Why is it that when I put major label pop music (like Dua Lipa - Levitating) through this . . . using MP3s downloaded from Amazon music as master references . . . it is majorly violating Spotify's loudness recommendation? Dua Lipa - Levitating comes in at -5.9 average LUFS and +0.9DB true peak max . . . so it's clear that massively successful tracks are ignoring these guidelines completely and cheating in the "loudness wars."
the short answer... some people just don't care, and loudness levels probably is not as important as it's often made out to be
my idea about this concept is that a great song with production that 'breaks the rules' will always outperform a bad song with production that 'follows the rules'
Thanks for the info and tips. Great video. Must say I'm a bit disappointed in that RODE Clip-on
haha i am so glad it was helpful for you! the mic is better than it seems... some user error, ironically, the levels were not set very well lol (while i'm trying to teach loudness haha)
Hi Dawson! So, the example track you've shared seems to go between 12-15 LUFS integrated. However, when you showed the graph to left showing the LUFS level that the majority of your song sits at. Is this normal? Is the goal still to just reach -14 LUFS when trying to upload to RUclips or Spotify? Also, you shared that I may have to clip the peaks of certain elements of the song to make sure that the true peaks do not go over -1 dB. If it causes distortion, what are some ways I can do so without causing distortion?
To answer your first question, if your goal is -14 LUFS, ideally you want as much of your audio to hit that level, but there will most likely be short moments where it goes above or below. That's okay. Generally, a range of plus or minus 2 LUFS is fine. But keep in mind that if more of your audio is reaching above that -14 LUFS level, it will have to be lowered by Spotify or RUclips or whatever platform you're uploading to. That can change the character of your audio that you took time to craft. All in all, try to keep it within plus or minus 2 LUFS of your -14 LUFS goal, and aim for MOST of the audio to be reaching your -14 LUFS goal. To answer the distortion when clipping, you will find that if you limit or clip audio a lot at once, let's say you limit audio by 8 dBs, you're more likely to distort the sound. If you limit a little bit, i.e., one or two dBs, then compress a little bit, limit a bit more and so on, you'll find that each limiter or compressor is not having to work so hard, they're all 'teaming up' to bring the audio down to a desired dB level, resulting in less distortion. Of course, the quality of your limiter and compressor will come into play, and they all will alter the character of your audio in more or less subtle ways, depending on their quality.
Go bless you homie! SOLI DEO GLORIA (To The Glory Of God Alone) Father, Son & Holy Spirit -Ronnie
you rock 🤓
i got 3.0 lufs with 16.3 db peak max, i think im cooked 😭
hahaha you gotta slap on a hard limiter
I was actually looking for something where you dont have to listen through the whole track to determine the LUFS integrated. Im using the internal multimeter in Final cut pro, but I cannot see that this is better in terms of not having to spend so much time getting the levels right. Sometimes I spend more time on adjusting sound levels (master) than the whole edit. It seems like our technology should have come far enough for us not to sit and jerk around with this. I find these measurments to be highly inacurate. Sometimes I upload my track to youtube just to check that I come in right. If I see between -0-1 and -1.0 I just use it. If not I try again and upload again. If RUclips can determine this after a quick analysis, so should we be able to without having to adjust the sound when you reach 17 min of an 18 min track, just to have to do it over again. Are you supposed to listen to your entire track 5-10 times just to get the right level? Once I made a video with Da Vinci and they had a way better solution for this, so it does exist.
that sounds like so much work. i found the same issue, where i wouldn't really know the true levels until i played through the whole song, and it takes a lot of time collectively. i would cheat sometimes and just play the loudest part of the track to check levels. i do know the pro version of this plugin would give you the ability to drag and deop your audio and get data from that. obviously double check though before spending money! the youlean website is really good and informative.
i will mention that there is increasingly more softwares which will export at a specified loudness level. FL studio for sure has this, you can master your tracks in FL studio and set the loudness. Even Adobe Media Encoder can export at a specified loudness. If you're really concerned about the peaking, you could rely on those tools. If you're more concerned about the feel of the master, yes doing it by hand or by yourself is probably best. Although, I feel that stressing so much about a tiny loudness difference is a bit counterproductive... depends on what you're working on obviously... but i try personally not to worry too much about the small details
@@dawsonkamenz Indeed. Good point! Thanks for that.
If you know 1000licks you can already improvising ?? And you should learn tha licks under every type of chord right ?
ahaha improv is a whole other thing... improving more so comes from knowing chords and scales, not so much learning licks i think. ya, generally i try to translate into other chords or at least recognize the pattern
@@dawsonkamenz I know all chords and all scales for example, but when you're improvising you don't have time to think, you need to play quickly some phrase in some key, and I think for this I just need to remember many licks from many keys and practice them a lot to play them quickly, without thinking , or am I wrong ?
Hi

This sounds familiar. Where might have I heard this before?

hey thank you 🤓 have a great day
@@dawsonkamenz you too
The coolest thing that i can say is that I relate to Dilla's silly story of his parents leaving the stereo on in order for him to sleep. When I was a baby, my parents would do the same thing because i'd be scared to sleep if I didn't have constant music playing during the night. Thats where my love for music came from ❤🎉
wow that's amazing! ya i remember always wanting the radio or a cd playing as a kid when i would sleep, and then even as a teenager i would always play jazz while i slept lol 😂 as a kid it helps you feel safe though
thanks for the comment 🤓
@@dawsonkamenz Jajajaja, we all relate in the oddest ways! I sometimes still play music when im sleeping, and i sometimes actually do fall asleep LOL!

Subbed, great tutorial. I'll be looking at your other videos now too!
hey man thank you!
Excellent presentation, Dawson. 🙌 I love this meter and used the free version for a while. But I think it is so useful, I paid for the pro version -- support great ideas!
wow thank you! yes i can understand getting the upgrade... one of those plugins that's really worth it.
This one reminds me of Black Maria's song in one piece
hahhaa nice
So, your favorite character from One piece is Black Maria?! 😮😮😮 you mean that you like the deadliest pirate from One Piece?!
As a Dilla Fan since like the late 90s this was probably one of the best mini documentaries I’ve seen to date. Thank you Brother. Salute.
wow 🤯. that means a lot coming from a legit fan haha 💖💖 love it! have a great day!
@@dawsonkamenz Anytime. You too! Keep up the quality content.
The reason why there are no comments on this video is because there is nothing to add. Its already a perfect tutorial.🎹🎹🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Sounds great 👍🏻 🎹
thank yooou!
I don't think people doing loose drums is necessarily copying Dilla, I started out with quontised beats because of the software drum machine emulation kept everything on grid. Whe I first started making Hiphop in 2006 (Ironically the same year Dilla died) I thought beats was supposed to be quontised and was going through My beats midi making every line up to the grid however it sounded worse, same for melody. Thats why over time I stopped keeping drums and other elements on grid, I was not copying Dilla however His sound obviously influenced My perception of what Hiphop should sound like to sound good.
Its not copying imo either because Its like at the end of the day someone has ALWAYS done at least one thing before you did it doesn’t mean you weren’t creative just because just means they beat you to the idea thats all, sometimes when i sample music or if im tapping out some drums on whatever im using to produce when they’re quantized sometimes they become very stiff or repetitive or they’re too perfect if that makes sense Dilla taught me that human feel and crazy swing cant always come from a machine
@@Eazy_mani It's definitely a sometimes thing because some programmed on grid quontised beats can sound good and can sound bad depending on what else is going on but I do think that played in drums just sounds more real.
@@HOLLASOUNDS yeaa thats what i meant by too perfect as in like it doesn’t have that real sound to it
@@Eazy_mani Also depends on the genra and sub genre for example Lo Fi Hiphop sounds good off grid, vs Trap that sounds better on grid. Drum n Bass, Trance, Dub Step all all on grid.
you bring up a good point. i guess it would be inaccurate to say dilla was the one who started doing loose drums. messing with time has been individually discovered by many other musicians, elvin jones comes to mind. and probably a lot of producers shift timing of elements in their beats to match the specific style they're aiming for.
Nice work, I really like the mood of this piece!
wow thank you! it's no song of determination though 😎 just finished listening to that, i especially like the story of it which you wrote in the description. thanks again have a good one 💪🏻
@@dawsonkamenz Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! Keep up the good work!

Really sad man. Sorry he didnt get to live a long life.
his life ended short but his legacy continues onward. really an impactful human!
Well put together. Thanks.
hey. thank you so much, i'm glad you enjoyed 😊
I am an audio enthusiast and this aspect of using the TDR plugins, referring specifically to using compressors with Equalizer APO are what I find most challenging. So, thank you very much for taking the time to do these videos. I am learning a lot from you.
i really appreciate the comment. so glad the vids are helpful to you'
Thank you for doing this video. It was another very informative video and I am learning a lot from you. In addition to watching the video you did on the fundamentals of TDR Nova, which I thought was great, I then subscribed to your channel only to realize that a lot of your other videos were more involved than I wanted to go. I do not operate a DAW and I don't create or produce music. I am simple an audiophile who wants my audio system to sound the best it can. The same is true for my video. I am currently using the app, Equalizer APO, on a windows PC that I am using a media server. In addition, I have TDR Nova and all of there other free plugins. I am trying to learn how to use the TDR plugins to get the desired output.
thank you! well i'm glad these vids were helpful to you, even if the rest of my channel is more producer/musician based
It was entertaining, and I learned new stuff, thank you!
