Bloody Couloir Climb And Ski: First Of The 50
Bloody Couloir is listed as one of the 50 classic ski descents of North America. Located near Mammoth Lakes, California, it is easy to see why the Eastern Sierra is famous for its backcountry lines. With firm conditions, this was definitely a tough ski for me but still ranked as one of my favorite days of the season!

Quandary Peak Solo Climb and Ski
Просмотров 1402 месяца назад
Quandary Peak in Colorado is an excellent choice if you are just getting into ski mountaineering. The avalanche danger is almost always minimal (if you descend via the Northeast Bowls) due to the slope angle always staying around 30 degrees. The ascent is about 3.2 miles with approximately 3500 feet of vertical up to 14,265'. My ski descent was on March 10, 2024.
W Trek: Torres Del Paine of Chilean Patagonia
Просмотров 6146 месяцев назад
The W Trek is probably the most famous hike in Patagonia and for good reason. It covers some beautiful terrain in Torres Del Paine National Park. The trail covers 46 miles with around 10000 feet of elevation gain. While we opted to do this in 2 nights, most take 3-5 nights to take more time and enjoy the sights. We had to do it this way because of our schedule and because most of the campsites ...
Mount Abbott: Glacier National Park of British Columbia

Mount Abbott was possibly my favorite hike of my recent trip to the Canadian Rockies and Montana. Glacier National Park of BC seems to be much less known than the one in Montana, but both are spectacular. The whole drive along Rogers Pass is truly incredible and I would highly recommend adding this to the list if you are taking a trip to the Canadian Rockies!
Mount Willis: Hidden Gem of the Canadian Rockies

Mount Willis is the tallest point in the White Goat Wilderness of the Canadian Rockies. This wilderness area is located just outside Banff National Park. With no marked trails and steep scrambling, this multi-day trip definitely came with challenges but was well worth it! Lots of wildfire smoke during this portion of our trip, but the White Goat Wilderness is still one of my new favorite places...

The hike to Laguna Duff is just one of the many hikes in Cerro Castillo National Park in Chile. I believe this is one of the most underrated parks in Patagonia! We did this with about half a day of hiking on the first day, camped at Camp Los Porteadores, then hiked to Laguna Duff and back to the car on the second day. One of the best parts of the ...

One day push to the summit of Capitol Peak! This climb is typically done in 2 - 3 days and I think doing it this way definitely would have made it easier. I would definitely recommend getting used to some exposure before atte...

Made the summit of south Truchas Peak, New Mexico. In my opinion, New Mexico is one of the most underrated states in the union. Made the summit on November 12, 2021! Brought ice axes and microspikes with in case they were needed, but fortunately the weather had been dry and although it was more than cold enough for lots of snow, we had very little to deal with.

@@houtdoors5992 Tucks weather can vary a LOT, even on the hike up! Mt Washington is at the convergence point of 3 major weather patterns, and can get rather brutal. My advice is to get ahold of one of the locals and plan on going with them - they will know when it is best, and when to not even think about it. Probably best to go on a weekday - the weekends later in the season can get rather crowded, though the atmosphere is always fantastic - party time galore! Way back when, 50 years or so ago, I was there one weekend in May when there were almost 10000 people there! If possible, stay a night in one of the huts, but you would most likely not get a reservation as they are booked usually almost a year in advance.

You can’t see it! But we knew we were on a glacier so it can always be possible there is one under a thin layer of snow. It’s just something you definitely need to watch out for. However, in the area we were in, I felt confident enough we were on a good spot on the glacier that we didn’t rope up like you would on most other glaciers. But I was still definitely keeping an eye out.

I appreciate this. Redfish was a destination for our family for several years in the early '70's. Our family did many backpacking trips in the Sawtooths and Whiteclouds. I also went with Boy Scouts. It was good to see the area from the vantage point you attained. When I was in high school I got permission from my parents to take a solo overnight hike up to Bench Lakes, which you no doubt went by on your trip. I had a terrible night in a plastic tube tent being eaten alive by mosquitos.

    • @houtdoors5992
      @houtdoors5992 2 года назад

I have read that it is roughly 70 degrees so it is approaching being completely vertical. The old chute which would be to the left of the pearly gates as you are climbing up is less steep from what I have read. But it is a less direct route to the summit. With our good conditions, we were able to do the pearly gates unroped and with only one axe, but in different conditions we might have really wanted to have two axes. It all depends on the conditions of the snow and ice as to which route you take in my opinion.
