The perennial Christmas play, as performed by Historic Interpretations. The version was dubbed "Ham and Cheese" as there were many children in the audience and we were directed to be as hammy and cheesy as we could be. It was a very fun time, even though the venue made it hard to hear some of the dialogue.

Rip to the best to ever do it
I'm not criticizing but, when I learned back in the 80s. It was done to a much faster pace. His strikes are all quick and hard but the other movements seem a bit slow to me. Anyone out there learn to do this at this slower tempo or was I (and the other dojos I've trained at since) doing it wrong all this time. Side note my original Sensei (one of the US marines stationed in Okinawa that learned Isshinryu back in the 60s and 70s, a 10th dan) that taught me studied under the son, Kichiro.
Hi Rudy. I also learned this in the early 80s. Remember he is demonstrating, not performing. We all did it faster than this, but the speed will vary with each individual's interpretation of what is happening at any given moment. Who was your original sensei? My lineage comes from Armstrong.
@j.r.aiello3702 I did not realize it was a teaching video, the slower tempo makes sense to me now. My first sensei was Don Nash, a 10th dan and owner at isshinryu Karate Club (NJ Shore) I studied under him from about 81-85 or thereabouts.
Americans don't understand Okinawan Kata, in Okinawa Change is normal, all of masters student who eventually go out on their own will adjust the Kata for each student according to their physical makeup. As long as you stay in your masters Dojo then you follow his way.
Loved Nai Han Chi and learned 4 different versions over the decades. Sensei Angi shows remarkable power. Quite humbling to watch.
Now that is POWER.
So…whatever happened to that charlatan with the bald head?
Thanks dude. My pops trained under uizu and always reminded me that he taught karate especially the kata as part of its history more than the present. A true legend.
The snap on those techniques. Something to behold.
Why is this style so deadly and unique one of a kind but isn't hardly heard of?
Politics, unfortunately.
@@HMudd69 really that's the first time I heard that. Do you have references
@@HMudd69 I mean do you have sources I can read or anything 🙏
This style is used to kill someone quickly as possible!
Not sure when this video was produced but, in the early 70s, the knees were always in contact with each other, always. It was kind of uncomfortable actually…
I was taught that in Sanchin the knees were together, but in Naihanchi, they were pushed outwards. Made sense as they always called it the "Horse riding stance."
@@j.r.aiello3702 - Agree with ‘The Riding the Horse’ concept. But around ‘72, we were taught ‘knees together’ in Naihanchi. Protecting the groan.
@@historicinterp - Personally, I thought that was the most uncomfortable Kata of them all. I saw very little applications in it. Isshin Ryu is a close-quarter System, but this took the cake for me. It has been summarized that the situations were either in a narrow hallway or narrow pathway along a cliff, with your back to the walls. Thanks for your reply.
LOL! Sorry that was me. Used the wrong account! I did find it very uncomfortable, but Sanchin more so, being told to keep the knees together and then tighten every muscle in your body. Only later did I learn they should be pushed outward and the groin turned/pulled up. I heard the same explanation for Naihanchi location as you. Or "in rice paddies" so you had to move in a certain way to pull your feet from the mud. haha! If I may ask, who did you study under?
@@HMudd69 R. Buss and R. Hoffman(now deceased) at the Sai Dojo, Cleveland, Ohio. I have no idea from whom they practiced under.
I met him once.. sensei chess
I met this guy in the 198os. He visited our dojo.. sensei chess
Some practitioners have a "hidden block" when they return the first arm going into the next punch. I don't know notice that here, which is nice. He just returns it back to the hip.
I appreciate these being posted! He gets it seriously. Most all his strikes look like attention getters!
Thank you for posting these videos! When did Tatsuo Shimabuku train Kichiro? Where I'm aware of Tatsuo training Marines and probably others, but I know nothing of Kichiro training and would like to know. Then didn't Angi Uezu learn directly under Tatsuo? As Naihanchin Kara, I noticed he loaded up telegraphing, which can be done if the other guy is set making an opportunity, but I've always seen it emphasized to never load up or telegraph. I ask where someone might have insights.
His strikes look potent, some anyway.
Looks like Mr. Tatsuo Shimabuku taught Mr. Angi Uezu more than he taught Americans. No American of upper echelon every did these katas.
What do you mean? Al lAmerican Isshinryu senseis taught these that I have ever met or heard about. Steve Armstrong did, Arcenio Advincula does, Karl Hovey does, Peter Carbone did. I grew up in Michigan and learned all of them in the late 70s / early 80s.
@@j.r.aiello3702 - Yep!
HMUDD, these are really good. If you're still around, itd be good to see more!
I am. I've put up what I could back then, but my VHS machine doesn't work anymore. I do have more, but they will have to wait.
That's easy to understand
Thank you HMUDD!
You're very welcome. I hope you get some use out of it.
I'm another who'd like to see more of this!! Excellent! Or I think so. It was posted long ago, it'd be good to see more modern.
Had he done more videos after this, I doubt the bunkai would have been much different. You'll find many people here complaining how simple bunkai is, or they don't agree with the application, etc. But in any of the seminars I have attended, or seen, Master Uezu always taught the very basic bunkai, letting others expand on them or discover their own applications.
13 years ago, it'd seem he'd have much more. Which Angi Uezu was under Ratio, then Kichiro, but when did Tatsuo teach Kichiro? I'm simply curious, as Kichiro wasn't said to train with Servicemen, so was it private tutelage by his dad? Where if I understand correctly, A.J. Advincula fell under Kichiro. But when was Kichiro learning? A memory comes to mind where a little kid didn't look 2-1/2' tall, 5-6 years old maybe, he was going to town with kungfu or something in this lobby, which him and his mother were Asian, she just sat and let him go to town, where he was working it. I'd guess maybe his dad taught him or something, where he knew what he was doing. Which makes me ask about Kichiro training????? Private tutelage from Tatsuo???? How does Isshinryu stand on Okinawa today?? Is it accepted and respected or is it seen another way??? If anyone reads this, knows, then will comment, I'd appreciate the answers/feedback.
It wasn't 13 years ago; that was when I first posted the videos. :-) The videos themselves are from the early 90s, when Master Uezu was about 50+. Sensei Advincula was a direct student of Tatsuo. Kichiro was taught by his father, but not as early as many others. My current understanding is that Isshinryu is a minor art in Okinawa, compared to what it once was, or even its popularity around the world. There have been a LOT of politics surrounding it and it's head master lineage. I won't go into that as that's not the focus for these videos, and there are those who know a lot more about it than I do.
At 1:46-roughly 2:00, actually grabbing the ribs to have ahold and breaking??? Or what else is it? Unless certain points make muscles relax to penetrate, too many have strong muscles even obese so grabbing ribs wouldn't be likely. Or grabbing skin near ticklish spots??? Anyone actually know?
I was taught that you are trying to penetrate, grabs the ribs, and snap them. I don't know how possible this is, but I've never practiced it at a "lethal" level. Another example I've heard is that you are grabbing and tearing the skin, which seems more likely. And still a great pain inducer.
HMUDD, these are the better demonstrations I've seen, referencing the Sunsu katas applications.
Thanks Noone. Though I only posted these 13 years ago, the videos themselves are close to 30 years old.
Sorry but pitiful. And this man is called master??
Can I ask by what criteria you are basing your comment?
@@HMudd69 he displays a kindergarten level of application knowledge sorry to say and I base my understanding from being a student of Seiyu Oyata considered to be the greatest technician from Okinawa in this decade and a man teaching true applications of Okinawan Kata.
This is so stupid. This man obviously knew nothing about the moves in his kata. I mean kindergarten level here.
Obviously? Why do you say that? Do you know anything about the setting of this seminar or what the goal of the demonstration was? I do, and I find your comments unfortunately ignorant.
Kusanku/Kushanku/Kanku Dai/Kwanku/Kong San Koon...this form goes by so many names and is in so many styles. I have never seen this particular version of it, but the techniques are somewhat similar.
This is brutal! Complete butchery of the applications!
Edgy subject matter in a 48hr. who knew. Good job.
Thanks Bill. We didn't use any guns, gore, or blood, but it came out suspenseful. And it has a good satisfying ending. :-)
very impressive. I've never seen Uezu Angi sensei perform this kata before. I've been studying Isshinryu as Hanshi Advincula sensei teaches. will still .
sanchin Kata Really good...
Oh! Thanks for remember this Kata....
11 years ago... hahahaha wow
I was at Camp Foster in 1985 - 1987 and got to study under Master Uezu in his dojo. It was the opportunity of a lifetime. :)
That is a poorly performed kata by a practitioner having poor understanding of body mechanics. He is flexible without a doubt. But as he is a small man his techniques appear to be strong. His punches lack penetrative power. His timing is way off. In the Chinese fighting arts the stomp is used to increase one's energy transfer but it needs to be timed with the technique it is meant to improve. Angi Uezu's timing is so off the mark that his foot stomp technique becomes a movement made for show only. Just like much of his karate.
Wow. Some fairly bitter words. Do you know what he was trying to demonstrate at this time? Were you there? Did you train with him? Isshinryu is not a Chinese fighting art. I would wonder what your own expertise and training is. You might want to start that before you start tearing down an acknowledged master and arguable the successor to the founder of the style. DO you know Kusanku in this version? Are you certain in this instance that foot stomp is meant to transfer energy or is it POSSIBLY something else entirely? Finally, were you as good as this when you were 51, as he was in this video? You must have been, and have been training for decades to have such an expert opinion.
I enjoyed this - thanks for posting. Reading the comments below, my feeling is that bunkai is valuable for teaching basic, mechanical applications of the blocks and strikes. However, as noted, no one ever fights like that in real life. Kata has value in teaching movement patterns, and maintaining balance through a variety of techniques. The real value is in understanding the energy flow and hidden techniques that come from a lifetime of study. In my youth, I trained in classical Isshin Ryu but found the fighting applications rather useless. I switched to American freestyle and fought full contact - but quite honestly didn’t feel like I was practicing karate at all - I missed the internal development. Now, in my 50s, after 25 years of Not doing any karate I am coming back to the old Isshin Ryu forms with a newly found interest and interpretation of this classic style.
Thanks for the comments 13Ambro. You'll find many opinions in the comments below, so valid, some not. Some have experience, some are talking out of their ears. Bunkai has several levels of interpretation and understanding. In these videos, Master Uezu uses only the very basic bunkai. He never goes into other applications or the "hidden" techniques as many call them. There are no hidden techniques, in my opinion, because the movements are plainly there. It's in what each person discovers (or "reveals") that shows of what you can use those movements for. That brings out the possibilities of the kata; it's the long study and though applying them. Most real fights are not long and drawn out like sparring. For me, the fighting applications in the kata work well if there are practiced enough. In real life you don't play tag like you do in the sparring ring. Good luck with your training!
Лет 20 наблюдаю этот стиль. Все ошибки с точки зрения классичесеого каратэ включены. Но кто может рассуждать что ве рно, а что нет? Только клетка ММА или возраст адепта :)

What happened to all of the kata instruction videos?
Sarana, what do you mean? What instruction videos are you looking for?
You used to have the Isshin-Ryu kata instruction videos. It says there’s a bunch of deleted videos on your page.

Sarana, I am not sure what you are seeing, but all the videos are still there. Start from this link: ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=hmudd69
I think I ended up on the wrong person somehow. Not sure how it happened
Thanks for sharing Greetings from Chile
Wow! Really well done!
Thanks Charlene! A lot of hard work by a lot of people.
That was good!
Thank you! We had a great time making it. It's sometimes amazing what can be done start to finish in a mere 48 hours!
everybody is doing it different jeez
hey ,youall watch youtube video eizo shimabuku sanchin
how can someone train for years and be a grandmaster and have no muscle tone at all and why is he the only person to do the kata this way, no one dose these extra shaking of the fist making little circles
I am not attempting to provoke an argument. This man looks very strong to me. Do you know his age at the shooting of this video? I suggest you look it up. Perhaps compare your body to his when you reach his age. Karate has always been a way for the smaller to defeat the larger. Please know that all "hard" martial arts look soft when mastered. And "soft" martial arts are a " steel bar wrapped in cotton" when applied correctly. That was my 2 cents.
The shaking is ki transfer and you have to know that he was badly injured by machine gun fire during the Battle of Saipan. He may have other health conditions that affect his muscle tone as well. Does not mean he's not a great master. Check out his kobudo skills especially. I trained in Isshin Ryu with a 6th Dan who was never the same after a terrible car accident. Although he was never as good physically, not even close, it didn't diminish his knowledge, teaching ability and experience. Always remember, there's way more than meets the eye with people, and there could be very good reasons behind what you may perceive as deficiencies.
look at 2:11 and do pause... we see that in the real life everyday ;-) ??? what you think
unfortunately, always same pattern, they dont know how to breaking down what they teach....
karatekid, I'm sorry the video doesn't fir what you would prefer to see. As noted in the description this is ONE version of bunkai for the kata. Master Ueze would almost teach the most basic application when doing these seminars for a large group. It's up to the individual student to explore the kata further and see what other applications there could be for the move.
I understand that, I know that, unfortunately, this, is their level of comprehension, they can be good for kick and punch, fast, hard blocking.. but they dont understand the kata and its fine..
Wonderful kata great master..
steve- its bill pogue. jim vestal is out your way _just made 6th dan and has videos on youtube. i taught him the advincula version and my ways, but he worked out with donnelly for many years and now does the kata much like uezu with wind-ups that are unnecessary, but look good. i guess it depends on the bunkai which method you like.
Thank you for posting these videos. Few have put in the dedication and developed the level of skill Angi Uezu has. My sensei studied under him too, so this makes an accurate refresher for me. :) I appreciate the quality of video too.
my master too
