This is the last part of a 3 video series that shows our process for making Traditional Japanese Kumiko screens.
We use only hand-tools and traditional Japanese methods and designs for our screens. The videos have no music and no talking, just relaxing and quiet woodworking.
In this video you can see the process of making the Asanoha kumiko pattern for the screen
Please watch the other two videos to see the rest of the build process.

A simple cabinet is a beautiful thing. Setting up the new workshop has been stressful. It can be a display cabinet, a tea cabinet or perhaps an alter. We used the wood left over from old projects. Wood that was rejected because its color wasn't perfect. For this cabinet though the imperfections are the focus. The design is kept simple and clean so the texture and the color of the wood can stand...

    Thank you for showing this perfect craftmanship. Can you please also explain how you lay out the marking for the half-lap joints in such a precise manner?

    Those tiny little clamps are so cute that they actually drove a tear into my eyes. Why the water in the joints? Are you wet-bending into shape to relieve some pressure?

    • @The_Altered
      @The_Altered 3 месяца назад

      I think the water is applied to soak into the end grain of the joints so it swells and closes up the gaps in the joints

    Was there a significance in there being five? Does it have to be an odd number? The work was worthy of your teacher.

    This is so well made, it will last a thousand years!! Considering that these were made to be show panels, the frame could have been simple miter joints, but the effort you took to make them using traditional joinery shows your focus on perfection. It is an honor and inspiration to watch your work. I may never come anywhere close to you in my craftsmanship, but you have permanently altered my mindset with this project. Thank you for sharing with us.

    Please note all those who show off their big expensive workshops, simple elegance can be achieved by just a few tools, the most important of which is the skill of the hands using them……..!
