7 Games With Wasted Potential (And Why)

In todays video we will go over some games I personally think suffer from wasted potential and possibly should have been better, those games that had amazing ideas, like the story, gameplay mechanics or aesthetic, but couldn't make it pay off. although I want to be clear, I don't think most of these video games are bad, and a few like We Happy Few were games I was extremely excited for leading ...

5 Video game sequels that couldn't live up to the original
Correct. Potential even of tripple A titles. For example The Nemesis System from Shadow of mordor. Windbound was nice, we happy few too. But all games are nive anyways
Never understood why We Happy Few had procedural generation. Such an unnecessary addition and didn't work with the handcrafted story
Completely agree! Its crazy how drastically improved the game would be if it wasn't procedurally generated
DDLC is not horror game at all lol dude it's an old game
How does being old make it not a horror? 🤔
Lol I mean it's not horror like the others game that what My opinion. @Dowds-VG
I mean fair enough if you didn't find it scary or you didn't enjoy it, definitely don't expect anyone to like every game on the list, but it definitely fits the description of "horror" with its subject matter and themes
it’s psychological horror though… do you not know what psychological horror is? it’s a sub-genre of horror so it’s horror
have you had the opportunity to test out harvester. Not quite sure if its a horror game but it is quite unique
I have it downloaded, definitely gonna try it! It looks very unique 🤣
re-upload? I'll watch it again if it helps. Horror is not my genre really.
Thank you! I noticed a couple editing errors I really needed to fix 😅
Dragons dogma 2
How do you figure redfall had wasted potential? The devs didn’t want to make it and it was intended from the beginning to be live service… it had zero potential to begin with
Because the concept of redfall isn't bad, and given what arkane have developed in the past we know they're capable of releasing something that could have been alot better. Also just because something is live service, I don't think that necessarily means it has to be bad, they're just usually aimed to appeal to as wide an audience as possible rather than a core dedicated fan base
MGSV is the biggest missed opportunity to expand on the lore of the series. For me personally it was quite a shock to find this game so empty in terms of a story. And because of that it felt as a chore to complete it despite a decent gameplay.
I feel exactly the same as you, it could have filled so many plotholes the series had and expand on questions about big bosses lore and outer haven, but sadly it seems to of just left us with more questions and even fewer answers
I hated the mission layouts, especially the introduction of missions, should've been more linear
Very nice video and presentation
Thank you very much! This was my first video, so I'd like to think I've improved since, but I'm still very pleased with the outcome 😅
Big YT algorithm W? I sure hope/think so ;)
I hope i prove you right!! :D
P.T... 💔
Return of the King on GameCube was legendary.
I followed We Happy Few for awhile and loved how it looked like this strange amalgamation of Bioshock and No One Lives Forever…and was so disappointed in the final product. It just tried to be too many things at once and I found it too slow and rather boring.
Very few games have been as intense and scary as Dying Light 1 when you're stuck outside at night. When I would finally get to safety, I would actually physically feel a weight lifted off my shoulders. Only a handful of games have ever done that; Looking at you, Alan Wake 1&2
Pokemon no? Biggest franchise on earth and compared to the best games we have, it's frankly pathetic the games they come up with
I did consider pokemon to be honest, maybe in a follow up 🤔 I've always tried to keep up with the pokemon releases as I've always been a fan, but considering what we know those games could be capable of, they're only putting in like 10% effort, most enjoyable one in recent years in my opinion has been Arceus, and even that had its issues
To be fair I quite loved Vampyr. Yes is a bit clunky, but the story is good and the side quests can be very interesting. Plus the music is amazing
I can definitely understand why you oved it! It would be dishonest of me to say vampyr is a bad game, sadly it just didn't hit that spot for me, but i love dontnod as a developer and I feel they always have alot of heart go into their projects, even if it doesn't always live up to their vision
Recurring pattern here is mismanagement and lack of cohesive vision.
100% right, mismanagement and a lack of vision can absolutely kill a game before it ever even releases
Bad managers are ruining society in general 😅
@640. yeah taking pills to forget your mundane life is a horrible idea.... Street drugs are way cheaper. lo DONT DO DRUGS ITS A JOKE
100% the street stuff isn't affected by inflation! 🤣
3 words: Ghost Recon Wildlands. The premise and open world idea for a military war game is my favorite of any of the genre. Not saying the game is that bad or anything but it could have been revolutionary for single player military shooters. But it turned out to be a flawed repetitive game. They didnt handle the story line correctly. It felt like every mission was a side mission with no main plot. Instead of cinematic cur scenes we only get audio files and the same missions over and over. The plot actually isnt even bad, its they way they executed the strategy on how to complete the plot. If they could have been more focused on the main story and not have so many repeating mission objectives it would have been fantastic. I still enjoyed it but it could have been so much better. I wish they would complete a remake for it and do the story better this time. Especially if they include a first person online mulitplayer mode. Imagine how fun it would be to play online with such a massive map.
Wildlands is my guilty pleasure. I play it now and then, always returning to it. There is nothing quite like it out there, no other game that allows you the freedom to approach your mission as it does. The main issue is that most missions barely utilize this freedom and are just glorified fetch or sabotage quests... And the weird thing: It almost tries to say something about CIA interventionism. It makes the MCs seem like insane unhinged operatives who are dishing out that "American democracy whether the locals like it or not". But it... just doesn't go anywhere. It's just a flavour on top of it.
Exactly. The mission structure is too repetitive. Freedom is great but there's only a few types of side quests that are all pretty similar and then the main missions which cut scenes take place pretty much inside that hut. There are only 3 or 4 missions that stood out and I remember. One had to do with an enemy camp in a large canyon, and one where you find a bunch of bodies being used to smuggle drugs (If I remember correctly) another was a fun mission at a casino and then the last mission was the ending. The ending where the writers were sort of pointing fingers at Americans for being there and intervening like you were talking about. I just found out they came out with a game after this called Breakpoint with an open world but the premise is a little goofy. I'd love for them to redo this one or make Wildlands 2. They can keep the same map with minor upgrades and deal with the fallout of El Sueno being gone and rise of new cartels fight to the top. That map is waaay too beautiful and ubi didn't do it enough justice.
Biomutant wasnt that great but the combat was very fun and i liked going around the world, if they improve on the story and maybe make it less repetitive a sequel could definetly be great
Okay, that crouching was intense.
As someane who was following We happy we from the start. I really felt a huge disappointment when I tried the game myself. It was just lame, boring and couldn't play for more than 50 minutes. It was just a shame. Thank God that I thought that Atómic heart was going to be the same thing but it wasn't.
Right, because it even worse 🤡
@@БогданКрименюк Dude no one is going to take you seriously with that name and pfp.
You and me both on the disappointment for we happy few! It was such a cool concept! I haven't tried atomic heart yet though, think it might be time I gave it a try!
We happy few gave me such bioshock vibes just not as good sadly. But the world and story are super interesting and worth a playthrough if you're a fan of bioshock.
Compulsion is made of former Ken Levine team members
Man, this was an entire list of "Games I played, thought I should go back to, but never did, and drifted away from because: ehhhh" solid list
I'm glad you enjoyed it! And I'm glad you found it relatable 😅
I really like that algorithm these days occasionally leads to small channels like this. Good job!
Thank you!! Really glad you enjoyed the video!!
I just wish that the algorithm would not lock your recommendations on what you watch. It's such a sad time we are in, huh? :(
Alpha Protocol. Man, I was digging that game pretty hardcore. I specced full stealth assassin ninja killer ... which was GREAT ... until the very first effing boss fight in a disco, and suddenly the game is all AND YOU HAVE TO MACHINE GUN ME ASSAULT MAN! My build just couldn't approach the scene AT ALL. So ... that was that. Couldn't get past it. Game done.
I know exactly how you feel. I was so ready to love alpha protocol in the beginning! Rpgs need more interesting settings like the whole spy theme
@@Dowds-VG WOULD LOVE for a follow-up in the same sort of setting, agreed 100%
Great video! The subscriber count surprised me. Keep up the good job :)
Thank you so much! Hopefully that number will start creeping up soon 😅 but I'm super glad you enjoyed it :)
I was one of the early access players for we happy few
What do you think of the game now compared to early access?
I watched Zoochosis recently, felt disappointed by it, the marketing had looked so good!
I've not heard of this! Google shown me a documentary and a game on steam. I'm assuming you mean the game? Is it worth a try at all? Or better off avoiding it all together?
@@Dowds-VGZoochosis has the potential to be really good but it needs more time in the oven. Prolly cuz some people died during production and they didn’t push it back for whatever reason.
Wow! That was an unexpected twist! I'll take a look at it
Havent played the games on the list but well made reviews. To hear both the good and the bad of the game.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Can't thank you enough for all the support you've given my channel since the beginning 🙌
@@Dowds-VG its been a pleasure to follow your path. The first time i saw what you are capable to create made want to atleast try to give something back. Keep it up, u got the talent 💪
Feels incomplete without Gearbox
They're definitely on the list for a part 2, good old randy has enough controversy to fill a video on his own!
This vid gave an idea to mention specific games getting killed by "smart decisions" one of the latest ones being helldivers 2. Its a sad thing to see when there are people that put in time and passion to create something and the pencil pushers that do not understand the gamers drop a nuke to destroy it
Yeah, I like that idea! Too many great games have been ruined because of interference from higher up think they know what they're doing, especially since most of them are probably old dishevelled men that don't even play games 🤣
I'm surprised CD Projekt Red didnt make this list.
I'm aware of a lot of the mistakes they made with the release of cyberpunk, but have they doing anything else I'm not aware of?
@@Dowds-VG Massive massive crunch, management misuse, lying to investors, pushing out unfinished incomplete games. They like to dabble in being assholes. Don't get me wrong, I've played all their games. But I no longer consider myself a fan. Too many shady moves made by a company that has proved they know how to make a good game.
These fks are never gonna get a single penny out of me
I refuse to buy/play EA to this day. Sadly it meant I missed out on Dragon Age games. Nice video :)
I don't blame you! I haven't bought an EA game in years, although I have played some of their games through game pass. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :)
Rikki Patil from Days Gone!
Thought you died for a minute...
🤣 Still breathing! Just super busy 😅
Hurray to Harold and ofcourse to Bob 😂 excellent selection of characters. Also thank u for the mention 😇
Had to include Harold! He lives in my head rent free 🤣 and no problem! Thank you for the suggestion!
@@Dowds-VG So harold is your Bob 😂
Out of topic question. Do you have double vision?
I barely have the one vision 🤣
@@Dowds-VG so you can barely see from the eye which looks out of place, is it blurry or black or what? Is that a fixable issue? How are you even gaiming because someone who has developed double vission recently can game with precision when i cover my one eye with patch (because my right eye have recently developed some cross eye issue to i had to patch it otherwise i see everything twice)
@@dennisthemenace4288 My left eye (the one that doesn't look straight) has always been weaker than my right as I was born with it not properly connected to the retina, although I can't really remember the specifics as to why. but if I was to use my left eye, everything would be incredibly blurry, I do have glasses that I'm supposed to wear when I game or when I'm on my computer, but I don't always and to be honest it doesn't help a lot, even when I had a prism in the lens that made it really thick. but my right eye works more or less fine. I think because I've always had it, I've naturally adjusted to focus out of my right eye more to concentrate on games and stuff. I can have a surgery to straighten my left eye, but my optician said it would mostly be cosmetic and wouldn't do much for my vision, so it doesn't seem worth it right now. honestly, my biggest problem is making sure at least one of my eyes is looking at the camera when I'm filming my face! I wish I could give you something more helpful, but it's always been my 'normal' so I can't say I've put much thought into it
@@Dowds-VG how you used to played sports? How do you drive?
@@dennisthemenace4288 i skateboard regularly still, which is mostly foot work so I've never really had an issue there, but sports involving my hands like rugby, tennis cricket etc. have always been difficult as I can struggle with my depth perception, and as for driving, I've never drove a car without my glasses on which helps me focus a little more, but I do get head aches if I focus on something for too long, so I'd probably never travel long distance in a car, I'd just get the train or something
really well put together video!! you made some good points and had some great choices, and the video is just nice overall. it's unfortunate your channel is so underrated but either way, you made a great video so you should be proud of it!
Thank you so much for the kind words!! I really appreciate it! I would definitely like some more people to see my videos, but I enjoy making them regardless, and it's definitely worth it when I get comments like these to keep my motivation up! So thank you again 🙌
A game I was disappointed with recently was Control. All that game of year hype yet I only made it about 3 hours into the game. Sure, it wasn't buggy but it was just so boring.
I can definitely see where you're coming from with that. I enjoyed the story, but gameplay wise I found it got kind of repetitive. Remedy make some great games, and I'm very excited for the remake of Max Payne. But I can totally see why control ended up with some mixed reviews gameplay wise
Bro got that soothing and soothing narrator voice
Thank you 🤣
Id love to see more games where u can be the villain. Quite often villains are better written and more interesting than the hero itself. Yes there are games where u can opt to take the evil path but not many games put a real effort into making that path interesting. Maybe that could be an interesting vid topic aswell. Games where u can be the villain.
I'd love to see more games with that premise! And I definitely agree, the evil path doesn't usually bring much benefit or nuance to it. I'd like to see games give a good reason to go down the evil path narratively
"I am a demigod" Kratos, Easy.
Yeah, probably should of thought of something more creative 😅
God of war?
Great video man!! Imo some ones id say still hold up Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga, LOZ Ocarina of time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. Idk if you could say for minecraft and OSRS because those are technically still being updated. Some may argue but also AC4 Black Flag how does a game made in 2013 have radically better ship combat then one made in 2024 BY THE SAME DEVELOPER
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! Lego star wars was such a great game! Especially with friends! And although I've never been much for Minecraft, I still hang out on OSRS from time to time. I 100% agree with about black flag though! It's mind blowing how they got skull and bones so wrong after how good AC Black flag was!!
You picked the correct Mario game, don't worry.
Fallout 2 is something i still go back to from time to time. Fallout 1 was amazing game aswell. Pressuring u to find the waterchip in time and if u do the story doesnt end. Max payne was also really enjoyable with its really dark story. Good selection of games and solid delivery as always 👍
I love the original fallout games!! I might have to stream them some time 🤔 and Max Payne and it's graphic novel style, Is what got me into reading stuff like the punisher and watchmen. And thank you once again 🙌
Excellent selection mate. I was in mid-20's when Pokémon first appeared so never had much appeal for the series, but the rest of your picks are fab! I'd substitute out Zelda Link to the past for Pokémon and also include the original Ridge Racer on the OG Playstation (I imported a Japanese PSX just for this game when it first launched!)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the list! I did consider a zelda game, but decided on pokemon as It was a big part of my early gaming experiences. Definitely intend on doing a part 2 to this list at some point though!
I really enjoy a link to the past. I think the game holds up.
Other than those weird Phillips CD-I zelda games, I think most of them held up pretty well! Will probably include one in a part 2 at some point 🤔
