Bordeaux Vintage Ratings Part 1 (1959-1980)
Feels like the destocking that played out in other markets in 2023 has yet to play out in Bordeaux, once you have that stock overhang prices are going to move lower. If you also have a situation where the producers pocketed the high prices selling into the futures market the past few years, and negotiants were left with the stock that didn't and now won't mov3 at the prices they paid, that could also incentives producers to move prices lower to clear their production, because they don't or have less exposure to the high priced stock that hasn't sold.
I've just bought a bottle of 1985 haut brion.....you've got a case of magnums 🤣
What a great wine and classic Haut-Brion! 59, 61, 82, 85, 89 just some of the monumental HB’s. Love the 85 for it’s class while I admire the 89 for it’s concentration and power. How much did the 85 HB cost you?
Another wonderful analysis Tom. Objective, independent and level-headed. Thanks! The result of many years of experience, in the broadest sense of the word, regarding wine. A personal note. if I may be so free. Which helped me personally. First develop your personal taste over the years. Taste Bordeaux from all kinds of price segments of various classifications. From different years and different ages and certainly not only the so-called top years. In some cases it may be a first-growth, but do not make it an obsession. Testing and comparing wines blindly may also be part of this. Also put a Bordeaux blend from another wine region on the tasting table (preferably blind). Often very educational! In short, gain objective experience, so you know what you are talking about. Concerning Bordeaux, first-growth and wine in general. With the necessary experience and with the help of this channel, it is likely that you will gain a better understanding when it comes to first-growth purchases.
Tom, much appriciated the analysis, you got integrity. 🙏🏼
Very helpful, thanks👋
I stopped buying Bordeaux futures once it reached $1K per case...back in the 90's !
completely agree with everything in the video. Especially, scores by all the critics are way inflated, even the reviews are less meaningful, but all the praise. I'm so glad I didn't buy any 2022 1st growth futures. I plan to buy 23 haut brion future, your opinion?
Haut-Brion is my favorite 1st growth and I don’t think you are go can go wrong at the 2023 futures HB price.
@@winemoneysong thanks and cheers!
Let me guess....without watching the video I can predict that expensive things are not worth it, and that the quality of cheaper things is greater than more expensive things.
Very informative, your analysis is right on.
Tom will you do analysis like last year on good QPR and your best buys of the vintage? Im relativelly new to collecting and as you said prices are good for first timers like me. Im doing at least 1 bottle of each
The way I see it, the number of people sitting on existing cellars who can sit this one out is greater than the number of new collectors who can afford multiple bottles of first growth. I just don't see where the demand will come from.
To the point!
Tom - I enjoy your candor and no nonsense approach to wine. So many RUclips wine channels get into absurd territory with hyperbolic bottle reviews with tasting notes referencing scorched earth, wilted roses & 3 day old buttered sourdough. I see similarities in the price reductions of EVs - there's a surplus of stock that needs to go to a new home and the invisible hand of the market dictates that prices will fall to the right level to move the product. As with the people who purchased Tesla's a few days before Elon drops the price of a Model 3 by $3k, I'm sure buyers who went in on 2021/22 Bordeaux at those big prices will be upset at the moment. Do you think Bordeaux risks permanently burning their customer base with these price fluctuations?
Very good analysis... which I agree with. Best wishes from Switzerland
Hi, my passive basement cellar ranges from 55 winter to 65 summer and gradually fluctuates. Do you think my wines will age ok? Humidity is 45 to 65. Thank you, really enjoy your channel
Great video as allways, would you consider "Nicole Lamarche La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole" a investment grade wine with a 15-20 year horizon. I can pick up some bottles for 400$ of the 2016 vintage. I allready have 8 bottles, what do you think?
I am not making anymore Burgundy acquisitions for the near future because of the crazy pricing. The only purchases I have made in the last two or three years has been some Chablis and some Maconnais wines. The Burgundy market has stagnated and if the wines don’t show movement prices will fall. Now the Grand Cru wines are so limited that their prices are more elastic. If you invest in Burgundy go with the top wines because you see prices of village wines and some premier crus falling by double digits.
@@winemoneysong I see, thanks. I think I will pick up cases of Pichon lalande and Pichon baron instead. I get the 2019 lalande at 175$ per bottle and the baron 2018 at 155$ per bottle
@@magnuseveb8305 Those are fair prices for those wines. The 2019 & 2020 prices are similar to the 2023 prices so I would prefer the vintages that have the bottle age.
Great video. You’re the best !
Hey Tom, great video! Some good recommendations!
Thanks! Hope to see you again soon.
Really great video would love to see a video regarding Rieslings reviews
great video, would love to see more burgundy recommendations from you
Unfortunately, with the prices of Burgundy being out of control the interest in these has waned. The market has basically stagnated and the wines are not moving thru the market. Village wines like Meursault sells for around $100. Even trophy wines like Roumier & Rousseau are sitting waiting for buyers.
Great video Tommy
Remelluri blanco is incredible
Extraordinary! Thanks for sharing.
The wine market ruined the diversity of the California agriculture. California lost acres of fruit trees to the wine grape.
Well there’s too many grape vines in Cali now so the olive trees and almonds will rebound. Law of supply and demand.
younger generation has access to legal marijuana also
That’s a great point and the wine industry is realizing how the Cannabis industry is cutting into the wine business (especially with the under 35 year old segment).
Thanks for the reviews. I really appreciate the Costco wine reviews. Informative video. Thanks.
I recommend the Lindes de Remelluri Rioja 2016 too. Where I live (Denmark) it’s been on sale for a while and you can pick it up for $ 15 😊
Nice price! Those are the type of wines that belong on the tables of wine drinkers. Quality & Value.
Monopole means that there is only one owner of the 'lieu dit', of the named vineyard. Clos means that there is a enclosure around it.
True
I have several bottles of Lindes de Remelluri Rioja and it's very good value. The thing is £25 is a serious sweet point for many excellent value Riojas. Spanish wine is killing it at that price.
Would love your thoughts in a video on 2023 Bordeaux futures!
I did a 2023 Bordeaux Futures episode three weeks ago and will have a follow up soon.
I opened the 2016 Chateau Cantemerle on Friday night and it was corked 😩.
The quality of corks have supposedly improved of the decade or two but it still occurs once in awhile. Bummer😢
@@winemoneysong - Yes, fortunately this was a first for me in a recent vintage. Interestingly, I have only had corked bottles from Bordeaux, no other region. It could be that most of my aged wines come from Bordeaux. 🤷🏼♂️. What is your experience with corked wine?🍷
@@coryz6880 It is not a country problem it’s a cork quality problem. I have experienced bad corks from every area but as I said the defective cork problem has diminished greatly. There have been times when I pulled the cork and sniffed and smelled the moldy cork but the wine was fine. This means that sometimes the cork is bad but the defect doesn’t get into the wine.
I surprised at all the bottles that are standing upright. Aren’t you worried about the corks drying out?
The bottles that are standing up are bottles I expect to use in the near future. This allows any sediment in the bottle to settle to the bottom.
@@winemoneysong that makes sense. You have a lovely collection. Thanks for sharing.
Spanish (and Portuguese) wines are slaying it for value. I can buy a superb Spanish wine for £25. A French equivalent is £100. There's excellent value in Italy too, once you stop buying the obvious stuff. Seriously, Spanish wine has quietly gone about transforming itself in the last twenty years. There's massive regional variety and the quality has skyrocketed. The price of good French wine is ridiculous these days and I don't miss it one bit. We don't have to wait for the price to come down and then go back to buying the same old stuff. There's loads of excellent wine out there for a fraction of the price.
2014 is a very good vintage. What are you talking about! Comparing to 17 and 21 is a joke!
2014 has some very good wines from Cabernet Sauvignon on the left bank but the 2014’s are very drinkable now. A middling vintage. While 2017 and 2021’s are comparable in that both years had frost problems in the spring leading to a small somewhat dilute crop. The strongest wines are on the left bank where Cabernet Sauvignon excelled. The two things that the three vintages (2014,2017,2021) have in common are they are early maturing and Bordeaux can’t give them away. You may like one vintage over the other but the market has decided they don’t care about them (no matter what the ratings say). I miss spoke comparing the 21s & 23s.
2014 is a Good(not Very Good) vintage. 2021 got a small boost from most pro wine critics. 2012 & 2014 are comparable(Drink Up!) I just had a 2017 Moulin du Cadet(Rt Bank. 93+ Avg from pro critics. Wine Advocate 95???). BIG hole in the middle, and why I don't buy off-vintages. Still primary, but I don't think it will get better, just different. 90-Points for me, over the course of 1 hour, no decant, but open without the cork. Increased chalky tannins(overly macerated?) at the end. 2023--A vintage for Beginning Collectors. Don't go Nuts, 3 bottles of a couple of Chateaux, in each Appellation(NO 1st or 2nds). STRICT Selection, & PROPER storage.
What a wonderful story. My story is similar with my mother. Thank you
The best wine video ever! Wish everyone is filled with love and gives love to others. Thanks!
God bless you, Sir. Kindness to fellow men is the greatest gift one can make to oneself.
Seems like a giant hassle. Better to pay for third party storage unless you live in middle of nowhere
Tom is a legend in the making! Really appreciate the content Tom
Great content, dodgy logo. Thanks for your efforts Tom
I always listen to Tom who calls a spade a spade. Dodgy logo but great content
Great story Tom. We're never more like God than when we love and forgive.
Sound advice. Especially when it comes to checking out your inventory. I've been commenting about that recently because I have a lot of good wine that really needs opening. Trouble is finding the right occasion but I'm realising there's no such thing. Crack open a good one with your pasta tonight or pot of Spanish lentils. Just open the stuff. We can't take it with us to the great decanter in the sky.
Lately I’ve been making sure to open up several special bottles each month (even if my wine friends are too busy to show up). Make yourself the special guest who deserves that great wine.
@@winemoneysong Totally agree. We spent our own money on it with a mind to to future. That time is now when prices are ridiculous.
What a great and moving video. I completely agree with your sentiment. My mother and father were both only children and came from completely opposite social class. Somehow they occupied the difficult spaces in their background. My mother was born during the war and spent her childhood in the kind of poverty in Britain that is reserved to history books. She left a chaotic and alcoholic home at 16 with nothing and made something of her life. I was in my 20's when I realised that both my imperfect parents were only human with even more emotional baggage than I had. They did their best. My mother is still alive and I bless every day I have her.
❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing your wisdom
Good video. Yep, the Chinese market has collapsed and it's the same all over the world. Top end Bordeaux is the domain of millionaires interested in wine. The vast majority of the wine loving middle class are tightening their belts. Furthermore, as has been observed on this channel, people are loosing interest in wine at an alarming rate. When I'm in France, Spain and Italy I see tables of beer and the odd wine bottle. If restaurants buy this stuff they'll struggle to sell it. The mark up for restaurant wine is so obscene in the U.K that people just drink beer when they eat out. At the same time as all of this going on the producers in Bordeaux are churning out even more wine. One thing I've become more and more aware of is how many wine lovers just aren't interested in Bordeaux wines any more. The price/quality return is terrible. We have access to great wines from all over the world these days and many buyers are interested in trying out different regions and grape varieties. I buy wine from specialist shops which have hunted down really interesting wines and offer great value. We also want flexibility. Having to buy by the case is so out of date. There's still a market for that old fashioned, Bordeaux by the case, style but it is diminishing with the ageing demographic. Young people aren't interested in wine, especially this kind of wine and they don't want to wait a lifetime to open a bottle. The prices are terrible and there is very good wine elsewhere which offer much better value.
Wow.. dream collections.
Been working my way through the catalog of videos. Heard you mention a couple of times about buying at auction for less than retail …and also Produttori for ~$35😮 Can you point me in the right direction…where can I find wine at great prices. I’m not familiar with the wine auctions and I never really find anything under retail.
Thanks, Tom! If you need any help finishin , Let me know.. I tell jokes and great singer after a few glasses. Cheers!
Sounds like a plan.
@@winemoneysong jokes aside.. can you tell me what online auctions you use or recommend? am a newbie to this :) thanks again ! am in texas
For some these wines under $50 that offer good value for money, would you be buying these 2022/2023 futures over the 2019/2020 releases etc, which are around the same price or a few dollars cheaper in most cases compared to the 2022 futures pricing? I’m not as knowledgeable in this realm but I’m skeptical about these new vintages but it’s also hard to ignore the hype of 2022 and the 20-30% price cut of the 2023
2019 & 2020 are excellent vintages with earlier drinkability. The extra age in the bottle is a big plus.
