Darth Vader definitely has a very sad backstory, with Anakin losing his mom, then his wife and, lastly, his master/friend/brother. Although this is what put him on the wrong side, the dark side, his hatred and power-hungry behaviour are pure evil. I personally understand how betrayed he can feel, even if I luckily haven't been in such situation, but everywhere he goes it end up in a slaughter of innocent people. He's a broken villain for sure, but the darkside filled him with emotions that weren't his own.
