I know this vid is in good fun and I'm not trying to dogpile, just a wanted to share some thoughts: magic is a giant part of dnd and if a player can use it they will because magic is, well, magic. And they SHOULD see it as a challenge. Why would a DM cut like, half the player's abilities out if it WASN'T a challenge? Dunno what you got going on in your story, but as a veteran player... lean in to what your players want. If they wanna use magic, play in to that. Maybe make the consequences less harsh for them, but still make it more of a double edged sword. Either way, your game's probably fine you seem like a nice guy. You don't have to always go along with whatever players want, but yeah asking players not to use magic is like asking a child to not take a cookie from the cookie jar.

You said that magic is illegal because of wild magic surges? Awesome. Just keep making it inconvenient for them whenever they use magic. Every time they cast a spell have them roll a d100. If it lands on a certain number or a group of numbers, they're now effected by their own spell. Never tell them what the numbers are. Change them around as much as you want. They want chaos? Give them chaos. Most importantly, don't bother plotting anything with these kinds of players. Just have like five or six mini quests planned and roll with the punches
