I never got to play on a field that nice as a kid. I'm happy for the kids who can. Bless you and all the grounds keepers.
Wow! Nothing better than seeing a ball field take shape. I threw up when shea and yankee got knocked down! Too heart breaking!😮
art.

Coach could you tell me what you need to maintain this? How often do you fertilize?
Amend the soil with what?? Compost?
I used a sandy loam mix from my local yard
how did u spread the wet seed?!?
Mix it with pellets. I do this later in the video
Thanks, brother. I was curious if this would fit the Makita split boom. You answered my question.
Glad I could help
Job well done. Very impressive keep up the great work Definitely not an easy job and a job that a lot of ppl don't understand how much work it does take behind the scenes. Can't wait for more videos.
Thanks 👍
Quick question: I have seed that is ready to spread (pre germinated) the sprouts have started and I should lay it today however we have a cold almost freezing 24 hours where I am and it’ll shoot back up to mid 60’s tomorrow… can I mix the seed with milorganite 24 hrs in advance (today) and spread it tomorrow? Or should I continue the water process and hope it isn’t too sprouted by tomorrow.
Sorry for the late reply. I'd continued that water process the extra day
Whats your infield mix made up of?
64% sand, 16% Silt, 20% Clay
@@CoachTooz what source do you have for that? Is it something regular people can pickup? Would love to have a source for a mix like that.
I sent it in to soil lab called Turf Diagnostics, located in NY.
Great Job! I work for a Minor League Baseball team as the Assistant and am looking to reacquaint myself with getting the grass looking great and getting the Field back in excellent condition. As the previous assistant kind of gave up on the basics. So, your videos are helping a lot. Keep it up!
Thank you for the kind words!
Great work man! I've been there before with a very similar situation. Had a giant river running from 3rd base side all the way through softball field between home and pitchers plate all the way out to first base. It was a lot of pulling stuff away and trying to get the sun to dry out as much as quickly as possible. Adding mix in. Level. Compact. Nail drag. Nail drag and a lot more nail dragging and leveling but in the end it was playable. Good stuff
Thank you!
Nice work! I need you to fly up to Oregon City this Thursday night so you can get my skin ready for the weekend.
Haha, good luck on your season, Coach! My flower bulbs are starting to pop!
Great work. I think I would have had a stroke if I realized I had only 24 hours to fix this problem. Lol.
Thank you! Was definitely stressful!
Dumb question here. Living in Ohio, when would you recommend beginning this process that you've done to your field? I'm assuming late September.
I don't know your weather, however when your temps have cooled down from the summer and well before any sort of frost/freezing.
Looks fantastic! Keep up the good work,
Thank you!
Nice
Thanks
Excellent work! Going back and doing the clean-up lines really make a difference. The whole infield pops. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Good looking field. How did it do with this California rain we're having?
Thank you! The rain helps! The rain is the grasses best friend! :)
Your field looks amazing! It's got to be the best High School field in America.
Thank you!
Height of cut?
3/4"
Awesome work Coach. Where did you pick up your seed at? I used Par 4 on Grossmont HS and Fletcher Hills L.L.
I buy it from Stover Seed. Mountain View Seed is the brand of seed.
Awesome work coach, great year of overseeding!
Thank you!
Dude this came out amazing!
Thank you!
Great video! Very informative!! ⚾️🏟️ Do you follow the same process in the outfield? Thank you 🙏🏼
Hi, thanks for the kind words. I don't follow the same process with the outfield, because of time purposes. I do a pretty generic overseed with a lot of shortcuts.
Welcome 🎉
Help, coach softball and I have a 2 spots of grass dying back and balding where the grass comes up to the dirt. Reseeded and the field looks amazing but those spots. Looks like a middle age man out there thinning. Is it a disease or something?
Hi, sorry for the really slow reply. Most likely its compaction or soil issues in that spot. I get the same thing. I'll try to find those spots, beat them up/till them up, throw some seed and top and sometimes they fill in.
@@CoachTooz It is definitely something different like a disease. It is not a very active area, one is right behind second. Thank you sir.
That's really a awesome mower.
Thank you so much!
Great Video! I know you didn't like the topsoil mix, but how much top soil did you have delivered for the infield?
I believe it was 4 tons, if I remember correctly. 55 bags of those bags, so need to do math conversion
name? model? brand of edger?
I believe its a McLane. Generic edger, not at school to check, but nothing fancy.
Coach.....great content! Where did you order the sod from? Local?
Sorry for the slow reply. I got the SOD from my buddy who was doing his job and just had some left over scraps
Not only does it cut the stolons and rhizomes but it does remove SOME thatch, reducing the chance of scalping due to the mower “floating” on the sod.
Absolutely!
Jesus Christ! That thing should have a seat !
Haha, I know!
im jealous this is such pain to work on great job.
Thank you!
What kind of mower is that with the dethatcher attachment?
Allett C34. Sorry for such a slow reply.
Man great work! I live here in the area (Woodland Hills) and help take care of our fields and was wondering if we could chat sometime and get some of your advice on what we can do to improve things. Great work man. Huge fan of your videos.
Sorry for the really slow reply. Please hit me up anytime. Coachmatuszak@gmail.com
Labor of love
Thank you!
how much sand is required for a project like this? I have a high school field in central Indiana that needs some love!
4-5 tons
@@CoachTooz thank you!
I pre-germinated some Kentucky blue grass this year as well. Aside from being an absolute pain in the ass to dry out and spread, I was impressed with the germination. I planted it alongside some turf-type tall fescue and perennial rye and shockingly it all came up in about 7 days. I share your consensus that it didn't really feel worth it in the end based on how tough it was to spread. Used carbon Pro g ( compost/biochar product) as a carrier and it was very tough to get it to spread evenly. After laying it down, I ended up doing another pass with some regular dry seed instead to make sure my coverage was even. Looking to next year, I have a mix of Rye grass and KBG in the back yard and I am really considering just considering overseeding with Rye. Love the KBG 's ability to spread especially living in MN but the long germination time is a killer and being able to do a quick spot overseed with a dog, rye grass just beats it. Might try some Barenberg HGT bluegrass or Regenerating Perennial ryegrass to get some aggressive spreading, with better germination times
Thanks for the feedback on that. I pre-germinated on my infield and DIDN'T pregerminate on my outfield, and they pretty much seemed to come up at the same time. I really noticed very little difference side by side.
NOTHING more satisfying than watching a baseball field get proper TLC. Good work sir!
Thank you!
My Fav Part- doing all the work then going to teach class. Non teacher baseball coaches will never understand, lol. Us teacher coaches can do more field work before 8am then anyone else around. Love it. Keep up the work.
Thank my man! Hope you're well!
Awesome content. Just seeded my back yard with CGI BERMUDA GRASS SEED AND THEIR KBG. HOPE TO GET A LAWN LIKE THIS IN MY BACK YARD
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, what type of perennial rye grass did you sue? It looks amazing.
Mountain View Seeds
The yard videos are the most interesting for me. I like how you bring some sports field expertise to your lawns at home.
Thank you. I'll definitely mix them in as I get projects. Thanks for the feedback
It's great to see a new video. Thanks for the update.
Appreciate it. Let me know if there is anything specific you want to see
@@CoachTooz anything, such as reel sharpening, herbicide, preemergent, leveling, plugs, irrigation.
@@andrelecomteI don't sharpen my own reels, but let me know if you have any questions on backlapping. I'll be using some preemergent after my overseed in the near future
Don't dethatch warm season grass. Verticutting is good...aeration is good. But don't dethatch.
I don't really care about my warm season grass. It never really is in play.
Why not? I have zoysia and was thinking about dethatching
@@vroor32 A dethatcher rips the grass structure up and out of the lawn along with any thatch. A verticutter simply cuts the stolons (and rhizomes if you go deep enough) thereby encouraging new growth. Dethatching is fine for fescue or rye though.
have you ever heard of rhizome split aeration, also called other names depending what state you're coming from? They look like thin ninja stars instead of plug aeration. You cut the runners in two directions and they sprout out faster than over seeding "Bermuda Grass"
Are you basically referring to verticutting?
@@CoachTooz no not as aggressive, and less stress to the turf. But yes that works well too, in the off-season
This was a fantastic video but without a quality mic it was hard to understand and where music was added, Well, I had to give up on you demonstration. That was a disappointment because it could have been a classic tutorial.
Sorry about that. I'll work on getting a better mic!
Looks good, but you should’ve gone with Fescue. JK😂. We can’t wait to get going at GV. Thanks for all your great info, coach!
Ha! :)
