite character is Susan (sadly Gaspod fills the same narrative role, so we get less of her than I'd like) but Mort is my least favourite book. Also I got so much more from the first 4-5 books after finishing the series once, but reread the books 6 to 30 far more often than any others.

I have a very unpopular opinion about this book. I enjoyed the ending, I think it was very well written, however this book did not deliver to me. Shouldn't be a Song of Achilles be told from Achilles perspective? I mean, I did not receive any of the inner turmoil the character of Achilles and he did have some. He refused to go and see Briseis because he felt guilty of killing her family and felt bad - were? Don't tell me, show me! What was it like for him to kill? How does he feel truly inside? How does he truly feel having a child? Does he truly not care or he left him because he knew he would die? Nothing was given. Patroclus was not a good narrator. Also the treatment of women in this book I couldn't. Sure is Greek mythology, but no. This was insane. All women were either abandoned or left for abuse. Also thank you saying Achilles mother was raped, you are the ONLY reviewers that say she was actually raped. What I also hated was that other people hate or blame Achilles son for being homophobic or whatever. Did no one think about his trauma? He is literally abandoned by his father even before being born. His father, threats his mother like trash, leaves him unborn, never asks about him and such. Why is his trauma just looked over? I think, the author focused so much on the love between Achilles and Patroclus, that any other plot line was left behind.
