Selective Start Method Explained : How To Paint A Portrait Using This Method
I don't understand the problem: everybody's skin is a muted orange colour. Some people are lighter, some are darker; some people are redder (add some red), and others are a more golden brown (add some yellow). For greener parts, you add some green. My go-to beginning for a skin colour (a muted orange) is burnt sienna and white.
I love your explanation! I have recently adopted the Apelles palette and orange is my go to base color for most skin. Thank you 🙏🏻
A great video: simple and straightforward. (The double portrait, by the way, is by Frans Hals, not Rembrandt.)
Oops. Thank you so much for letting me know 😊
music is too loud I cant really hear you comfortably : (
Thank you for letting me know. Going forward I have fixed this issue.
Gamblin could have created a black by mixing ultramarine blue and burnt umber instead of going nuclear with phthalo emerald.
Yes I get it. But that is why it is called Chromatic Black. 👩🏼🎨
Excellent. Thank you.
You are welcome!😀
Would love to watch but can't take the music
Thanks for letting me know.
Are you using ivory black paint in the portrait? if not Witch color do you use ?
Yes Ivory Black here. Thanks for watching 😀
Shelly, I run procreate on my iPad for my reference photos. Do you have any experience with this app or how to get it set correctly to employ this method?
Hi. I have used Procreate but not a lot. The thing that I find helpful is sizing the head exactly the same as you plan to paint it. This allows for one to one measurements. 👩🏼🎨
Quin Magenta (PR122) + Green Gold (PY129) work too, you can add some Phthalo Green to make it darker. Also, Pyrrole Orange (PO73) + Dioxazine Purple (PV23) which create even darker mastone.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the tips 😀
Is fat over lean does apply also with Acrylic paints?? (Water instead oil, obviously)
I’m not an acrylic painter so not sure. I would guess that its more important with acrylic to think about thin layers below thicker layers.
Thanks!
Wonderful! Thank you for the inspiration.
You are so welcome! 😀🙏🏻
It is amazing, beautiful portrait. I've enjoyed your monologue.
Thank you so much! 😊🎨

Super, just wish you had clicked on the lightest lights to see what they were.
Thanks for the advice. I can’t remember why I didn’t 🤔. I will just have to make another video about whites 👩🏼🎨🙏🏻
Magnifique Merci beaucoup Shelly Merci pour vos explications Merci pour tout.
You are very welcome 🙏🏻🌼👩🏼🎨
Thank you, this was very helpful.
I’m so glad it was helpful. Happy painting 🎨👩🏼🎨
Why do you use Richard Schmid as an intentional misleading drawcard - is it because you know he is immensely popular and you are .........well let's say taking his credit is easier than earning it
No this is not at all why… my first mentor Tina Garrett taught me to paint in this manner which she learned directly from RS. I use his name so that he gets credit for this method of painting. It’s no different than saying you’re painting in the style of Rembrandt or Sargent. Also I want people to know they can learn more about this method through RS’s books.
The term "mark making" reduces the whole profession of painting, one that has developed and improved over the past 20,000 years to a kind of post-skill hipster term that demeans this entire tradition. To me the term "mark making" is another post-skill art theory that demeans artists and places us in kindergarten again, where anyone can do "mark making" without any training or natural ability.
Mark- making is simply lines, dots, marks, patterns, and textures we create in an artwork. Painting can be more textural and the marks a painter creates, can add interest to a painting. Many old masters used items other than just paint brushes and the marks that they made created masterpieces. 🌼
I wish you would have used both colors in the "Artist" line and NOT one from the "1980" line and the other from "artist". Everyone knows the 1980 line is way cheaper and less pigmented.
Yes that would have been better.
Pieknie
🙏🏻🌼👩🏼🎨
I like terra Rosa for skin tones too, venetian red is good too.
Yes I like them both too. Thanks for sharing 😀
i buy my wallnut oil for painting from the supermarket hehe
This is from M. Graham…Don't buy walnut oil from a grocery store because it is refined differently and will not dry correctly…but I also read its ok if the grocery store brand doesn’t have any additives. Happy painting 👩🏼🎨
@@ShellyJCoxArtist thank, was thinking about the exact thing; i assumed food grade oil is more pure than technical oil, this was my assumption; no additives are written on the label 100% wallnut oil. i have tried it and seems to be drying ok. a bit more slow than linseed; and smells great:)
and also the paint film when dried looks more glossy and compact than linseed oil
@@Robocop-qe7le yes I very much prefer Walnut oil over linseed!
I like Shelly’s videos, but must point out that Shelly is misleading when she says that she “ warmed up “ the neutral colour with the alazarin “. As any text book will tell you a glaze on top of a colour will primarily CHANGE the colour ( not just the value which I assume she means by “ warming it up “ ).
Hi. I’m referring to the temperature of the color not the value. Adding a transparent glaze of red over an area in the painting will make it warmer. But remember, color temperature is dependent on the surrounding colors.
Is that ten hun
Yes. You are correct ✅
I have only painted like this with good results.
That’s great to know. Thanks for sharing 😀
@@ShellyJCoxArtist good to know that we are not the only people doing this. As your video pointed out.
@@parthsavyasachi9348 yes! So true. I believe we are in very good company 👩🏼🎨
The music is not needed in an instructional video. It competes with what you are trying to get across.
Noted. Thanks for the input.
This is mind blowing, I had no idea these kinds of photoshoot events were a thing, please tell me how you find out about them! ❤
Hi reetse. Mostly I find them by word of mouth. The 2 I have attended are American Frontier Productions in KS and in SD Jim Hatzel has Fiddlers Green Studios. Both are amazing!
Your measurements are not right. The left cheak doesnt seem right and the forehead is much larger . The problem starts from the eyes. You should lower the right eye of the girl. Otherwise your sketch is good.
Thanks for sharing
I just got one thank you :)
Excellent! It’s such a useful tool. 👩🏼🎨
Thank you I love your content very grateful :)
You are so welcome. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻👩🏼🎨💖
Can you explain the second one?
Not sure what you mean by the second one? 😊
Ok sorry I see now.. the 2nd one is talking about adding more of a stronger or more saturated color along the line where 2 planes … the lighter plane and the shadow plane join together. The line of color sorta connects the two. Hope this explains it better. Thanks for watching 👩🏼🎨🙏🏻
So good, Shelly! Looks hard to do.....painting the self via a mirror.
Enjoyed this self portrait. I can do one I see it in my future
So nice It is you. I see you here
Thank you. 😊
Yes you can! Go for it 👩🏼🎨
It is a challenge but it can be done. Just take your time 🙂
WELL DONE - RENOIR WOULD SMILE - *BRAVO!!!!!!!*
That’s so kind! Thank you 🙏🏻
@@ShellyJCoxArtist YOU ARE VERY WELCOME, YOU DO PAINT WELL, LORD BLESS!!!!!!!
Your content is so helpful, thank you! As a newcomer to oil painting, I wonder if you always varnish your paintings as the final step? Thank you! ❤
I do a final varnish with Gamvar after about a two month drying period. If the painting has to go sooner, I coat it with ReTouch Varnish. If the painting is a commission, and the client is living close by, you may offer to give it a final varnish after 6 months to a year if more thickly painted. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
these are also great tips for commissioners. Often they will send artists pictures that have sentimental value but with no sense of design won't really look better as a painting.
So true! Thanks for sharing 😀
😍
🤗🤗🤗
Shelley: this is a very promising painting. I can't wait to see the final product. Great start
Hi Mario! Thank you 🙏🏻.
this is an invaluable video, thank you so much for making it :)
I greatly appreciate you letting me know. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👩🏼🎨
@@ShellyJCoxArtist 🥰😇
Wonderful!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I HAVE USED THIS METHOD FOR MORE THAN 14 YEARS PAINTING OUR FALLEN HEROES OF TEXAS. I FIRST STARTED USING IT BECAUSE I NEEDED TO MAKE SURE AND CAPTURE THE SUBJECTS IDENITY IN THE FIRST EYE AWAY FROM THE LIGHT AND KEEP IT FROM START TO FINISH. MOST OF THE FAMILIES LOOK AT THE EYES OF THEIR LOVED ONE FIRST SO THAT MUST BE RIGHT "NOT JUST AN EYE, BUT HIS EYES" AND THEN MAINTAIN THAT THROUGHOUT THE PORTRAIT. YOU CAN SEE MY WORK AT "KEN PRIDGEON ARTIST ON RUclips...
I love your art btw and Clementine looks like it will be outstanding when you complete♥️
Thank you so much! She’s finished. You can see her at westernsinwood.com Thanks for watching 🙏🏻👩🏼🎨
@@ShellyJCoxArtist she is Beautiful!! I love what you did with the background!!

Wow! What a super flattering comparison. Thank you 🙏🏻👩🏼🎨
Maybe the greens more yellow….
I like this idea! Thank you 🎨
Dear Shelly, thank you so very much for sharing this! This again is very helpful, greetings from Germany!
Hi Saskia. So glad it was helpful! It’s always great to see up close. Appreciate you letting me know 🙏🏻🎨👩🏼🎨
Very nice portrait 🎨🖌️
Thank you so much 😀
I suggest to just study the Rococo portraits, if you use a projector to transfer a photograph to the canvas it will look wooden no matter what you do - you have to sculpt the person with your brush strokes as you observe them and find the nuances that create the perfect composite of reality - a photograph gives one harsh slice and if you just paint by numbers filling in the light and shadow you will only be average unless you drop the training wheels of the projector and sit with the client - I hope this helps
Awesome advice. I’ve never used a projector. I do you photography but often work from life… when possible. It’s hard to get commissioned subjects to find the time to sit. Maybe if they better understood the process. 🎨
Shelly has never used a projector, she does not need or ever used "training wheels"
Very informative. Thank you! Btw I watched part 3 first. Loved the finish portrait and most importantly your clients loved it too.😍
Awesome! Thank you! 😀🎨
