We work hard! We play hard! And, this is us now . . .
It’s about keeping the eight fingers and two thumbs we were each born with while undertaking our latest property rehab project.
It’s about building and renovating using wood from our own logs, sawn with our own mill, while maintaining, everything from fence lines to feeding stations, animal shelters, shallow wells, and everything else.
This is where you’ll hear about our adventures with everything from chainsaws to nail guns. Its about what works and what doesn't with GRK screws, or how to put a track back on a mini-excavator, do a bridge rebuild, and why we prefer truck and camper over a motorhome or travel trailer.
If you want front-row seats to the show as we dig ourselves a succession of holes, fall into them, and then tunnel our way out - stay tuned!
Here's with heartfelt thanks and appreciation for being part of our journey!

Snow Stops & Heat Tape. What works and what doesn’t. Problem/Problem Solved
Honestly you should not own a piece of equipment like this if you have Zero mechanical ability or even the basic diagnostic skills
So much value in this video! Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge and this set-up.
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful. I'm going to be putting that saw to work again shortly on a couple of big Douglas Fir. Thanks for tuning in . . .
mr. kettner, would you mind quoting the serial number or model/product number of the narrow-nosed Oregon bar that allows you to use your log wizard efficiently on your stihl electric chainsaw? thanks!
I had the same problem with my bar's nose sprocket being too wide. the chain was cutting a separate groove to the right of the planed surface. I had to buy a second 16 bar, narrower than the first one. I thought log wizard could hav saved me $60 by warning of this potential problem in their installation instructions.
Really good point! And yes - they (Log Wizard) could definitely have saved you that $60. Thanks for tuning in!
would you upgrade from a gopro 9 to 360 x3?
Great question. The issue with a 360 is in the editting - and the increased effort and expertise required - - - at least that's the way I see it. What are your thoughts on that?
I think there's a big secret behind all this work..... I am convinced this building will actually be the official...."Kettner Vintage Equipment Museum"!🤣
hahaha - either that or a giant dry kiln!
Hello H & C, does this explain why you kids went AWOL for a few weeks? Busy getting this new workshop up? Looks great by the way, if you notice a bit of moisture oozing out of the screen, it's just me drooling. 30 x 65 so how many vintage machines does that equate to parked side by side? Does poor wee Coral actually understand your long term plan? Your old Fergie did a good job leveling but maybe the truck driver could have done a better job of spreading. But at the end of the day you are happy playing with your toys and that's what matters most. Cheers from me.
And here's a big Cheers from Coral and me to you. Your comments always create great smiles at this end. The shed will definitely house some vintage machines, but also will be a great spot to keep some sawmilled lumber in a dry spot. And Coral knows that the more time I spend working on vintage machines, the more animals she can get. Which by extension means, the more of my time that she can get for building new animal enclosures and feeding systems! Too much fun! All the very best!
That'll be $3,462😂gotta keep it on the green miss
Clean out the crap surrounding the hydros.
Must be mowing gravel.
Howard!!!! As you have said so many times, it all goes back to collaboration. I'm so glad this was helpful. Thanks for the shout-out!!!!🙌
I had no idea that such a simple solution was available. You are appreciated - more than you can know.
That's some poor engineering
Thanks for tuning in. My dad who was head of maintenance for a major BC sawmill always said: "the death is in the details - 99% is not good enough".
Cleaning your equipment after use will ensure a longer life and less maintenance costs.
I don't disagree. That is the practice at the end of every day. This happened mid-way through a 6 hour day of cutting dry weed patches in our fields. Thanks for tuning in.
How long can you operate the unit on a gallon of diesel?
Great question. And clearly a topic for a new video. What I can say anecdotally is that it is very frugal on fuel. I refuel it about every 6 hours, and by my best estimate it takes about 8 litres at that point. Huge thanks for tuning in and being part of my adventure/journey.
Yeah my dad hot swindled into buying a POS John Deere riding lawn mower. Brand new. He mowed his lawn with it a couple times the it wouldn't go forward or backward. With less than 24 hours on it. Come to find out, the rear end gears were made of plastic. Went to john Deere and got the replacement part, which was also made of plastic and told the snake oil shyster that my dad will never have another john deere piece of crap again. He never did either. John deere can go bankrupt for all I care.
Ouch - what a horrible experience. What was the Chief Operations Officer at John Deere thinking when he approved plastic gears. I'm sure that probably half the engineering staff resigned at that point. Just crazy. Here's hoping that all of the crazy stuff at John Deere opens up the marketplace for a new quality producer. Thank you for tuning in and being part of the conversation.
Why? Cuz it’s a John Deere. Get a Ferris.
Trade it in get a scag!😅
Wtf is zed?
Seems like a goose to me, jumps in front of a cehicle and stops all traffic 😂
Absolutely. You nailed it. The WORST for that. Thanks for tuning in.
Oh John Deere. Laid off 100s of workers made billions in profits and moved to Mexico… SEE YA DEERE. about to replace our entire fleet soon but not with Deere
I don't disagree. And I'm very conflicted about buying another Deere product. However it would appear that Deere is taking the brunt of the heat right now because of their marketplace profile - it's recent labour issues, etc., and while Deere is attracting the headlines I'll bet that others are taking advantage of that smokescreen and quietly doing likewise. For instance, the manufacturer Case. Here's a recent quote from Wisconsin State Farmer, May, 2024: "A year after workers won wage increases through a lengthy strike, the corporate owners of a 180-year-old farm equipment manufacturer in Racine County are laying off staff and shifting work to Mexico. The Case tractor factory in Mount Pleasant has cut about a third of its workforce."
Now Girl get back on that thing and get mowing…….You’re a week behind ………..don’t forget to edge…………😊
hahaha - exactly. Thanks for tuning in . . .
John deers suck and them moving their factory to Mexico and laying off all those employees, just proves it.
Sadly they're not alone. Case is doing likewise. Thanks for tuning in. More hobby farm misadventures to come.
Little problems like that wouldn't be a problem if people kept their equipment cleaned after each use
We do. We do. haha. But the difference with us is that we do not just use it for an hour and park it. We tend to go for 4-6 hours at a time. This was mid-way through a 6 hour day and the problem occurred after crossing a trail between mowing sites. Thanks for tuning in and being part of the journey.
@@howardkettner I didn't suggest that you personally didn't. I use mine quite frequently as well, I keep everything clean
"Another oldie joins the party." What are we talking about here? The Fergie or the Kettner? That old John Deere is so cool, even with a trainee squirrel chaser at the controls, it's wonderful to watch. Shame about the shed being in the wrong place, it would look far better in my back yard. Keep on keeping on Howard and kind regards to Coral.
Will definitely pass your kind words along to Coral. PS - the oldie - yeah - that would be me. "I'm still standing" as Elton John sings . . . Yeah - love that John Deere. I don't even have to do any work with it. Just starting that 2-53 diesel and hearing it sing makes me as happy as if I was at an Elton John concert. Always great to hear from you.
😢 $299 a hour if JD were to fix it. 😮
Howard, I am turning green watching this..... It would take a lot of convincing for me to get Beth to agree to such a structure. She would know inherently , it means I would be buying more equipment!😂
I think we are very fortunate to be married to equally perceptive wives. haha. A shop is like a gateway drug. 😂 It's been a long time coming. So grateful to be able to work out of the elements.
Biggest problem is it's a deer. All their equipment is shit these days.
It's definitely not the equipment of yesteryear - but, it would seem, neither is most of the equipment out there. In the race to the bottom on price and by extension, quality. Thanks for tuning in . . .
@@howardkettner correct, and as for ztr mowers I'm still a Toro guy and even them aren't what they used to be.
You seem a trustworthy mechanic
Just a hobbyist mechanic. My wife and I embarked on a little hobby farm adventure a few years ago and we're just having too much fun. Thanks for tuning in. More misadventures to come.😁
Sweetheart if you would remove those plain white contacts maybe you could find a partner
Brand new and dirty as hell…
It's a beast. We bought it to work it . . . This happened mid-day during a 6 hour very dusty mowing job. Definitely gets an end of day clean. Thanks for tuning in. More misadventures to come.😁
What a stupid design, JD go with electric over hydraulic, eliminating the issue.
I have a 2008 John Deere 5103 with 500 hrs it's great tractor. You worry to much. You have a really good reliable Tractor. I change the oil and filters myself at a fraction of the cost you paid. I also have New Holland TN70A 70hp and the loaded on it does the same thing. Don't worry. I tell my Mother the same thing but she still worries over nothing. Enjoy!!!
hahaha. Tons of truth in what you say. I'm new to this hobby farming gig and I'm learning that the new equipment is far more troublesome than the old pre DEF and other expensive to maintain features.. No wonder I had lots of folks interested in buying that old 5103. 20/20 hindsight. Thanks for tuning in.
Plowing dirt on a mower is a woman's job.😅
Everyone should be goosed now and again
Deere should think about putting a little rubber flap there, but that would solve a problem. Man I wish Agco would make some ZTR mowers.
Yeah - it would be super simple to prevent. I'm going to take a crack at implementing your solution. Thanks for tuning in.
I live in Iowa and everything JD is crap, seriously, they vet engineers in such away that if you make decisions that will save the customer money you won’t be around long
Your comment is right on the mark. There's a lot of that going around amongst manufacturers these days. Playing the short game is going to bite them. Thanks for tuning in to our little hobby farm adventure.
I was adopted by 2 Canada geese once. Their flock would hangout during their migration to orcas island for about 2 weeks on near the pond on the property. They would all eat the feed i threw out for them. 2 of them would come right up to me and let me pet them while the rest stayed around 15 feet from me. That went on for about 4 years. Sadly haven't seen them in the last 3 years.
Wow! Thanks for sharing our wonderful experience. Really appreciate you tuning in to our little hobby farm adventure.
The problem is the green paint.
It has this strange way of attracting rocks and sticks into the oddest spots. haha
@@howardkettner Go buy a Hustler. You’ll never have that problem.
Coral...aka, "Goose Whisperer"!
haha. She is indeed!
Hi…just wondering did you look at the UHI UME units at all?? And if so what’s your opinion on them? Thanks
I have not looked at those units. While my selection was in part based on the machine, the determining factor for me was finding a relatively local dealer, and that dealer's reputation. A quick check of Google reviews was critical to steering me to a dealer with a solid reputation. Thanks for tuning in. Sorry I could not be more helpful.
Thanks for your review and response.
It's a lever not a leever Also it's z not zed 😂
Yeah - the farther north one goes the funnier one finds that people talk. I'm not sure if it's the local bacon, maple syrup or poutine. Whatever it is, it also causes us to pronounce insurance as in-SUR-ance (rather than IN-sur-ance) hahaha
Someone did not read the manual that came with the unit.
What manual? Seriously, no manual. Funny, not funny. But to their credit, both the dealer and the manufacturer did the right thing without protest and sent replacement drive motors. There's another episode on the channel showing me replacing them. Pretty straightforward. Thanks for tuning in . . .

I have that same tractor, I have to get the engine rebuilt I accidently spun a main bearing running it too low on oil as it used to leak allot
Nice. I always love meeting another Ferguson owner. Such a great piece of equipment. Thanks for tuning in.
Customer says - I been mowing ROCKS Mechanic says - Sharpen and balance the blades NOW ! and the main problem is a WOMAN !
The customer apparently needs to grow some eyes.
Thank goodness there was a man on the scene
thanks for the assist "Carl"
No your reading that sheet wrong! The sheet lists minimum allowable spacing as in the screws should be no closer then 1.1 inch from the edge, no closer then 3.3 inches from the end, and no closer than 4.5 inches in spacing. Otherwise you split or structurally compromise the wood. It's not 4.5 inches or less! You have 2 issues. First is although GRK have a high shear load they're still vulnerable to repeated bending. You bridge is flexing every time a vehicle goes over it primarily along its length not as much it's width. Hence why the fasteners in the cross timbers haven't yet failed while the lengthwise treads have. More screws will not help and may hurt. Nails, while able to bend more, will still fail eventually and may back out. The solution is most likely carriage bolts if possible which would allow the wood to flex. Issue 2 is for the love of god consult a structural engineer regarding whether that structure can support 50,000 pound trucks safely. I strongly suspect it can not. The threads aren't really a structural element they're more of a ware surface. Screws were most likely used because your just supposed to be keeping the treads from lifting up. If the screws are being subjected to excessive shear forces then it's an indication the beams underneath the bridge which form the actual structure are failing under the loads being applied.
A cover or shield would be nice. Even a plastic sleeve over the rod end of the cylinder would prevent such a thing
what leeson motor is that?
