The 16bit Workshop
Великобритания
Добавлен 25 сен 2018
My name is Aaron and this is my 16bit Workshop; dedicated to all things retro computing, although I am starting out with "my" era - the 16bit era - when I was totally dedicated to the Commodore Amiga. We'll probably branch out into all the other retro computers that I remember from my youth as we go on, though - the Commodore 64 that I always lusted after, the Spectrum in it's many guises, several of which I owned, and all the others that were popular in the UK.
We'll dismantle, inspect, repair, and generally mess with in order to re-live our youth. Subscribe for regular updates!

BITSIZE: Makita DML801 LXT battery LED torch mini-review
I shot a quick video while I was working on the car just to give my thoughts on a new purchase; the Makita DML801 LED torch for the LXT battery range. I apologise for the portrait-vision video - I was using my phone and, like a noob, was holding it the wrong way round...
This isn't a paid promotion, I bought this torch with my own money.

FIX: Vertical adjust motor on R56 MINI Cooper LED DRL retrofit projector headlights
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.5 лет назад
I bought a set of these LED "Halo" retrofit lights for my Fiancée's 2007 R56 MINI Cooper S recently and found that the motorised aim adjustment (standard on UK cars) didn't function with an accompanying error on the dash - turns out, that's because the connectors were wired up wrong in the factory. In this video, I show how to re-pin the connectors to match the factory wiring and fix that fault.

BIT SIZED: Spectrum +3 first power on; it verks!

I couldn't resist quickly powering the new 3 on and seeing if it worked - I know, I _should_ have tested the PSU first but curiosity was too great. SPOILER ALERT: It verks! as AvE would say.

I bought a piece of nostalgia on eBay; let me introduce you to the ZX Spectrum 3 and add a little bit of background on the Spectrum models and my personal history with them.
BLOCK003 - Commodore Amiga 1500 repair and first boot
Просмотров 715 лет назад
I picked this Amiga 1500 up from a friend of mine a few months ago and it's taken me all that time to make this video; repairing the dreaded Varta battery leak damage at least enough so that it will boot and be stable. There are some nice videos on the Amiga 1500 from RmC, like this one - ruclips.net/video/xMxWvEmvti4/видео.html - if you want to know more about the history of this special Commo...
BYTE SIZED: YiHua 853D First Test

I haven't edited a video in quite a while, but after buying a couple of new toys in preparation for repairing my new Amiga 1500 (videos on that later!) and having read some terrible safety reports of desoldering stations, I thought I'd open mine up and show you what's inside. And then I couldn't resist a quick test.. The YiHua 853D hot air/soldering station I bought can be found on Amazon: www....
BYTE SIZED: Replica Shelby Cobra electrics - a total departure from Amigaland
Просмотров 266 лет назад
In a total departure from my regular videos (does "regular" work after four videos?) I wanted to throw up a quick video of me testing out the electrics on my "other" project - a Dax Cobra, something of a replica of the 1960s Shelby Cobra 427. It's been a long time in the making (several years) and over the last few months the electrics have really started coming together, so I filmed the moment...

BLOCK002 - Removing the evil Varta battery from the Amiga A501 expansion!
Просмотров 3196 лет назад
Apologies for the dark video in the beginning, the camera decided to level-set against the bright white screen beside me.. This was originally set to be a full tear-down and clean of the Amiga and the Varta, but it's taken me longer than planned to get just this bit done due to "life", so for now.. here's the tear down of the Amiga A501 memory expansion and the removal of the dead and leaking V...
BYTE SIZED - First power-on of the Amiga 500!

A byte sized episode today; maybe that will be a regular thing, who knows. But here's some footage of the first power-on of the new-to-me Amiga 500 I picked up a couple of weekends ago - editing and format inspired by This Old Tony..
BLOCK001 - eBay Bargain Amiga 500 unboxing, behold the yellow!
Просмотров 2226 лет назад
Inspired by channels like RetroManCave, Perifractic's Retro Recipes and others, I picked up a bargain basement (just £41) Amiga 500 on eBay to relive my youth - and now you can watch me unpack it and reveal what exactly I got for that princely sum!
Thanks for the review I'm currently on the fence about buying this unit versus buying individual power supply and soldering hot rework stations..If anything is between buying 1 of these or buying an individual pyramid power supply that is quality and then getting A combo Soldering iron rework station
was good watching someone step through what I need to do myself... by the way the smoke from the solder is the flux - the danger from lead is where your fingers come into contact with it. best to wear some latex gloves
Two words FLUX and FLUX
Inductor is smoked??
Hi nice video, my station has a little problem, voltmeter indicates less than real, it is out of warranty, do you know how can calibrate it?
Thank you for this! I just stumbled on your channel while randomly surfing. You know how you get caught in a rabbit hole hopping from one link to another sometimes and its like how in the heck did I get here? But I enjoyed seeing the people silhouetted against the backdrop of the video screens with the fireworks, relaxing musics...And when you pan the camera, seeing couple's holding each other... random people taking in the scene. Very nicely done. Ok, off to more of my rabbit hole adventure, where will I find myself next?
Nice video; just got mine from Amazon and it is humming like a humming thing, noisy as !! When you switch the soldering iron on the thermal cutout just adds to the noise. Not a great start but a decent looking device :-( - It's going back
Thank ... Please can i help me for my station?
One word--- FLUX !!
Parody :-) ...
Is the 853D better than the 852D+? Are there any improvements so the hot air gun doesn't overheat? Thanks
Where did you get the headlights from?
eBay - they were listed as "F56 look" or words to that effect. Having removed them less than 12 months later I'm not sure I could recommend them, though.. the light output was no better than standard and one beam 'wobbled' due to poor manufacturing
An amateur runs this machine.... you only heat up one spot... no machine in your hand can do it properly :)))))))))) you only show the lack of any experience ... expert from america :D what fuck are you doing man ? you do not use soldering flux ? hahahahaha amateur :))))) an idioot from america who has no idea how to operate such equipment issues opinions :))))))))))))))))))))))))why you didn't use soldering flux at all, it was lying in front of you..... i have the same equipment and everything can be desoldered.. it's very good equipment for the money .... the problem is only with you and with the knowledge ;) you fucking idiot :D
Any footage of these on the car. I got a R53 and would love some nice looking headlights to replace the old halogen ones that come with it? Thanks
Afraid not - we took them back off again fairly quickly; they're ... not the best quality, and I think that's putting it nicely!
The hot air will solder the surface mount components better than the iron.
NB: Levelling motor for headlight. :-)
Hey there. Nice fix. But how about the levelling motor for a Mini Cooper 2004 . Adjust motor not working. Do you know how to repair. ?
Sorry to bother you. Quick question after I add the same DRL headlights on my 2012 Mini Cooper s I also had error code said Adaptive headlines codes? Is this same error you got before? Looks like my new DRL do have same plug just like yours.
Hey no problem - yeah, we had a persistent error code (which I never actually pulled, but imagine it to be the same one). The headlight levelling _worked_ after I swapped the pins around, but there was something about the lights the ECUs didn't like. We just swapped the original lights back in as the dip/main shutter failed on one of the halo lights already - very poor quality, unfortunately - but that meant I never did get around to investigating the error code..
Fan ok but hote no any solution pls
No gx4k has extra hardware sprites scrolling n 3x dma for ay... see ghosts n goblins n soniq
Thanks! I must admit I hadn't researched the specs properly .. kinda wish I'd bought it, now, as it was a reasonable price.. #regret
The Sam Koop prices r ridiculous dunno y someone isn't manufacturing them still...

That is just brilliant! C64 is one platform I don't have here - always wanted when I was a kid but never owned.. I'm sure one will make an appearance in my office at some point - but maybe not four! :)
Congrats for getting the QL. I just purchased one from UK. I am in USA btw. Hope to get to use it come November. I just subbed to your channel. I also have been on YT some time but really kicked in earlier this year making many videos to grow my retro channel. Hope yours does well. tj... Sinclair Society
Thank you! For me, making content is a little sporadic - there are so many projects on the go and most I don't film (they aren't retro computing related) or don't get time to edit and upload.. I have uploaded a couple of non-retro computing videos but I'm wary of the channel being unfocussed and that driving people away. I still haven't opened the box the QL is in! I really must..
Please tell me if the Fan runs continiously or only if the Power Supply is getting hot? Greets from another Commodore Fan ;-)
I just dug it out of the back of the cupboard to check - the fan doesn't seem to run all the time; in a quick test it didn't run at all so I assume it is thermally controlled ... or broken! :)
Thanks for creating and sharing this! My A500 trapdoor memory module is probably in similar condition and I'll be attempting the same project soon, so having your video as a guide is really helpful. Nice work! I'm curious - can you share a link to that soldering iron you were using? It looks like a huge improvement over my $20 Amazon generic kit....
The small black temperature controlled iron is a Seeed Studio Mini iron - otherwise known as the "TS100" if you want to look for it; it has a couple of drawbacks - the lead isn't very flexible (on mine) and if you run without the ground cable it can kill things. I'd recommend the TS80 battery powered version, actually, based on the EEVBlog review. Eventually I switched to my old Antex (cheap, generic) iron, I think! I've now upgraded to a much nicer combined hot air/soldering station, which is ideal if you think you might need to do any SMD work (not for the A500, but if you get a 600/1200/3000/4000 one day..)
