Ty Bonlando
Канада
Добавлен 9 окт 2016
Groove and rhythm-focused techno has captivated Ty Bonlando since he was a young raver in Calgary around the turn of the millennium. His fascination with the art and technicalities of DJing has led him to develop a unique and forward-thinking approach to mixing music. Using custom-programmed controllers and software to DJ has allowed his workflow to constantly evolve, maximizing creativity. An average 75-minute set features over 40 tracks accompanied by loops, samples, and effects, ensuring not only the uniqueness of every set he plays but also the distinctiveness of his performance style.
Technical aspects aside, flow and music selection are his top priorities. Dub, raw, hypnotic, hard-groove, hard, dark, deep, and broken-beat, are among the many different flavours of techno that he layers, splices and loops together to create unique grooves that will keep the floor moving for hours.

0:20 yes lad! Straight into it
Ahh! This is my first video, not the best visually but it still slams. Thanks for reminding me how much better I’ve got at this RUclips thing
@djbonlando just been listening to all your mixes whilst in work mate so wasn't actually watching been loving all the mixes mate keep them up
Have so many questions for you man i love this set up & would love to get a set up like this since im getting into techno more & more lately
I have some tutorials on how I do this, if you need more info ask away!
@djbonlando I was mostly wondering do yo set hot cues up cause you haven't got jog wheels so no matter what when you press play it'll just jump to the hot cue you want? Cause for me I mostly like to play a track from the start, & then loop it & progress it myself as I see fit. Did you do any tuts on your K2 maps?
@@gfearon9091 the advice i have there is simple and tedious...for every track you buy, you have to go through and make sure it sets the cue points and grids properly. if not, delete the cue point it set, and manually put it at the beggining.
First DJ tutorial where I hear a decent track being played
Banging set. Rene Wise and Oscar Mulero are both in heavy rotation on my headphones right now. The new RW release Moving Pressure #2 is about the best thing he's ever done in my opinion.
Ahhhh i know! I love Rene Wise, I have the moving pressure 2 queued up for the next set. Can’t decide which one tho. I agree, his best for sure. And thanks!!
total newbie here with everything....bought a used S4 MK3 and it's all just for my own home use. Enjoying your vids...just a couple of quick questions. 1) on your other video you use the K2 for the pattern player. I'm thinking of getting a used F1 and wondering if that will control the pattern player and effects or is it better to create beats and put in a remix deck? 2) I'm thinking of getting a big monitor behind controller with laptop to side. Is the resolution of monitor of any concern? Was looking at 32 inch curved HD to hook up to MacBook Pro. Thanks!
Hey! You can use the F1 for pattern player if you want to make your own patterns, but i find the K2 is simpler, i use it along with the other effects. Remix decks are sick, i think the F1 was made for them. I have a 42” screen in my studio for development, which i use for Traktor and Ableton, it’s awesome. Go for the big screen, but for gigs, smaller is better, like 14”
@ awesome. Thanks
really interesting set mate stumbled upon your channel from wanting to create a et up like yours im wondering how to go about the audio routing etc if you have the time to reply would love you to walk me though your set up i own two k2s a push 2 & ddj rx rekordbox user for the time being thanks in advance if you get back to us
Hey! While I’m a Traktor user, i believe there are mappings for K2s with Rekordbox. I sync Traktor and Ableton together using their link functions, I’m not sure what rekordbox can offer. To be honest, selling your DDJ and buying a DJ mixer, and switching to Traktor would be my advice. Traktor is much more geared towards hybrid DJ sets than Rekordbox. But if you like the idea of using CDJs with Ableton, that’s cool too! I’m just don’t know Rekordbox enough to know if that can even happen
Ive been on and off djing since 2000. So vinyl to dvs. Getting back into it again. Running a traktor z2 mixer, traktor f1 and a traktor x1. Also bought a traktor s4 mk3, but rarely use it..
The S4 really helped me improve my 4 channel mixing, i had one for a long time. Don’t like them for gigs, nothing beats an actual pro mixer
🔥 as always but this might be my fave. Thanks for insights into your workflow and im a fan of how its progressd. You answered a few questions above. Are all your effects from Traktor internal and the Px5? Can Abeltons effects be routed thru the mixer''s send/return?
Hey! Thanks for the feedback. Channels 1-3 just have Traktor effects on them, although i might have used the PX5 effects here or there. Channel 4 which runs Ableton has send/returns on each of the Ableton tracks (controlled by the Novation Launch Control), which I use quite a bit. Of the 4 sends, I used Valhalla Delay, Valhalla Room, Abelton Delay and Portal. The PX5 (XONE:96 can too) has the ability to route Ableton send/returns to each of the 4 channels on the mixer, which is AMAZING, but I couldn't do it this time because you need to use channels 9/10 on the mixer...which is also the channels you use to digitally record the mix! So next time if I use an actual device like a zoom recorder out of the record out, I'll be able to do it...so the next mix will be an improvement.
Cheers bud!
How likely is it, you'd be willing to share the K2 map, is it?
In my part 2 video i have one shared, cheers!
@djbonlando you diamond Bonlando! 🙏
Why traktor over recordbox? I’ll be using a djm900 but looking for a controller to select tracks and Que.
So many reasons. 3 CDJs are around $10,000. A few controllers to do the same thing are around $300-600. Recordbox is terrible software...even people who use it regularly say that. Traktor allows you to do much more than just mix 2 songs together.
Hello, how are you? One question, are you using MacOS Sequoia? I have Traktor 4 but it doesn't detect the Xone K2 in the Input and Output for Generic Midi. I don't know if it's because I have an updated system or because something is wrong with the driver. Thanks!
Yes, i am and everything seems to be working ok…sorry for your issue!
@@djbonlando Do I need to update the firmware perhaps? Do you know how I can see what version it has? Thanks!
@perrosanchez i don’t think they have firmware updates…when plugged in does it show as a USB device?
@@djbonlando Thanks! I finally solved it, I leave my case here in case it happens to someone else, I did indeed update the firmware to version v2.5.0 available on the official Allen & Heath site, although the documentation recommends doing it from a computer with an Intel processor, I updated directly with my MacBook M2 and it worked, then I read that several users have this problem. You have to update the Firmware! Thanks again for your good vibes. Hugs
@perrosanchez awesome!! Maybe i should do the same!
Great video! It would be awesome to see a roadmap video for starting to learn DJing without going in deep, covering basic equipment to start and techniques to master. It's evident that the level of mastery you have is just insane, and I'd love to try DJing , while having clear technical goals in mind. I'm sure you could create a solid plan for anyone looking to develop their skills and take this genre to the next level over time.
Great idea, and thanks for the kind message. My area of expertise is with Traktor and with controllers, so I’d have to be specific to that. I can explain how i got from there to here perhaps.
@@djbonlando Is it a good setup to start, or is it too advanced in your opinion? Would it be better to start with a basic, entry-level controller and practice the basics first or it's manageable if you commit to it?
@@Neoncrusader-oo1ij it's pretty advanced to start this way. I started my digital journey with the Traktor S4 like 15 years ago. I reccommend that for sure
@djbonlando I do have a Novation Circuit Rhythm, a sampler with a sequencer. Can I plug it in and use it on a channel while mixing with the other channels? I think I can emulate a bit of the 'hybrid mixing' you are doing so well and quickly add a layer to work with into that direction ?
@Neoncrusader-oo1ij are you using Ableton and Traktor?
Sick set. How do you do these cool video effects?
Thanks!! I use Adobe premiere. I have a membership to motionarray.com which has a huge library of video effects and transitions.
Amazing set as always....I'm wondering how can you do such a set without headphones cues? Do you remember each and every track and you prepare all the hotcues before?
Thanks! I set cue points on a few tracks to ensure the phrasing is exactly where i want it ahead of time, but for most of them i just start the track when i feel like it. I made a video on how to get the best phrasing if you want to check it out. DJ Tips: How to get perfect phrasing for every mix ruclips.net/video/qDr8A70hW5g/видео.html I hope this answered your question!
Thanks for sharing! How are you finding using Ableton to spice things up vs Remix Grids from your previous work flow? Any early pros or cons? Lo es your previous setup vids so this change is super interesting.
Thanks for asking! With the remix grids, i was restricted to sample pack samples that i'd load in, or take 1 bar samples from other tracks. The remix grids gave me only 4 columns. With Ableton, i'm able to have 8 columns or "tracks" as they are called. Each track is dedicated to a wider array of sounds, kick, bassline, hats, claps, perc loops, synth loops, atmosphere and risers, etc. All the sounds I use in Ableton are my own sounds i've created for the hybrid set...so much more creativity. I'm able to do so much more with these sounds by adding envelope automation, better EQing, etc. I have access to all the effects so the possibilities are endless. This was a great exercise creating this, now all these sounds I made are available to turn into real tracks, something i'm focusing on now :) I guess the only con would be it's more work to setup if i take this to a show...which i havn't done yet. Small price to pay
@ thanks for getting into the details! I’m in a similar path. So far so good, keeping it simple in Ableton to 8 channels, and testing with Move instead of Push.
@MontanaProducciones oh have fun with move! It looks pretty cool!
How did you gain stage each track in Ableton?
great question! It's a bit different than producing an actual track, where gain staging needs to be way more meticulous as each track needs to be a certain levels to compromise for other sounds happening in the mix. First and foremost, this is DJing. Channels 1-3 on my mixer are for other peoples music, and channel 4 on the mixer is for Ableton. So I care less about the gain staging in Ableton and more about my levels on the mixer while i'm in the mix. Each Ableton channel is controlled by the launch control (bottom right), which has a volume fader for each track and a high pass filter knob as well. So technically, i'm gain staging live...which is just what you do as a DJ That's not to say i've put a ton of work into the Ableton project for each sample i've made. I've got limiters on each track in Ableton as well as in main because in a live setting, things can go haywire if i bump a send up with a delay, last thing I want to do is ruin people ears (or mine!). Also, i'll make sure each sample peaks pretty close to 0db, so the limiter is just there in case. If you'll notice i'm not actually playing any songs from Ableton, just samples, grooves, percussion that go with each track, effects to create tension, that kind of thing. So there's never more than 3 or 4 tracks out of 8 going at a time...less if there's more going on for the music channels. So long story short, i'm gain staging in the mix. Also, this is my first go at this, my workflow could and likely will down the road. Cheers!
@djbonlando hey much appreciate the breakdown. Use Traktor and a K2 with Xone43c, but I have the akai force where as you use the push. I've got the akai midimix which would act like your launch control.. Some really good setuo ideas, thanks!
This is sick bro
Thanks Owen!
i'm pretty sure this counts as in the hardgroove realm!! or swedish techno? did i ever tell you the story of when i was in '05 stockholm to buy records and was all "do u have swedish techno?!?!" and got a "u mean scandanavian techno? nah, it's over. but the section is over there" which was less than one shelf. so heart broken lol
Hey! I wouldn't say this is hardgroove really...I focused more on hypnotic sounds with kind of a stripped back vibe. I do love good hardgroove, which is more 90's techno sounding, harder and thumping. Hope you are doing well Mr Ball
Very nice set and thanks for posting it. I am just getting back into Techno and your technique is impeccable. I have a Traktor S8 and Maschine MK3 and Machine Jam. I just voted for you.
Thank you!!! I havnt used Machine, but it’s very intriguing. Syncing Traktor with your own sounds is such a game changer.
Ok here is my question are you able to run A&H K2 and F1 on the same laptop running both in Traktor together
Yep! You can have tons of different controllers in Traktor simultaneously
Solid mix, man 💪🏽
Really appreciate your comment!! I have a hybrid set cued up for the end of the month. Make sure you subscribe!
Great tutorial 👍
Cheers!

Hi, I need help setting up a Pioneer DJM-750MK2 with 2 Allen & Heath Xone:K2 controllers on Traktor Pro 4. I’m happy to pay for someone’s time. I have a mapping for Traktor Pro 4 for the 2 Xone:K2 controllers, and everything works perfectly. However, I would like to use the DJM-750MK2 for mixing, but I don’t have a mapping for it. I need help with this. Would you like any additional information or assistance with this setup? please prive
Unfortunately I’m unfamiliar with that mixer, have you tried mapping it yourself? There’s a whole internal mixer mapping part in the custom mapping section, you’d just have to map every knob and button and slider, that is if it shows up as a midi device…
wich sample packs use for F1 and how is the configuration with K2 One.
Just google “techno sample packs” and find one you like. There’s so many. Or go to splice and find ones your like. There’s a K2 config download in my part 2 video
Yes brother, I hear you! Traktor and F1 here What the Internet forgets: It´s more Fun Fun Fun to compute🙂
Yes! I’m an App developer during the day, Traktor is for the nerds, and that is a good thing!
Ej,that od cool,,your sugest,i have 1 K2 and Z1,what is best was to use,i prefere Like your Style, Question Whan i pay Basic mapping for K2,,does it in K2,or must Alone forward, thanks
Hey! I’m not really sure what you are asking, could you ask again in your language and i can google translate?
I am thinking about the Mac Mini as well, but the mobile set up with a large enough monitor and possible stand, with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad whyI keep my MBPRO for gigs. TY for your video! I use a A&H PX5 with either 2 X1 Mk2 Traktor Controllers or 1 X1 Mk3 Controller. I had a K2 but mapping it the way I wanted wasn't working for my workflow. Thanks again for your video!
The MacBook Pro is def easier, i honestly just got it for the price. I can’t exactly use a company laptop to gig (anymore haha) I do recommend getting an external monitor to place above the mixer, it’s a game changer.
excellent mix/live re-mix - all the best!
Much appreciated!
can you use k2 setup as 4 channel mixer ? and it had headphone jack in and able to go to amp ? or do u need soundcard?
It has its own soundcard, headphone and audio out, so yea you can! Maybe not the best for the club but great for jamming at home
its pretty straightforward to configure macos to autologin and open traktor in full screen mode automatically. for shutdown you can use a midi event to key app to tie a midi button press event to a shutdown command for macos. another thing i learned after years of building controller templates, is that its far easier to build a single template per controller versus having everything in a single template file. so for deck A i have a single template, for deck b, c, d the same. that way i am not getting lost with 1000 mappings in a single file. you can link each template to the same midi i/o device and it works seamlessly.
Great advice! Thanks! I’ve mapped a command+s save function as i lost so much data by forgetting to save. Sometimes my computer won’t shut down properly and i hadn’t exited out of Traktor, which was the only way to save it prior to
Your videos are great and informative. Thank you
much appreciated!
@djbonlando I was wondering if as a beginner, would you recommend a 4 channel controller or a setup similar to yours? I have a ddj flx4, a have some experience with turntables but I would like more possibilities with 4 channels unlike the limitations of 2 channels. I 2as thinking of getting a s4 mk3 and starting to use traktor instead of rekordbox.
@user-eo3ph1jn8e i definitely recommend the S4. I had the MK2 for a good 10 years and it is the reason i got so proficient at 3-4 decks. If you want to up your game and get into multi channel mixing, Traktor is the way to go. When you get more comfortable with it, and start getting gigs, controllers like the K2 (or a pair of the new X1s) are the best upgrade as i believe an external mixer is better than the S4 as far as sound quality and EQs go, but the MK3s are pretty damn sweet so you could get away with that controller for a long time.
@djbonlando thank you for the quick reply, I appreciate you feedback and again, thank you for taking the time to make your videos because they are simple and straight to the point and very informative. Just goes to show you don't need to make fancy videos to help people.
Cheers! Good luck with the journey 😀Any other questions you know how to find me. Feel free to follow me on instagram too! @bonlando

Love your videos! I just got into traktor as I wanted more control over my sets. I have a DJM 900 nexus 2 K2s and an F1 and was wondering how you routed your sound to the the 900? Thanks in advance for your response!
Thanks!! The DJM 900 is easy, just plug it in via usb, as it’s Traktor ready. The DJM900 setup utility from pioneers website can sometimes help but it’s not crucial. I just recorded part 2 of this explaining how i use a second K2. So subscribe and i hopefully will have it this week!
@@djbonlando Thank you! Really looking forward to mapping my first one. A little nervous to do it, but I like your setup! I am subscribed and will keep an eye out for the next video.
One more question - did you map your K2s yourself? I really like your mappings - nice and simple. We have a similar style when playing techno! ♥
@lizsomes hit me up on instagram @bonlando i can send you some TSI files to get you sorted.
Great to find another Traktor creator who knows his shit 💯
Thanks!! Traktor is the best
How many pages can you upload of sounds on each deck. Wondering if you can have 4 mix decks playing sounds on each deck or maybe two remix decks . Each channel playing either synths or vocals or baselines or drum beats
4 pages of sounds on each remix deck. If you had 2 F1s you could totally jam with 2 remix decks. Hell if you had 4 F1s you could do a 4 deck remix jam if you wanted to!
This is SO rad!
Thanks!!!
This is soooo goood!!!!! I am going to rave now!!!!!
