    Hi there, I found your review because I too ordered this magnificent 1860 light cavalry saber from Windlass Steelworks, but I just ordered it last friday and they offer a sharpening service (in Germany) and I am desperately trrying to figure out what instructions to give to them for sharpening a saber like this. I don't even know if they are going to listen to me, one would hope that they do, I am paying the bill afterall, but still. I heard you say in the video that the top of the point was not sharpened at all. My immediate question then is: "does that part normally need to be sharpened and for how much (inches or centimeters) would that be then ? And what is the idea behind that ? I'm kind of new to U.S. sabers and I read that some cavalry sabers are only sharp (more or less) from the first half of the blade upwards, but they musn't be sharpened all the way to the tip. Do you have any knowledge of this and can you give me some advice what you would think is best in this case ? Obviously we are not going to be on horseback any time soon so what applied to cavalry back (just blunt forcing their opponents with the steel) then does not apply to us backyard cutters with a keen eye to any Russians stepping over the borders ;-D Is it a good idea to say a sharp edge capable of slicing paper starting from 1/4th or 1/3rd of the blade counted from the the hilt upwards and ending 1.5 inch from the tip ? Or is that unpractically sharp and will just give a bend edge ? Any input greatly appreciated if you can. Cheers from Holland.

    • @tsmspace
      @tsmspace 4 месяца назад

      I would sharpen the entire blade. If possible, have them grind the full bevel down to make a single bevel edge. Often sharpening services will just grind a secondary bevel, because it is much easier. If you are worried about it, maybe you should just sharpen it yourself! It takes a while but is very rewarding. Buy a brand new round course file, and file the full bevel to an edge.

      @@tsmspace I have given my instructionsnow to them and they said they will put a note about it on the saber that goes to a German smith who does the job for them and basically there is no guarantee at all that it will be as specified, as I also mentioned the parrying bit and the point not being sharpened and such, but we'll see. I have seen your video where you spoke of those DIY sharpening tools, but I am short on time and at the end of the day would prefer to just correct maybe what was not done enough than to do it all myself from scratch. Yes, it could be rewarding indeed, but I have sharpened an axe before and the agrrevation about the time and effort it took far outweighed the feeling of achievement for me. I thank you for helping me out with your opinion and suggestions. I asked around, no one else said something on the matter, only you. I appreciate that. Hope you had a fine Independence day, with fireworks. As a Dutchman I go ape for fireworks, but that's at the end of the year then. You should google "how to survive Dutch firework" for a laugh perhaps. ;-) Take care.

    Would riveting the chainmail then weld the chain mail work well?

    • @AlFonso-p6p
      @AlFonso-p6p 2 месяца назад

      Jb weld doesn't work unless you properly clean and score the surfaces that you want to join together. Modern made Maile is typically soaked or treated with oil to keep it from rusting. It would have to be thoroughly cleaned and degreased and properly dried before applying it. Jb weld won't adhere very well to smooth surfaces so it's necessary to score the area so that the mixture has something to grip together.

    Could the issue be with gimbal locking?

    • @tsmspace
      @tsmspace 10 месяцев назад

      yes it was. I fixed it.... actually it wasn't gimbal-locking, it was that I was reading the position in euler angles ,, and it was randomly going to anywhere that could equal that angle ,, which often fell outside of the 180 degrees of the sliders, and whenever that happened it would just max the sliders. ,,, To fix it, I actually just put an if statement that IF it's over 180 then it subracts 360 from it, or if it's under -180 then it adds 360 ,, so that it's always a number between -180 and 180.

    What game engine are you using? Are you using quaternions for your rotations?

      @@tsmspace You haven't had any gimbal locking issues?

    • @tsmspace
      @tsmspace 10 месяцев назад

      for most rotation I'm using addforce to a rigidbody, but for the cameras it gets wonky sometimes. And for the replay camera it stores quaternions and then sets position from the stored quaternions, so easy

    • @tsmspace

      I don't keep up with their background. honestly those things are heavy. They sent me a second one, which was identical. They did it quickly, so in that respect they were good, but ,,, the sword just felt really like it was soft as soon as I touched it, then it WAS soft as soon as I did anything with it, and the second one was the same. I have them in a closet. Honestly they would be ok but they charged in the hundreds and for that you can do so much better. I think you will end up happier with a cobra steel in the long run.
