19.46: An Interview on Structure with N.K. Jemisin
We had the pleasure of sitting down with N.K. Jemisin to talk about the structures and processes that helped create The Fifth Season. We talk about outlines, multiple plotlines, and planets as characters. Jemisin lets us into her writing process-ranging from the influence of poetry in her work to her process of writing “test chapters.” She also gives us advice on writing multiple POVs, the power of parallelism, and the intersection of mental health and storytelling. Thing of the Week: Alan Wake II (N.K. Jemisin’s recommendation) Homework: Imagine you are in a game where you are presented with 3 different attitude-oriented choices. Take your protagonist from your current work in progress a...

Today we’re zooming out to see where N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season fits into the canon of fantasy literature. How does Jemisin interact with magic, words, and the expectations of the genre? And what expectations do the readers bring themselves? How does Jemisin repurpose parts of the hero’s journey while creating something fundamentally different? Does this work start a new lineage for epic f...

Fantastic interview. Thank you!
I have to love myself as a writer? I don't even love myself as a person! 😅
Start now! 😊
Omg this is criminally under viewed
Lots to think about. I’m not a musician but your analogy still works for me. I appreciate the change in perspective from “holding something from the reader” to “holding it for” them. Thank you!
Kool but don’t understand
I love these! Do they occur on a regular schedule/do you have a date planned for the August Q&A?
Tech issues fixed at 9:50.
Issues are resolved at 29:42.
The tragedy of the commons has been proven so many times. Just look at deer populations before and after game regulations. The concept is based on the idea of a limited resource being available to multiple people without any rules, regulations or limitations on the use of the resource. The incentive is for you to use it before someone else does which leads to the depletion of that resource
Really drank the socialist kool-aid before recording THIS episode.
I'll be honest, this sounds like a poorly written story. There's far too much purple prose and it all comes off as very pretentious.
Please do 2 hours on marketing!

One of the questions dealt with self-training, and it wasn't until after the episode was OVER that I remembered the name of the expert on "focused practice." ANDERS ERICSSON. (Not Malcom Gladwell - MG famously and profitably summarized Ericsson's stuff, and got a lot of it wrong.) Google ANDERS ERICSSON for good strategies about creating regimen of focused practice for yourself. The man has been researching this subject across dozens of disciplines for around 30 years now.
Is there a particular reason Dan went full Socialist in this episode? "Magic systems are a result of capitalist exploitation yada blah blah." No... It's just that stories are boring if you can solve all your problems with a wave of your hand.
@Ceph0r0th Heaven forbid I call out the introduction of the most destructive political ideology of the past 150 years.
Thank you, Writing Excuses! (Not done by an AI. I'm a huge fan of the podcast and I'm pretty sure I'm real. lol.) 04:00 - Question 1: Creating style from visual/audio experiences. 11:47 - Question 2: How would you weigh the value for an author on a budget? 19:15 - Question 3: Tips for writing romance as a sub-plot in a fresh way? 24:05 - Question 4: How can I make a space to feel big like courtyards, great plains, etc? 30:40 - Question 5: How can I embrace Pantsing as a Plotter? 36:16 - Question 6: When is the best time to query a project? 44:35 - Question 7: What do you do if your characters are based on real peers? 55:44 - Question 8: How do you avoid writing that is problematic with meta experience?
Loving these Q&A sessions so much!
Thank you for answering the first question! And to feel seen just as I did writing it. If everything goes well, I should have a book published the traditional way next year in my birth country but I did move out in an Anglophone country and wanted to write a novel in English for several reasons, except the publishing steps are completely different in my country. We don’t have agents, so I started researching how to contact one and do a query properly so I don’t mess everything up and follow the steps the right way. (Ah, perfectionism, the best and also most terrifying way to procrastinate!) Thanks for these Q&A, they're insightful!
Always love listening to you both. I always learn and I always laugh. You are wonderful 💚.
