'Cherish the Past, Adorn the Present, Create for the Future'
The Faversham Society has been working since 1962 to conserve the best of Faversham’s heritage to ensure that it is there for our children and their children’s children to enjoy. Our town has a rich vernacular architecture herniate and a vibrant community. Close to 1000 like-minded individuals have come together to research and interpret our buildings and streetscapes to enable people, residents and visitors alike, to appreciate what we have and when it is threatened to campaign to preserve it.
We do this through our publications and heritage collections displayed in the Fleur Museum, a collection of listed buildings. We organise regular town walks guided by knowledgeable local historians, and each year host and take part in events enabling residents and visitors to learn more about our heritage. In the winter months there are regular talks about aspects of Faversham's history, environment and natural history.

The nautical history of our sailor ancestors!
I notice quite a few omissions 🤔
I have information for you about Hollow shore the slight hill to the North of the creek entrance. If you drive to OARE Marshes via the 3 Mariners you drive through a quick right and left of a turn in the road towards the coastguard cottages at the summit of the hill. It is my understanding that this the West-East entrance to a Roman fort with commanding position over entrance to the east Swale. That could ride to "Syndale" on the A2 within the hour of spotting the enemy. Moreover There reason the fort was there was because of the ford that still exists across the Swale. At minimum low tide there is a 20 cm deep causeway that you could run 500 head of beef across in one hour at Hartyferry.. Never tried it,, however I do know there is hard core right under the center of the swale at this point. Having walked as far as I could without equipment.

My Grandad Alf was probably the last living person to have worked there. My father and I took him to see it in 2005 and he kind of remembered bits of it and enjoyed seeing it again. Sadly Grandad died the year after.

1961 went to ethelbert road secondery school spent every dinner time at the creek it was good and wide then.
My 3rd great-grandfather was born in Faversham but emigrated to the US in 1862. I enjoyed the information about Faversham history since I knew nothing about it other than my grandfather worked in the oyster beds before emigrating and becoming a farmer in Ohio. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit in person some day. It looks lovely :)

My Great Uncle Harry Pilcher was one of those killed in the 1916 explosion. He’s not buried in the plot in the cemetery, but is one of those named on the adjacent memorial stone as being ‘buried elsewhere’. I wonder if that was a euphemism for ‘we know he was killed but we couldn’t find any identifiable parts’.
I remember being told that my great grandfather worked here and he was wounded during the explosion in 1916.

A piece of advice, keep away from it. Your ancestor did the right thing, he travelled 4000 miles to escape from it. I wasn't quite so adventurous, I only travelled 127 miles, to get away from it.
