power supplies' to either side is so that you can have the shortest power cables to your PDUs on either side of your cab. Of course, we used to have both PDUs on the side of our hosts power supplies and now with PDUs on either side, you need wider cabinets so you can get the hot air out of the cab and have room to patch...

@@Ronnocbot gotcha, were they physical DC's or running a hypervisor? Seems like a bit overkill for physical. I have a few 14G's and one 15G in my homelab. Trying to get in with a recycler or something to hopefully get more 15G's as I know tons of nice equipment gets thrown away every year.
@@cjchico Yes, they were physical in an enterprise environment. All our domain controllers are physical machines because of better reliability and physical security. Domain controllers are one of the most important and vulnerable servers on a network, so we want to be able to physically isolate them from the network if need be in the event of a ransomware attack. We have about 8000 employees at our organization, but the redundancy has saved us a time or two. Pretty much two DC’s in every data center, or one at a remote site. It was actually cheaper to get these crazy high end Dell R660’s w 512 GB of ram then to spec it down, so extreme overkill just to save a pretty penny. Yes look at government surplus agencies. It’s so crazy because we cycle our hardware every 4 years. Most of my servers in my homelab came from my work as they used to sell servers to employees for $100 flat. Crazy deal Sounds like you have a decent little home lab!

Dell's too embarrassed to just state that kinda info. And if you use an NVMe drive not listed on Dell's super secret HCL ... they'll FORCE the fans up to 10k rpm. Enjoy. And ... the administrator no longer has SU rights to manage their own fans. (new "feature" in their latest iDRAC BIOS)
