    Thank you so much Dr Hu for a very informative session/lesson on these terms. I'm a new researcher and having to write a Literature Review of 10,000 words but trying to get my head around the terminology and their meanings - Ontology, Epistemology, Methodology and Methods. I really appreciate your examples and the clarity of explaining the meanings of each word and its application. Blessings

    thank you doctor. this really helped build my concepts. it was really hard to grasp the essence of it but your video has helped alot. what i learned, if im not wrong is that Ontology is what we take as reality so we took pyramid as the reality, the epistemology is how do we know that the pyramid is the reality and then comes the methods to know prove the pyramid as a reality in which the broader methods were quantitative and qualitative from methodology in which for the sake of the comment ill take qualitative and take surveys and ask people of what they think of it where surveys are a method. please correct me if im wrong or need some more guidance in the comments. btw thanks again doc.

      Thanks for your comments and appreciation. I would advise you to be aware that survey can be conducted both qualitatively and quantitatively so it would be good if you could make it explicit on which type of survey you want to use.

    Though the path is ontology, however, some methods require and demands Epestimology first, then ontology.

    Dr. Hu, I am a graduate student studying at Arizona State University in the field of curriculum and instruction. I came across your video as part of the course I am taking on research and evaluation in education. Your video has been very helpful to me as a supplementary source of information and explanation between the relationships and philosophy of research. I am interested to know if you have any insight as to the differences between research and evaluation, something that has come up as a topic of discussion in my course. I would love to hear from you as to your thoughts. Thank you! Cala Courtner

    • @DrHuMethods
      @DrHuMethods 6 месяцев назад

      Hi Cala, thanks for your comments. In my understanding, research includes various types of purpose and evaluative is one of the purposes of research. According to Saunders et al.'s book, Research Methods for Business Students, evaluation refers to "the process of judging materails or methods in terms of internal accuracy and consistcy or by comparison with external criteria" and "the systematic collection and interpretation of information with a clear purpose, to find things out". I would say evaluation can go beyond research as we can evaluate other things such as process/decisions/curriculum etc. than just evaluating a piece of research. And when you evaluate, you do not have to collect data as empirical studies would do. On the other way round, I would also say research can go beyoud evaluative research as there are other purposes of research e.g. explorative, explanatory, descriptive and predictive research.

    In terms of research philosophies, I tend towards "Integrative Constructivism" based on a "Holistic Psychology" (see below) perspective. Integrative constructivism posits that there is an absolute reality that encompasses and gives rise to a multitude of apparent realities. These apparent realities are subjective and relative, shaped by personal and social factors, and are not separate from the absolute reality but emerge as manifestations within it. The epistemology of the integrative constructivism perspective posits that conventional knowledge is inherently subjective, individually and socially constructed, contextual, biased in its selective emphasis. From my understanding, non-dualistic wisdom traditions such as Advaita Vedanta and Dzogchen/Zen Buddhism suggest that "absolute knowledge" is an intuitive, direct realization of the true nature of reality as an undifferentiated, non-conceptual whole, beyond human articulation. While we cannot know the absolute reality as an "entity," we can consciously experience its property of wholeness. The multitude of "apparent realities" arise as manifestations within the absolute reality, and though they may appear distinct and separate, they are ultimately expressions of the unified and indivisible reality. Integrative constructivism acknowledges that these apparent realities (diverse appearances) are shaped by personal and social factors, but also emphasizes their interconnected nature as part of a larger, absolute reality. ---- The following is an old handout that my father, a retired educational psychologist, would give to his students in his "Holistic Psychology" high school course: Holistic Psychology Class Notes ('98-'99) A. Absolute Reality An assumed ultimate state of the universe/creation, existing unconditionally, independent of a perceiver/experiencer. It is thought to be holistic and ineffable and so, by nature, cannot be directly known or understood in an intellectual or conceptual sense. Our best guess as to its physical manifestation is that it is a dynamic, integrated whole, endlessly changing, evolving, creating and extending; made up of overlapping and interacting systems and subsystems; a "seamless sea" of energy and matter in interchanging manifestations in time and space, with nothing existing independently of anything else. What lies beyond/beneath/behind the physical world of energy, matter, space and time is more controversial. The idea of an ultimate infinite eternal absolute from which, or within which, all else arises has, in various cultures, been referred to with such terms as God/Goddess, Great Spirit, Source, Purusha and Tao. B. Apparent Realities (Virtual/Relative Realities) Perceived or perceptual "realities", mentally constructed by, and existing only relative to an experiencer. They are conditional, depending on a perceiver's "point of view" in time and space. This is the experiential world of our mind/senses/thoughts and is the exclusive realm of all sensation, perception, cognition, imagery, and feelings - e.g., all sounds, colours, tastes and smells, as well as emotions, concepts, and seemingly separate forms (including self-image/concept), are created in and exist only within the mind of the experiencer/creator. These are virtual realities in that they seem real to the experiencer (have the subjective power of reality) but are not truly real in the ordinary sense of the word. 1. Individual (private, separate, personal) "reality": A unique and endlessly changing individual mental construction/creation, manifesting in the display of conscious awareness through an interaction of memory and imagination, often combined with current data/information/sensory (and perhaps extra-sensory?) input in digital form. It is determined by genetic/inherited neuropsychological and sensory/perceptual/cognitive capacities and dispositions (i.e., hardware), interacting with experientially acquired psychological and physical factors (e.g., learning and adaptation, software and hardware), and ongoing environmental stimuli and conditions. Each individual's unique sense of reality is similar to and different from that of others according to the relative similarities and differences in their particular genetic makeup and environmental experience. (Note that this applies to both within and between species.) Such subjective personal phenomena may be experienced as ordinary waking reality, illusions, hallucinations, dreams, delusions, or some combination thereof (all of which occur on a continuum). 2. Social (public, conventional) "reality": A group or social construction/creation. The shared, agreed upon, common, overlapping elements and aspects of the individual personal virtual realities of the group members. This is what is typically called "reality' in common language usage - i.e., what is considered real within a particular society or cultural context - yet it includes all recognized and unrecognized myths and belief systems, as well as scientific "facts" of the culture, whether valid or not (e.g., the flat Earth was a popular common element there for a few thousand years). The social reality evolves constantly with the changing thought patterns of the group members and can be experienced by the individuals only as an aspect of their own personal, subjective virtual reality - no independent existence. All communication simply bridges the gap between, and increases the common elements of, the communicators' individual separate realities, thereby enhancing and corroborating the subjective experience of a seemingly external social reality.

    Love your instructional style. Where do you teach? What are your thoughts on the efforts to standardize upper/foundational ontologies (e.g., Basic Formal Ontology) to be used across all domains. Do these ontologies risk reinforcing positivism/realism by suggesting there is a single, objective reality upon which a universally accepted ontology framework can be based? Could you please provide a recommended reading list of your favorite books on the subject of research philosophy? I am interested in how the conceptual frameworks of research philosophy, including ontology, epistemology, methodology, and method, as well as related knowledge organization systems, can be applied to curriculum design in any domain - from elementary school to post-secondary. It seems to me that these fundamental "big ideas", that underly any domain of knowledge, provides a holistic perspective that could help teachers and students with critical analysis and synthesis.
