Thank you for your kind comments! You certainly got to meet some of the greats.
Another Great Video, Magnificent Restoration of the Combine ! ❤
Another Great Video, Thanks for Sharing !😊
I love the video! Just curious if you ever heard of Ray Fox? Ray was my Mom's 4th cousin and head carpenter for Walt for a number of years. I remember seeing Ray's name on Walt's apartment window on main street until about 1968. As I understand from Mr.Brody's book that Ray helped Walt learn carpentry while building the train. As a side note,I worked for Disney in 1970/71 as a lead fry cook for the Pit Stop Cafe under the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Thank you for all your hard work on this video! Mark Howe
I absolutely know about Ray Fox! He’s in the video of Walt taking the yellow caboose out of the barn. And thank you for your kind comments and your service as a Cast Member!
@@onceuponatrain I thought that looked like Ray, I remember,as a young boy, being at Ray and Mildred's home. Ray carved a bust of Will Rogers that looked beautiful and I remember seeing Wooden flowers in a vase that looked real. I did love my time as a cast member. I make my own (amateur) videos about Garden Railroading, it is a great retirement hobby.
Great Video, Thanks for Sharing ! Most People, have No Idea That Walt Disney Loved Trains !
Hi Michael, Just found you channel today, it brings back memories of the "Burnsland" discussion board. Was there ever a flat car (camera car)? It may have been a gondola chassis without the side walls.
Great to hear from you! All of the gondolas are convertible to flatcars. The staves and sides were cast as one piece. I removed one of them at some point; I’ll have to see if I have a photo of that.
Another great video! I'm so glad you are doing these!
Thanks, Miguel! I’m planning an episode just about the Barn. Perhaps I can interview you for that? It wouldn’t have happened without you!
Let’s get the rest of the O scale train set made, please 😁
One way or another, I’m pretty sure it will happen. 😎
I'm always amazed at how large and ambitious the Carolwood Pacific was. Most of us would be content with a loop of track and a switch or two, but not Walt! He always dreamed bigger.
In my research for this episode, I came across a quote from Roy O. Disney about Walt. Essentially he said that Walt didn't have any extravagances except for the Carolwood Pacific. Walt had some nice cars, but they weren't Rolls Royce or Bentley (and he sold them when he needed cash). He had a home at Smoke Tree Ranch, but then sold that to help raise funds to build Disneyland. Walt also hand built a lot of the Lilly Belle, rolling stock, and railroad; he didn't "outsource it". This is not to say he was broke from the late 40's on, but he definitely didn't live like the ultra rich.
Great Video, Thanks for Sharing 😊! Many People Didn't Know That Walt Disney Was A Huge Train Lover !😊
Thank you for watching. Yes, for a kid that never had a toy train, Walt ended up with the biggest model railroad ever: Disneyland!
@onceuponatrain it's So Sad, That His Home was Destroyed ! I would have Loved to See His Train Layout !
Great Video😊 Thanks for Sharing !😊!
You are very welcome!
Will you be featuring Walt Disney's 1956 movie, "The Great Locomotive Chase," as well as Ward Kimball's Grizzly Flatts Railroad collection
Yes! Both are on the roster. I produced a show about TGLC at the WDFM for the film's 50th anniversary. I've also had the honor of operating the Inyo, which appeared in the film. As for Kimball, there's a whole episode just about him planned.I visited him at his home a few times and have some fun stories to share.
Great video! Tony Baxter visited my Railroad and Porter at the 2024 Dickensfair. He took a few rides and we had a great chat about Disney, Railroading and my 3” Scale Porter Live Steam Locomotive. You can see footage on my channel if desired 😊
I saw your train in the posts about the Fair! Wanted to get out to see it in person but didn’t have the time. “George Stephenson” was at the 2023 Fair and we chatted about his valve gear design. Tony is the real deal. He’s participated in several of the events I’ve produced over the years. Ask him about his house if you see him again.
@ That’s fantastic! Yeah Tony is a great guy indeed, and it was an honor to give him a ride and talk trains for a bit :)
Love this too!
Outstanding video and it answered a question about the track plan and rolling stock. Thank you very much. Love to see anything connected to Walts love of trains.
You are most welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Always great to see the history of Walt Disney's railroad hobby. I'm still thinking one day of making a large scale version of Walt coasting on the top of a boxcar ... powered of course.
“Walt surfing on a box car” is one of my favorite clips. Probably because I’d do the same thing given the chance.
I love how you got Bill Rogers to introduce and close the episode. Just like when he did the Park! Great file footage. Gives me more details to share with guests.
Bill and his wife are among my dearest friends. I invited him to announce the opening of my exhibition at the Walt Disney Family Museum in 2014 and became instant pals.
@@onceuponatrain I understand the track remained in Walt's back garden until a few years before his death when he gave it to a live steam railroad club. is this information correct
Yes, it is. I discuss this starting at 13:27 in the video. He donated it in 1964. It was used to build a large expansion of the Los Angeles Live Steamers railroad. They named it the "Disney Loop" in Walt's honor shortly after he passed away in 1966.
Great video!
Thank you for watching!
You can see the mystery "gondola" in the train in the black and white footage at 13:01. You can also see the "gondola" in the train in the footage at 13:05, carrying passengers. It even looks like it derails and the kid riding it shouts out at 13:07 as it gets dragged over the ties.
Another stellar video Mike! Can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! The next one is about the FWRR.
I’m still happy with my N scale model of Lilly Belle. I just couldn’t get the rolling stock though.
Lowell Smith's N-scale CPRR rolling stock do show up on eB@y from time-to-time. The three freight-car set just sold for for about $200.
That’s too much a pretty penny for me. Luckily RUclips user “Fairest of them all Locomotives Works” could customize me a CPRR Bobber Caboose in N scale. The Bachmann HO set also shows up on eBay from Time to Time. I’ll see what I can do to snag one of those eventually.
I had no clue that Walt based his caboose off of a C&S one. Just give me another reason to build another Lego version of the Carolwood one. Thxs for the info!
Share some photos when you build one!
Where to? I got it one on hand right and would love to show pictures.
You're welcome to post it in the comments of the Once Upon a Train Facebook or Instagram pages. You can also share them on Burnsland.com
That Locomotive looks similar to the one from The Brave Engineer, right?
Good eyes! Yes, they are very similar. "The Brave Engineer" short was released in 1950. This is right around the same time Walt was constructing the Lilly Belle locomotive. It's not surprising that there would be a strong resemblance, although the cartoon engine is somewhat simplified (probably to make it easier to animate).
@@onceuponatrain Agreed. Besides, the number 2 train that Casey Jones drives is named Johnny, while the number 77 # 5 freight trains are named Zeb & Zeek. Even though they're not mentioned in the short.
@@julyleonard In the actual short the locomotives are inanimate and unnamed. Those names are merely fan creations.
@@Nostall123YT Same ol, same ol.
Very nice videos - really love learning more about the trains and appreciate your expertise and work. I have the LEGO model and really like the lighting enhancement. Can you point me to the kit?
I'm so glad you enjoy our videos! The lighting kit I purchased was from BricksMax. It doesn't appear that they still offer it new, but I saw a couple on eBay. I liked this kit as the instructions were very easy to follow and the white lites were closer to incandescent rather than bluish. There may be other vendors who offer a similar product. Good luck!
Michael, thank you for your continued work. I own one of the Accucraft electric Lilly Belle locomotives along with one of the FWRR engines and the entire consist with the four coaches and observation car. Those are all now considered family heirlooms as far as I’m concerned. My friend and I both purchased the FWRR complete sets when they were being offered. Glad to see you still have one of the originals in your back yard as seen in the video. You really need to get one of those round tuits and restore that thing. Looking forward to what you may do next.
Wow, you have quite the collection! Those FWRR sets command top dollar when they come up for sale. As for the original FWRR, that is the subject of one of our upcoming episodes!
What railroad is the lantern above your desk from?
Do you mean the red or silver lantern?
@@onceuponatrain The silver one
Ah, that is a custom Adlake lantern. It’s stamped “Carolwood Pacific” on the top and the globe is etched with the Carolwood herald.
@ I was wondering if it would be Carolwood-related! That’s really neat
Cool
Relly enjoyed your video... Can't wait to watch the others.... Well done!
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you Michael.......
@4:45 I kinda don't like that about Disneyland's set-up. I like how Disney World was able to build a station in Fantasyland that was close enough to Tomorrowland to avoid it... @16:33 I thought it was stolen... @18:22 I think it could make a reasonable stand-in for one of the Disney World engines...
Not exactly. It depends on who you ask.😎
I especially love the model Lilly Belle and Disneyland G Scale locomotives! They are like a dream come true.
What about the trains of Disneyland Paris? What ate their stories?
The Disneyland Paris Railroad is on the list to cover! We’ve got a lot of stories to tell about railroads everywhere.
Thanks Michael Campbell for the continuing story of Walt’s love of trains ! I have the LGB CK Holliday in G scale-a Earnest Marsh in G - Ward Kimball from Heartland and live Steam of the Ft Wilderness & the Lilly Bell which is # 16;of #173 in G scale from Accucraft Trains
Looking forward to more!
Plus I wish I was in my 20's or 30's seeing the opening of Videopolis & then Splash Mountain!
I just wish I was still in my 30's!
I love this too! The fun never ends!
Nice hat! Glad it made it home safely.😜
Hahahaha. Yes, I should have mentioned “Straight from the NSRM!”
Someone pls tell me where Fred’s hidden Mickey is I cannot find it 😭😭😭
Hint: you have to be able to see on top of the tender…
@@stevedegaetano8188 No way I can find footage of that…could you possibly put a spoiler warning and then comment the answer more specifically? This comment section is a thread so there’s plenty of warning.
It's on the tender. There's a photo of the Mickey online, btw!
@@rachaelmajdali5696 literally have searched the other person said it’s on top of the tender…No photos on top of the tender for Fred. Literally all side angles
Just do a Google Image search for "Fred Gurley Disneyland hidden mickey." On my computer it's the very first image.
Another home run Michael! Glad you were able to get some video of the order board in operation. Also interesting to see mixed consists!
Thank you, Steve, for all your help! Folks, if you don't know Steve DeGaetano, you should. He is THE authority on the Disneyland Railroad. You'll learn more about him and his books during the upcoming Ward Kimball episode. (BTW, Steve, it was Mike Aronson who found the semaphore video. He never ceases to amaze me.)
Keep up the great work Michael!!
Thanks, David! I think you'll be quite happy with one of our upcoming episodes.
I'm curious as to what is the ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) container on your desk? I'd like to get one.
I wondered when someone would ask about that. Disney steam trains aren't my only hobby; I'm a lifelong fan of Jeff Lynne. The cover of the Discovery album shows a man holding a small version of the ELO logo (spaceship). I thought that would be a nice thing to have, only to find that it was never made into a product. Years later, a company made an accurate, miniature model of the Wurlitzer 1015 jukebox. Then they released the matching Wurlitzer 4008 speakers. These speakers were the basis for Kosh's creation of the ELO logo that first appeared on A New World Record. I purchased four of these speakers and converted them into the ELO logo by updating the colors and creating a new hub out of styrene and polished brass. I kept one and the other three are being enjoyed by friends and family.
@@onceuponatrain I've always thought the spaceship on the ELO album "Out of the Blue" was cool. There is the Cut-Out Model of the ELO spaceship that's included with their "Out Of The Blue" album but nothing else.
Exactly. That's why I had to make my own. I suggested to Jeff's management that they could make something like this, but it went nowhere.
@@onceuponatrain Somone should license it, make it, and sell it themselves before the generation that knows ELO gets too old. Or it could be offered as part of an ELO collectors release with the audio CDs and video DVDs/Blu-ray disks inside.
Seeing these videos makes me miss working on the railroad
Brilliant presentation Michael- is that you strumming your DLRR themed banjo in the background?
Ladies and Gentlemen, it's RAY! I've mentioned Mr. Spencer before and you'll hear a lot about him in upcoming episodes. For now, please know that Ray is: 1) Awesome; 2) a true railroader; 3) a retired Imagineering executive who is responsible for some of the best things Disney has ever created; 4) one of my bestest friends; 5) Awesome. (He's so awesome, it has to be listed twice!) Funny you should mention that banjo, Ray: it will show up in the Ward Kimball episode because of its connection to the Firehouse Five + 2. No, that isn't me playing on the music bed. I like this audience too much to subject them to that!
I think the only way to actually get the Disneyland engines in G scale is to kit bash them
Thanks for your comment. I agree that truly faithful G-gauge models of engines 1 through 4 require a fair amount of kitbashing. Locomotive 5, the Ward Kimball, is fairly well represented by the HLW version we created. I'll go through the story of this model when we create the episode dedicated to Ward.
@@onceuponatrain I thought the model of the Gurley was pretty darn accurate...
@@jayo1212 For me to feel that a model is pretty darn accurate, I'd expect the cab to be correct, no giant backup headlamp atop the cab, and the correct order of the bell and domes. Essentially, the "25 feet away" test. 🙂
As a newcomer to model train enthusiasts I’d be curious to know if any UK manufacturer such as Hornby ever produced a OO Gauge Disneyland RR model. I understand HO can be used on UK tracks but the “scale” becomes an issue. Can anyone here, or any UK Disney enthusiasts advise please? I’d like to incorporate a railway line into a diorama model of Disneyland in my garage.
Hi, Andy. Hornby made a Toy Story 3 set in 2010. The locomotive was fashioned after the "Old 95" (a reference to the release year of the first Toy Story film). In turn, Old 95 was based on the C. K. Holliday. I own this set and the engine is remarkable well made for being a "toy". The proportions and colors are quite nice. There are a few missing aspects, such as the drive rods and the entire tender. But it's well made and would be a great starting point for a C. K. Holliday kitbash. As for scale, that's always a consideration for Disney trains because these models are scale versions of something that itself was a scale model. HO is meant to be 1:87 of the prototype and OO is 1:76.2. But of what? The Holliday is nominally five-eighths the size of the Central Pacific 173. So is the Hornby loco 1:76.2 of the CP173? Or is it a much larger scale model of something that is little more than half of the CP173? This is why I try to refer to gauge and not scale; while the Toy Story locomotive is a scale model of *something*, it will run on OO / HO track. My suggestion is to do what Walt did: look at something in its setting and decide if it looks "right" to you or not.
Great times working on the Disneyland Railroad and also be there on the first crew for a Disneyland 50th anniversary
Awesome video as usual! I can't wait for more videos, its always a treat when you upload something.
Thanks! It’s a treat for me, too: I always learn something new when doing the research for these.
@@onceuponatrain I understand that Walt wanted Ward's Chloe but she would have been converted from a wood burner to a oil burning engine
Yes, that's what I've been told as well. Makes sense. I doubt that was Ward's only concern, though. Even if Ward acquiesced, I'm not sure Chloe had enough tractive effort to pull a fully loaded, six-car passenger train. It's TE is 1,000+ lower than the other DRR engines.
Fantastic content as always! I do love seeing CK Holliday pulling Holiday red round the corner but any locomotive pulling the excursion train is my second favorite. I’ve never seen a mixed consist running before or even a photo of one so that was wild! That Fred Gurley by LGB commands money I don’t even want to speak on eBay, I love looking at it on Main Street because I don’t know if I could stomach that price point 😂 the backup light does bother me on it, I’d have to find a way to chop it off if I got my hands on one. Stoked for part 3 about the Ward Kimball! That’s the one HLW model I was able to get ahold of! I remember seeing the original parked in a siding along La Palma at knotts after the trade with cedar point when I was a kid, had no idea what it was back then but glad I got to see it now!
I’m glad you enjoyed the episode! My great friend Dennis Flores has performed a few “upgrades” on the LGB Gurley to make it more faithful to the prototype. It was one of these that we ran at the Walt Disney Family Museum in 2014/2015.
Disneyland railroad is closed and it would re-open in late October or Early November
Yes, it’s closed for important track replacement. The Park has put up some nice, temporary displays featuring DRR history. These are at Mickey’s Toontown and Tomorrowland stations.
