Domenico Scarlatti - Sonata in G minor (Recently Discovered)

This Sonata first appeared in a Henle edition in 1985, and so it has no K. or L. catalogue number. I heard it on a Yevgeny Sudbin record, and after a good deal of difficulty finding the score, made this transcription (transposed to D minor).

great interpretation
This is beautiful. New mic position by the bridge?
Stereo pair for the guitar! Bridge and neck😊
Absolutely exquisite! It is 4 am in Seattle, and I am so glad I found this!
Thanks so much!
Bravo! Délicat et inspiré! 👌👏👏👏
Beautiful as always
It's always so great to listen to you play. I totally miss hanging out and see you around campus.
Captivating and absolutely beautiful
Bravo Gabriel! 👏🏼👏🏼
Excellent
👏
This is lovely. Where’s “Boots of Spanish Leather”??
Man, you transcribed this piece perfectly! I’m honestly so impressed.
Your interpretation is really great here wonderful playing. Is this your transcript?
Thanks! Yes, but really it's just a transposition of the cello original, i think i may have changed one note
Love the hair!
Nicely done Gabriel! 👌👏👏
Hot damn gabe-o!
Wonderful view there, also!
Nice :) Excellent, thank you.
Really sweet!
Master guitarist
gorgeous phrasing at 2:00 :D
Thanks for that, I love that bit!
Amazing
Excellent!
Wow. Nice :)
Great playing, awesome sound Gabriel!
Thanks a lot, Juan!
Wonderful playing as always Gabe!
Amazing
Dreamy <3
Bravo, best performance that I've seen. The finger replacement you do at 0:10 for E & C# is perfect and helpful. Will never be able to play as well as you do with damping the bass notes, but I'll be happy to just play the entire piece without making any mistakes. Cheers!
Thanks Jimmy!
Gabriel for prez
Fantastic! Bravo 👌👏👏👏
My god.... it's absolutely gorgeous. Your voice is gold. Also who knew one could play this song on a guitar so beautifully...
I got blue balled so hard 😂 We need the whole song! Im not asking 😡
Muito interessante sua abordagem desta música. Parabéns pela execução.
it is always a pleasure to hear you perform!
Finally, someone who plays the bass notes like they're written (there's a video of Julian Bream here on RUclips playing this piece at a party and even he doesn't play the bass notes correctly!). Regrettably, however, the piece is still not being performed as written. In bar 23 of the original score the E pedal note is raised a half step to an F. You can't play this on the guitar, but accomplished players will play the F an octave higher. That F note adds so much drama and suspense to the piece; I'm sure Bach would turn in his grave today if he heard any of these guitarists--actually, nearly all guitarists--just stubbornly repeat the E pedal note. Of course, this is due to the many incorrect guitar transcriptions of the piece that ignore the raised bass note in bar 23. But if you look at the original score that Bach wrote for the 'Lautenwerk,' you'll see the raised note in every edition. Bach had a very good reason to raise that note, which any trained musician can hear and appreciate. It's sad that so many guitarists--even those who play the bass notes correctly--don't observe it. Just listen to any pianist perform this piece. None of them, I repeat, no pianist, would ever just repeat the pedal note in bar 23! Just watch a few videos of pianists performing this piece and you'll immediately hear the difference.
I would disagree that the reason many guitarists play an E pedal there instead of an F is “due to the many incorrect guitar transcriptions”. It’s because of a technical problem. I would recommend that you in future give accomplished musicians the benefit of the doubt on matters like this, and not assume that the mistake is because they have not bothered to actually study the music, or because of some other form of negligence. The choice to play an E there rather than an F is a difficult choice every guitarist faces in this piece, and this particular performer, like many others, has decided that it is the lesser of evils. The alternative of playing the F an octave higher would maintain the original harmony of the piece, but it would be the only section in the piece where the bass suddenly jumps up like that, meaning that the bass as an independent line would be damaged. Other solutions include: playing the low F with the nose or chin; transposing the piece into an entirely different key; or having a friend nearby to fret the low F for us when it comes to that part. Indeed, all of these solutions have been used by many guitarists, while many others find these solutions to be inelegant. I’m also not sure your comment about Bach turning in his grave was warranted, though I appreciate your passion for this music!
@@JaxonBurn I appreciate your taking the time to comment. Let me explain a little: I too had played this piece for years--I'm sure you'd agree that it's a really fun piece to play!--in accordance with a transcription that simply repeated the E pedal tone. Then a few years ago I began learning to play the piano and BWV 999 came up. At first, when I saw the Eb in the bass of bar 23, I was convinced that it was a print error, but I investigated and found that it was actually my guitar transcription that was not correct! I now routinely play an F an octave higher in bar 23 (it easily fits perfectly in your fingers--no need to jump or stretch) and it sounds much more correct. Perhaps guitarists who don't also play this prelude on the piano find the pedal E bass note sounds better, but if you play the piano you'll feel that this one note is the most important, most dramatic note in the entire piece. Just listen to how the momentum and the forward drive pick up in bar 23 when a good pianist performs the piece (or better yet, if you play piano yourself, just play the D pedal note all the way through; you'll see that the piece is lacking something). Then look for the few guitarists here on RUclips who play that F an octave higher rather than stubbornly repeating the E pedal tone. It works! Of course, every guitarist is free to play the piece however he wants. I prefer, however, to play it like Bach notated it. To me it just sounds boring when you repeat the open E string; it takes all the drive out. I would therefore at least urge you to try it; believe me, it sounds better (at least to a pianist's ear). Please give it a sincere try. Thank you, and thanks again for taking the time to comment; I appreciate it.
Thank you for this❤
thank you for making an already holy song even holier by letting pass through you in this way
this was posted 3 years ago so it's unlikely that you'll revisit this, but I'd be so happy if you did. this is one of my favourite covers i've ever heard.of anything. your playing and your voice are immensely beautiful and you absolutely do Joanna justice, and that is an incredible feat in itself
Thank you so much for that - i'm actually working on the full version. It's very difficult, bit i'll try to make a video in the next couple of weeks!
@@gabrielbalogh3910 could you also make a tutorial or something of the sort? just some headers for an intermediate guitarist trying to learn this? I've got the start down but the second section is a little more difficult to figure out for me.

Dude, I’m in my car crying right now
Специально продуманная аппликатура левой руки сделала возможной отличную артикуляцию. Большая редкость у гитаристов!
This is so good dude. Does anyone have a tab of that strumming pattern?
Thanks so much! I haven't written up the tab but it's really simple. It's just triplets - thumb, index, middle - with the two fingers on the top two strings and the thumb alternating like this: string 5, 3, 4, 3, 5, 3, etc. Hope that helps!
Great transcription! really fits the guitar well. Also fantastic performance!
Nice work, I wish you sucess ! 🎉
Do you have an Spotify account with your interpretations? It would be great to have it on my playlist !
Thanks very much! No spotify i'm afraid - maybe I'll look into getting some things on there soon. Thanks for listening.
