Ah I miss your videos guys!
More coming soon!
@@FloatingStranglers Have you ever thought about doing videos from your time in China? Would love to hear about that journey!
Hi guys. Love the Loo ! (is it in 'operation' yet ?!) Its Nelly & Pip from NB ‘Janus’ - we met you at Cropredy nearly a year ago (when we were still new on our journey too) . Hope things are good with you. We’ve enjoyed watching your Vlogs on what you’ve been up to. Great to see Beau looking so good and the dogs so settled. We didn’t initially plan to - but after a busy 12months cruising, circumstances have led us back down the GU and then south Oxford, and so we are again going to do the Cropredy festival by boat, sitting up there for a while beforehand. After that we hope to cruise further south to Oxford, then perhaps the upper Thames and K&A (although, if this year has taught us anything, its not to plan too much !) If you’re still in the Cropredy - Oxford area, it would be nice to catch up properly perhaps. See what we’ve been up to on facebook.com/theadventuresofnarrowboatjanus and you can reach out to us via Messager from there if you’d like Cheers - keep up the great updates 😊
So how's the luxury loo holding up? :=😜
Hey Adam! Still in the process of figuring the system out, but we’ll do an update on it soon! Thanks for the support mate
@@FloatingStranglers Ah good to hear! Definitely a system that needs careful planning. Can't wait to see the next video, especially now summer has arrived.
Great work guys, DIY skills are on point! The India food looked amazing too.
Thanks for Watching Bro
A trip down memory lane! (Building eco-loos, that is…) Well done, you’re doing great things. It’s refreshing watching videos of people figuring out all the stuff that doesn’t work immediately, I think most people edit all that stuff out. As in, ta-da, a toilet!! With your movies, we go on curry breaks with you as well. Well chuffed.
Ahh, thanks Jim!! I guess it’s all such a learning curve for us, it would be pretty artificial if we didn’t include the bumps (and curries) along the way 😉
We are so pleased and thank you.
How long do you hold the solids for before it's composted, and then where do you dispose it??
Hi Carole. We’ll have holding buckets on the front deck to break it down in. We’ve heard mixed reports… some say it takes months to really look like soil from a garden, others say weeks. Once that happens, we can dispose of it a remote natural area or grow plants with it 😆
I don't like to be the bearer of bad news and I'm sure you are trying to be environmentally friendly, but your solid waste will take months to breakdown and, as per government health and safety guide lines. You should bury it away from water causes, streams and wells. Your urine should also be disposed of away from water causes. Why do you think we are having problems with blu algae and duck weed. It's why the farmers have wide strips of none arable land near water. To prevent pollution. Your poo is no different it needs to be treated correctly.
Hi Carole, we are expecting a full 12 months for the waste to be fully broken down and safe. We will be keeping it containers until that point. With the urine, we live near a CRT services so we will be disposing it down the elsan point. We won’t be disposing of it near any water sources.
Don't you need a fan / extractor on it
Hi Jason! From what I’ve read, as long as you keep the liquids and solids separate, you don’t necessarily need a fan to get enough air in there to activate the composting process. Apparently opening the toilet seat for a short time once a day is enough. However, time will tell! Thanks for watching
Get yourself a speed square for the square cuts with the circular saw! Just hold the square on the timber and use as a fence for the saw 👍👍 That food looks so yummy! Boat looks great! X
Good idea! I knew there must be an easier way 😂 hope you’re well mate
That ended up looking really good, love the choice of paint colour, it's all coming along really nicely. It's a shame you can't just dump "the goods" (lol) into the canal, I wonder if that can be done if it's treated beforehand? Do you plan to use the compost for growing your own food? That's like the ultimate recycling system haha. You're welcome by the way! I'll send more coffees when I get paid.
Thanks again! To my knowledge, there isn’t an onboard treatment facility that could make sewage safe to throw in a canal! Yeah, not sure what we’ll do with the ‘humanure’ yet, but we have a good six months or so to figure something out. Would be cool to use it to grow something though…. Cheers. Joe
@@FloatingStranglers Could always register yourselves as a water company, they dump sewage into rivers and the sea all the time and their members get paid dividends! :P I think the composting thing is a great idea, but I do think you need to check about ventilation as Jason mentioned. No one wants a stinky boat! :)
@@FloatingStranglers On another note, I was pausing the video as Tamzin was going through the instructions, I had no idea urine could be used as a fertilizer! Just did a quick google on it and found - Urine contains important nutrients for plant growth, including carbon, phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen, and when handled properly, it makes a darn fine plant food. Who knew? Not me, that's for sure :P
Excellent idea to put the JJ moves to music.
Haha thanks
Talking from experience of almost sinking our boat. I would recommend you geta bilge pump that is actived via a float and have ut hard wired to the strater battery so if its needed and your in bed or cruising then it comes on automatically.
That is a very good idea. We’ve been recommended that for if we ever go on holiday or leave the boat for an extended period of time. Hope everything worked out fine with your boat. Thanks for watching
Summer cruising must be the best! Great video guys. Hopefully See you soon.
Thanks for watching Kris!
So idyllic, except maybe the doggy fish rolls ❤ good job on the roof tamz
Doggy fish rolls are anything but idyllic! 😂 Thanks for watching
I would recommend starting with the solar panels when cleaning. If you do them last there's a good chance you'll scratch the surface with all the dust and particles that gather in the dirty wather in bucket.👍
Good point!
Ah boat looks fantastic. It looks so homely. When it comes to fuel, mind if I ask how much that costs you per week/month/year?
Hey Adam, thanks. Sure, In the winter Diesel costs about 60 a month… but that’s dropped off significantly since the sun has come out and heated up the solars!
Also, I should add that we were much more nomadic then, doing long cruises all the time. Now we’re more stationary so aren’t using much fuel at all!
@@FloatingStranglers That's not too bad :) I Think I said this in the previous video, but I do think you should get some kind of stand to prop up the solar panels, so they face the sun Another thing I thought of randomly when you were doing the hearth, you should also consider investing in one of those stove fans, they power themselves from the heat given off by the stove and can make quite a difference in circulating the heat....granted it's a bit late now it's spring, but still! :)
@@averyvaliant Yes the solar panel stands are a good idea. In fact we want to upgrade the whole array at some point, as those ones are only 175W each, and the price of solars is coming down every year. Stove-top ‘eco fan’ is on the list too! 😊
@@FloatingStranglers Eco fan's are awesome! I sent you some coffees, but the currency is in USD, not sure if that's normal. Also, the image you have as your profile on that site is upside down haha
Take it apart get to the store and do it correctly or don't do it at all, coming from a plumbing family I'll tell you one bit of advice don't mickey mouse plumbing or electrical never ever .
Thanks. You are correct and we do live by those rules… in the small case of the bilge pump outlet pipe though, I’m confident we are fine 👍
I think when you've done a lot of DIY it's nice to have a break! I love your 2 dogs. What's your next project?😊
@@Freeasabird2024 Hi, thank you!! It is so nice to have a break, we’re finding it hard to get the motivation to start up again now though 😂 We’ve got a few big jobs in the pipes, starting with the bathroom 😬

LOL that vision of a traumatised family was too much 😂 Thanks for watching, great to have a fan across the pond 👋 🇺🇸
Apart from the risk of crashing into others, or bridges, that must be so relaxing. Hell I find it relaxing to watch these videos! Random question, but can boats like yours be powered by an electric engine? (Powered by solar panels) Always wondered about that.
Hi Adam, thanks, glad you find the vids relaxing! To answer your question, yes indeed there are electric boats. Usually they have ten batteries and many more solar panels. They’re getting more popular, but are still much more expensive. I would like to see a day in which there are electric hookup points all over the canal network and incentive schemes for everyone to convert their boats to electric on the cheap 🤔
@@FloatingStranglers Yea I remember seeing videos of hybrid canal boats, which use both electric and the regular diesal?. The diesal part was used to provide extra power and to charge the batteries, where as the motor itself was electric. Speaking of batteries, I wonder how viable it would be to install someting like a tesla powerwall battery (or equivalent) on the boat? given that they're oblong shaped and quite slim, you could in theory slap it on the side of the boat lol Granted it might, if it's heavy, make the boat list a bit, so you'd need to counter balance that weight, or just get two! :) Another thing you could try also, adding framework to your existing solar panels, so you can tilt them towards the sun.
@@averyvaliant Interesting, yeah not sure about the powerwall idea, as you don’t want anything on the outside that could get damaged in a crash. Perhaps they’ll get smaller though to the point you could fit it in the engine bay. The hybrid sounds like a good idea for now, as it provides a means of getting hot water (batteries and solar alone can’t do that), while cutting down on diesel use through electrifying the motor
@@FloatingStranglers Another option might be to lay it on the roof, then put a solar panel on top. Assuming it'll fit under the bridges! Did some searching for electric motor kits and it seems to be "starting from" £15k, oof! :P
@@averyvaliant That could work! Yeah those conversion kits aren’t cheap…
I am enjoying the references to Joe’s mum. The book of knots is wonderful!
Thanks for watching Jim!
Cripes, dealing with leaks is terrifying on a boat! I remember the panic the first times I was confronted with unexpected water in the keel of our boat, and anywhere else below decks below the water line -- that feeling of terror that it might be a hole in the hull is one I can still remember. It took me a while to get used to the idea that making a hole in 6mm or 8mm steel plate is actually quite difficult. The only weak point for us was the bushes where the prop shafts exited to the propellors (fore and aft, bi-directional ferry), so we got pretty used to re-filling the grease pots on the bushes and keeping the pressure up to par. Most of our water ingress came from plumbing or weather-related issues. Plumbing is scary when you've inherited it from somebody else, who may or may not be a complete cowboy. I know folk who would strip out all existing plumbing and replace with new, just to be sure. And I can see why -- I found a 15mm connection below decks that was holding on about 1mm of solder, absolute mare! As our boat was connected to mains water supply, that meant we could actually fill the hull eventually from the inside if we didn't spot a problem happening. Anyway, well done to sort the problem so thoroughly! And lovely to see your garden grow...
Hi Jim, thanks for watching and your comment.Yes indeed, water in the hull is never a good feeling but as you say it’s important to remember how unlikely it is that it’s coming from outside! We also get a lot of water from the prop shaft, which we have to constantly pack with grease. We recently fitted a new bilge pump there too as our old one was clogged with grease and gave up on life (to feature in a video soon!🤫 ) I’ll give you a shout when the next vid comes out. Cheers!
Brilliant idea, I love that planter, perfect shape/size for your boat. I was thinking how "Zen" your video was, until you showed the colour of the water from that pressure thing...yikes! haha. Looked like rust, so probably best to get rid of it regardless! Boat is looking great guys
Thanks so much Adam! Yeah that expansion tank was very rusty, which makes me wonder what we’ve been drinking all this time 😬

Hi Adam, thanks very much! Feels like things are finally falling into place. Still so many things to do though! Glad you enjoy watching ☺️
@@FloatingStranglers Indeed, although when you look at your first videos and compare them to this one, it's like night and day difference. It's only been two months, in a miserable winter and it's already looking really homely.
@@averyvaliant thanks, yes sometimes we need to step back and look at how much it’s changed
When my partner and I were building our house we would kneel on something similar to a folded up yoga mat when knee pads were not available. Do look after your knees. As for the hair around the dogs mouths do get rid of it as it will trap food and cause tooth rot, unpleasant for all. Everything is looking great. Mark Alberta, Canada

@@TheBeeryBoater that’s impressive mate! It took me ages 😂
Hey Tamzin and Joe, that's a great little kitchen you're building there! You're really turning it into your place. Word to the wise (speaking as a one-eyed carpenter), wear safety goggles! Reclaiming pallet wood is a lot of fun but it's full of knots and twisty bits and can chuck out shrapnel like no tomorrow... I'm loving all the little touches like those shelves, by the way. And the personal paw prints...
Hi Jim, thanks so much! It’s slowly getting closer to the space we envisioned, we’re laying floorboards this afternoon! Thanks for your reminder about safety goggles. I generally try to wear goggles but it’s only while watching the footage back that I realise quite how many times I forget to put them on while doing something potentially hazardous. No excuses, time to start having them on us at all times so that it becomes second nature to put them on every single time! Thanks
That was tense watching you cut the work counter! Good job though 😅
Haha I’m slowly getting less scared using the circular saw
Those worktops came up really good, the kitchen is looking great, well done to you both. Looks like the weather is finally starting to warm up now, so that'll give you a much needed mood and morale boost I think, seems to have been a longggg grey autumn/winter.

Hey Joe and Tamzin, this is an amazing way of sharing the love! Plus, it brings it all back :-) Great to see your diligent carpentry work... We used to attach large floating things to keys. When we lived on a boat, mobile phones were the size of house bricks and they cost as much as a car, ha ha. So we didn't drop any in the water because we couldn't afford them in the first place (we made do with a landline at our mooring). We lost a lot of tools to the depths, though...! And fell in a couple of times, too.
Hi Jim! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Glad it brought back fond memories, I wonder what the similarities are with boating in the Netherlands as that must be a whole other world…?! Ah yes we have the cork key things! We should invent one for our phones.😄 Tamzin is yet to fall in but i’m on two splashes and counting
Love the new cabinets guys, it's coming along really nicely!
Thanks Adam! Motivation is picking up now that things are coming together
@@FloatingStranglers Now that the weather is improving (supposedly! haha), that will help bolster your moods too. Now that you can see it coming together, despite the stress and frustration, that will give you plenty of encouragement. Given that you're always on the move, do you have a mailing address people can send stuff to? (By stuff I mean gifts, not anything weird lol)
@@averyvaliant True, sunshine = optimism! 🌞 Thanks. For our own orders we usually get stuff delivered to post offices or Amazon drop boxes. Haven’t set up a ‘gift’ address yet but if you wanted to ask about that, email us at thehumancycles@gmail.com 😊
Things are certainly moving along. What a learning curve you two are going through. As for losing the phone in the canal, many boaters have lost at least one. There is a cover that one can purchase, I think from Amazon, that will act as a floatation device for phones. Danni and Joe, that's the name of their channel, purchased one as Danni lost a couple of phones overboard. Good investment I should think. Mark Alberta, Canada
Hi Mark, thanks for the comment! Yes it’s a steep learning curve that doesn’t seem to be bottoming out any time soon. But we’re getting slowly more confident in making decisions. Phone flotation device sounds like a good idea 😆

Welcome to narrowboat life, which is always full of surprises and the unexpected. Next year you will look back and laugh at all of this. Most of the narrowboaters who have done renos have gone through what you are currently experiencing. If you have met any of them don't hesitate to ask them for advice as you belong to a very close and supportive community. Mark Alberta, Canada
Hi, thanks for your comment. I couldn’t agree more, these experiences are common for all who take on projects and renos! As you say, things always look better once on the other side!
The 3, 4, 5 triangle is also known as the "magic triangle". It can be applied to millimeters, inches, miles, Km etc. just as long as you use 3, 4, 5 or any multiple of them (6, 8, 10 for example), very useful little triangle. Often boxes of laminate will have a page of instructions buried somewhere within it or on the box. If there are no instructions "uncle google" will have lots of information on how to lay it down as you have probably found out. One secret I can share is that your first piece is laid with the tongue facing towards the wall. Doing this means that the last piece has a tongue that can be snapped into the second last piece and should drop into place with a certain amount of ease. As for the foil barrier, the extreme and ideal is to have one layer facing up to reflect the heat back and the other to reflect the cold down. Some underlay is reflective on both sides and some not. If you have the one sided version then yes reflecting the cold down is better in a boat. Hoping everything goes well and I hope you find this helpful and no to late. Reach out if I can help. Mark Alberta, Canada
Strange, I Did post a comment but it's gone, probably because I mentioned taking donations via P Pal. I said you guys are doing a great job with the boat, just imagine what it'll look like when it's finished I also suggested you get one of those self powered stove fans, those can really distribute heat from a stove like yours.

Thanks for watching and for the kind comment Peter. A laser equipped tape measure sounds like a great idea. Hopefully we’ll have more of a handle on things by next week 😅
