The purpose of this channel is to present - and in many cases to repair, in order to extend the life of - the machines we grew up with and ultimately made us the technology enthusiasts we are today. Together, we'll be reviewing, repairing, modifying and testing several systems from the past, but also newer machines that give us joy. Many special thanks to all who contribute with donations, you'll be watching the reviews and presentations as soon as possible.
1990 - Atari VCS clone saved... Future upgrade projects planned..
By the time the legendary Atari VCS 2600 console was finally killed by Atari, its legacy continued on with plenty of clones from China, with built-in games up until the mid-90's or so.
They are marketed under many different names throughout the world, but the manufacturers all used the same All-In-A-VCS CPU chip, the 6591 mostly.
The built-in games were pretty limited, for the most part, variations of the same games, in different looks-difficulty-colors-feels and levels.

I think your collector and emitter are reversed. Normally, the emitter of an NPN is on the ground side.
Worked for me, took a quarter turn
Hello, did you detect the pins on the input connectors? I have a CT900, too, but I am struggling in understanding how to connect a Commodore 64 or an Amiga. Thank you for your help.
Ciao Paolo! The truth is i have sold this monitor along with a Sinclair QL and the RGB 15-pin cable last year so, i cannot really find the connections now. On the other hand, when it was tested with MPEG/4 TV decoder and simple Composite signal, I remember I have found (trial-n-error) cable via the PAL-CCIR 11:07 5Din socket - and it worked perfectly, for SEGA console as well. The RGB-AF would be better of course but i had the same problem with you. I know it is a pain to get any information or schematics for these monitors, that is why i was playing around with the 5-Din myself 😞 Hope this helps and thank you a million for watching!
You have already from the circuit composite output
Hey Paul, I know what you mean...combine the existing signals and go through a transistor for amplification ... the schematic is pretty straight fwd. and i think i will go for it! Thanks!
Love the new video format. That Atari clone was a nice find you should 100% solder on a cartridge connector and make the console complete, I mean how else would you play Bob and the alien fireflies?
Hello Peter! Thank you so much! I have to get the connector for sure but I looked around and everywhere is "0" items in stock... 😞 I have to admit that ..I haven't downloaded Bob and the alien fireflies yet.. But since i still have some PCBs for Atari DIY cartridges, i am going to do it soon!
My ps2 slim 77004 also makes a weird similar noise but is like a grinding and it only does it when it reads games, and burned games only work sometimes and not
Nice now how well does this work with Fast Loader cart?
Hi there VaderOne, the truth is i haven't tried the combination of these two so far, but it is definitely a great idea for a future video mate! Thank you so much for watching and for the inspiration! Cheers!
Great video Teo! 😊
Dude , can you tell me the frequency of crystal, and parameters of the caps and the resistor near it? 😊
Hi mate, thanks for dropping in! Crystal is 17.734475 MHz (which is pretty much standard), the caps are 10μF electrolytic @16V. and a ceramic of 47pF The resistor...is probably 220KΩ @ 1/4W. Τhe resistor is worn so not really clear. Atariage.com has several articles to visit! Cheers!
Thank you sooooooooo much. It made my PS2 Slim a lot smoother. It's very quiet now and works perfectly.
Still have it somewhere! ❤
Not the best solution. It isn't compatible with games more than 48k, it doesn't load ATR files and it doesn't work with all types of cartridge files. This means its unable to run the best classic or amazing homebrew games. I would suggest the SUBcart with its proprietary cables which provides 1MB expansion memory, Stereo Pokey sound upgrade, RTC, Multimedia player and its compatible with all types of files.
Hello and thanks for the info! All valid information shared, the truth is that SUBcart is the top choice for retro Atari XL/XE. I haven't tested it so far but the specs are great! Looking fwd. to getting my hands on it. Thanks again for watching and for your contribution! Your videos are awesome btw!
my dvd is set at 300 ohm original so.. what
@@melihhabi Hi and thanks for dropping by! Like you said, when the laser used to be new, the adjusted value was such. Now, needs readjustment ...try tiny increments clockwise and test...I can tell by experience that it will need just a couple of times! I hope this helps and your console will be working just fine!!!
Great video. I had one of these, presented to me in 1978 as a Christmas present. Worked great for years, but the LED light stopped working, I opened it up and attempted a few times to resolder the connections which was quite difficult but I managed it in the end. A lovely little radio..
@@bonearrowgroup I cannot exchange old reliable and understandable technology with anything modern! I am glad you own this wonderful piece of radio history and thank you for watching!!
2 years have passed, is the product any good?
@@winstallation It is just another helpful device, indeed. It works just fine as long as you keep an eye on it and keep track of the consumption. Truth is, the Megawatts / hour rate is not helping lately..
On the box: HIGH RESOLUTION GRAPHICS POSSIBLE. Like the ZX81 only the in the ROM graphics were possible> When on the ZX81 pseudo hires and true hires was discovered it did not work on a Lambda due to altered hardware. May 2024: I built a brand new displaymethod for the ZX81 based on the normal characterdisplay> This method also works on a Lambda 8300, so for the first time you can add some kind of extended graphics on the Lambda 8300. ruclips.net/video/LKvyVmcUriw/видео.html
Your voice kill my eurs
May I ask on how to fix any audio delay/lag? Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the knowledge! This fixed the noisy disc drive on my PS2 slim. I want to add that it is not just the sheer downward pressure that will silence the drive but rather finding the sweet spot. I initially bent it too much and that actually made it worse. Then I bent it back and forth several times (and tested after each change) until I found that sweet spot. So if you try this fix, be patient and don´t give up if it doesn´t solve the problem on the first try.
Awesome 😮!!
Thank you so much finally ❤
Nice donation to your channel, thanks for sharing ;)
Hello Peter! Thank you for watching my friend! Cheers!
When I tore mine apart I used kapton tape to keep it adhered down
Hi there! Kapton tape is even better because it is temperature resistant and full anti-static features! Good on you mate! Thank you so much for watching!
I have first generation with 4 adjustable resistors on the side. It can “read” the soundtrack of a game but not the application. What should I look for?
Hello Pedro! It seems you have a very nice version of the console! I never had the chance to get my hands on one of those but i looked around for some info and so, here it is: db.hfsplay.fr/files/2019/09/18/saturneu_2SyPH12.pdf Not sure where is the actual info, but it always comes handy to have the service manual around... Then, i saw this: www.retrosix.wiki/laser-tuning-sega-saturn It LOOKS like, you have to deal with R114 and play around in small increments I wouldn't touch the R104, as the writer suggests though... I really hope this helps, let us know if you made it after all - Do not forget, there is an alignment resistor on the side of the laser pack (yellow). In my case, music only could be played as welll. ... Many thanks for watching!!....
@CyberhugTechnologies could you please explain exactly what you did? It is not really clear for me. I'm sorry for asking. You used double sided tape as I understood from another comment, right? But you taped it between the upper and lower ribbon cable, right? And you taped the lower one against the metal when the laser is in its maximum position at the motor, right? So why double sided tape when only one side is used? Could you please help me? Thank you bro
Hi Ben! you got it almost right, the goal is to have the ribbon stable on the metal underneath - I used double sided tape to hold it lower than the surface of the upper part of the cover so that it wouldn't be scratched anymore. The idea is to get it to the maximum length indeed because the laser goes up and down and it is not right to have it tight. Thank you so so much for watching! Please, let me know you did it after all.!
I have a laser 310.
So So great childhood memories! <3
Hey, thanks gonna try this out, I got a lot of 3 Plus/4's that I've been fixing and one of them did get a lifted ribbon connector like this. Didn't know what I was gonna do.
My PS2 from the UK looks NOTHING like the two used in this video 🤣 im sat here with mine in a million parts lol
dude i don't know why but after some attempts of calibration my tester is not reading DVD resistance, only CD, did i damaged DVD potentiometer contacts or what? Anyways i think that i can calibrate it without measuring it, just checking the position of the screw... Anyways it isn't that important because i bought some fortuna freemcboot memory cards with mx4sio for my ps2 slim, but damn i need that laser working because of nostalgia, lol.
Thank you for this! Amazing workaround until the charger is delivered! Many thanks!
Dont do this, ds lite chargers are like 5 bucks off amazon
My DVD laser works now at 1,045! Thank you!
Another console saved ....and this is my reward mate! Thank you for watching! Glad you saved it ! 🙂
One of the most concise videos i have seen for this particular model man! Great content as always! Many thanks and thumbs up again!
Thanks mate! I appreciate your dedication to this channel!
Thank you so much for this video. First one I found with the same laser as mine, I could not find any information as to which adjustment screw was for CD and which was for DVD.
You're so very welcome Anthony! Your words are my best reward as I'm trying to keep all of these wonderful consoles alive! thank you for watching and cheers!
Thanks my ps2 slim works perfectly now!
What's the github of the board?
Hi there, it was in the description - Please, check : github.com/brendanalford/zx-diagnostics/wiki/Firmware
@@CyberhugTechnologies That's the github of the ROM, not the board (PCB).
@@peddersoldchap Yep, i see - Try the link: github.com/konkotgit/ZX-external-ROM The gerbers can be found there and the design can support up to 4x images on the eprom. Thanks for watching!
thank you so much for this video!! I got my own recently and it was running with a couple issues and I would of had no idea how to fix it without your video!!!
Hey there! I am so, so glad you made it right! Another retro device is saved! Your words are my reward! Cheers and thank you for watching!
@@CyberhugTechnologies Hello, shouldn't it turn off on its own after the tape is finished? I have to press stop
@@edege540 Hi there and thank you for watching! Yes, there is a white little plastic thing which is loosely carried away along with the tape (any direction) and when the tape stops, this stops and a little spring brings the play button up. If this little plastic is damaged or the little spring is lost then the stop process cannot be initiated.
I played this game so much :D
Hey Scott! Glad it brought back memories mate! Thank you so much for watching!
I thought the game would be on PC (dos)
It is an RGB or Composite signal input so, I tried the monitor with SEGA - thank you for watching!
very well made video. Beautiful machine
Thank you so much for watching Knight! It is indeed a wonderful machine! Cheers!
I built one of these from the kit. Like other home computers, they were hard to get hold of, and we had to harangue them to get them to dispatch. It would have worked first time had my brother not told me to plug the 2k of RAM (4 chips) into the wrong sockets. The picture was very poor, and eventually they told us that in some kits they had mistakenly supplied PNP instead of NPN transistors for the video amplifier; when replaced, it fixed the problem. I tried doubling the clock speed to 2MHz and it worked fine, but the 300 baud cassette interface became 600 baud and was not really workable without using a reel to reel recorder.
Hi Matthew! I am so glad it brought back memories! Thank you so so much for watching and for stopping by!

Hey Fixer, thanks for dropping in! Sounds like you did a great job with that cable already! Smell comes over the years when humidity and dust go hand in hand 😀I know how it is ! Thank you for watching and keep it up with saving retro gems!
Is the cinematic scene slow or fast?
Hi there! This is probably the most interesting question! Well, it depends on the game, if it is demanding, but mostly depends on the HDD itself. For example, i have experienced slow motion at some point when playing with the model that uses an IDE HDD - while at the same time, using a SATA HDD instead, the experience gets far better! If the game pushes the hardware to the limits though, there are not many things to do! thank you for dropping by and for the key-question!

Mine has the grinding issue please tell me how do I fix it
Hi Zak! As the first step please, check my other video for grinding noise and i hope it will help! ruclips.net/video/HQqL4akKd9I/видео.html thanks for watching!
@@CyberhugTechnologies nope still nothing
How do you get the laser in the down position to check to see if the ribbon cable is okay? The laser is always in the up position whenever I turn the console off.
Hi and thanks for dropping in! That is a good question..! So, you do it gently by hand. Please, do not force it, you really do not have to. Many thanks for watching!
@CyberhugTechnologies Thank you for the response. It turns out moving the laser wasn't as fragile or as difficult as I initially thought. Now I can see my ribbon cable is perfectly fine and I don't have to worry for the time being. Thank you so much.
Can this happen through wear and tear
Hi and thanks for dropping in! The shape of this hinge is round and quite short in order not to break easily so, only by force it can be broken - I think wear and tear is not a possible damage, only mishap by force can break it.
What type do you recommend I use?
Hi and thanks for dropping in! I have used a very thin tape, the office kind of tape because i wanted this to be extra thin under the ribbon. You can use any type of double sided tape as long as it is very thin - strong is not important.
Factory ROM is a mask ROM, they don't get erased, but they do go bad. They can go bad in such a way that all the data pins constantly show HIGH, which in turn will be read as FF by your programmer. That's my theory on your mystery.
Hi and many thanks for dropping in - also for the valuable info shared here! That was my first impression from the beginning and you're absolutely correct! for some reason, when this happens i feel better when an eprom gets in place. Thanks for watching!
