Sailing Double Trouble
Новая Зеландия
Добавлен 5 дек 2016
Sailing and Cruising the World is our passion! We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you.
In 2016, inspired by the likes of SV Delos, Sailing La Vagabonde and Gone with The Wynns, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41Evo sailing catamaran Double Trouble. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve.
We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second.
We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You won't find any fishing footage on this channel!

Avoiding heavy weather - Our longest ever Pacific Voyage - Marshall Islands to Fiji.
This week we are travelling in one of the remotest parts of the Pacific Ocean- Between the Kiribati group and Tuvalu. With heavy weather forecast for our approach to Fiji we slow down and heave to while waiting for the weather to pass. In the meantime we are kept very busy with squalls and avoiding a large number of fishing vessels.

This yellow canoe are garbage 😂😂😂😂
Traditional canoe are better than that garbage 😂😂😅😅
I love what is being done here. I used to live in those islands when I worked for the US army in education. I grew to love the locals more than my "own" people. They still are like fish! No colonization has ever overcome their relationship with the sea. But the traditional craft are quite heavy. The wood is hard to find, and when you do find some, you kinda want to leave it because it is so scarce. Koa, that lovely and perfect wood, is almost gone! I much approve. Cheers.
very nicely done vid. I like the tenor. and prudent of you to wait for that big Fella !

Can you please help me by telling that I have to go from Fiji to New Zealand. I only want a cruise ship from Fiji to Samoa and Auckland. Please note that Apia Samoa (Not American Samoa) . Fiji, Suva, Apia Samoa and finished Auckland New Zealand. Please reply me. Thanks for your video ☺️
Safe that Marshall islands flag, that will make a great souvenir frame it with how many miles blown on double trouble
Why are these guys building boats out of plywood? THats idiotic. Use real wood seriously.
you could avoid nanoplastic polymer paint and instead use sand with agar agar or starch and car's ceramic nanocoating for waterproofing. also you can avoid expoxy and glass fiber with flax, jute, hemp, etc fibers and some natural glue as well, or use instead flexible skin-on-frame sof with those fabrics
Don't you guys have a spinnaker?

Being vegan and sailing blue water could only happen in the 21st century. Completely opposite to all native cultures.
What a dream run 23 to 30 knots tailwind. Mainsail down, storm jib up and averaging 8 to 10 knots .Beautiful.

It is not "aotearoa" as some people refer to New Zealand as. The Maoris arrived from the north and when they landed at Great Barrier Island ( which they called Aotea ) they climbed to the top of a hill and saw another island in the distance, covered in white clouds. They called that island "aotearoa" and some people incorrectly say that it means "land of the long white cloud". Unfortunately, there were many similar meanings for the same sounds that made up the Maori's speech, as they had no common written meanings such as the english alphabet systems of unification of speech sounds and meanings. Aotearoa actually means "another good island" and when both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand were explored they gave both islands separate names. They did not name both Islands as one place such as in other cultures that could do so, ( with a written form of word meaning ) until modern times, when some Maoris decided that New Zealand was called "Aotearoa" by the first Maoris to arrive here, and so they claim that the name for New Zealand should be "Aotearoa" and not "New Zealand". The Maoris communicated sounds with movements ( their haka and other singing dances a good example ) and never had a symbolic recognition written communication which makes their non-european verbal communication tribal related. This led to confusion and many wars between each tribe, and the construction of communal tribal 'Pa's" ( villages ) were surrounded by barriers to invasion by another tribe. In today's times the Maori tribe that settled in the South Island ( Ngh Tahu ) call the South Island the same name they have been calling it since they arrived, and have said that it will never be called "Aotearoa" or anything else. The current push for Maori names and road signage is just a political ploy for the Labour Party to get the Maoris support as voters, and it is just another type of election bribe.
That is a clean marina I can verify that
3:34 you are teaching them the Morden way

Amazing video! Thanks so much. Why is the main hull of the traditional proa rounder on the windward side and flatter on the other?
I think the idea is to generate some lift to windward, rather like an aircraft wing. Some of the Hobie catamarans have also adopted this feature.
@@malin5468 Interesting. So does it counter the force of the wind?
@@Bloomio95 The flat outer (leeward) side helps to prevent leeway. Think of trying to push a flat plank of wood sideways through the water-it would be very difficult. The inner (windward) side has the opposite effect. Because this side is curved (looking from above), the distance the water has to travel from bow to stern is longer than on the flat side. The water therefore has to travel slightly further between these two points (Bernoulli’s Principle), thus creating a reduction in pressure. In sailing terms this is called lift and is what lifts the Americas Cup boats out of the water. The hydrofoils on the AC boats and other sailing hydrofoils are however much longer-rather like a plane wing, so the lift is much greater. On the proa the hull would have to be much deeper to generate really significant lift. Or they could install a dagger board with an asymmetrical cross section (flat side to leeward). But it seems that the flat side of the proa hull is sufficient. The best description of catamaran hulls is given in a recent Joyrider video on RUclips.
Understood, thanks very much!@@malin5468

Interesting Wall. Looks like previous civilization built that wall. )))
It's 2000+km long and 2km tall. Now fully removed from all maps.
I'm just wondering if you've ever encountered a rogue wave.
Boat building is the best way for many to overcome so many personal challenges. We have been building many Optis and saw the changes in peoples lives - we actually using boatbuilding and sailing to build LifeSkills. Too bad that too many schools stopped their work shops, a big loss for children. Well done guys. For me it's most rewarding
Hello dears, so nice to have news from you. I have just bought a FP Lipari as well to move to live aboard. I have a question regarding the anchor: I’d like to buy a Mantus or a Rocna, what weigh you suggest on the base of experience? 25 or 30 kg? Many thanks. All the best!
What's the brown goop they were spreading on the base of the boat at about 3 min
very horrible in the bottom of ocean.
We love it 🙃
Saw you in the creators group. Just subbed. And heart breaking about Squander.
Thanks for subbing 👍🏻. Yes it was awful re Squander , but Sally and Forfar are now set up on a new sailboat 😊👍🏻
Kat and I enjoyed you latest production, Bravo. Hopefully we will see you in an anchorage soon. I will PM you.👍🇫🇯🇨🇦❤️
Glad you enjoyed it . Very much looking forward to seeing you guys soon ⛵️😊💜
Hi guys, great to see you back on the water. If I can ask what are your rough plans? Hang around Fiji? As for us off to pick up our FP in Greece in May after 2.5 yrs. All good being back on the water. Cheers SV Rukus
We are back in New Zealand and have been since October 2020. Long story as Jo got a cancer diagnosis , but out Facebook page has all the news . All will be revealed in upcoming videos , but plans are that we will likely stay in NZ this winter unless Vanuatu or New Cal open up.
Hello dears, how are you? How Jo does feel? We miss your news. All the best. Hugs from Sicily.
To echo some other comments, its great to have your videos again! After you recover from this passage, it would be great if you could share your procedure for heaving-to. Also, I think you covered this once upon a time, but do you carry (and ever deploy) a drogue and sea-anchor? Would a drogue, or even trailing a warp of line, have been sufficient to slow you down in this situation (to allow the bad weather to pass)?
Hi Doug! We do not have drogues or sea anchors, but have researched them a lot. We have taken advice and their use is a bit complicated as we are a 2 handed crew. So if we needed to we have long lines and a spare anchor that we can deploy if needed. Explaining the setup for heaving to is a bit long, so maybe worth a video!
Good to see you back and posting. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid.
Thanks guys. Hope you are keeping well.
Thank you for sharing. Have missed your videos. Love OAKS
