    Back in the late 90's I worked as an electronics service tech for Sears. I was the only one in the shop allowed to do component-level repairs on DVD players (remember when DVD players were valuable enough to repair?) because I was trained by Sony back in the 80's on how to solder surface-mount stuff. Now I only work on vintage audio, where there is essentially none of it. Which is a good thing, as my eyes are not what they were.

    • @the6r
      @the6r Месяц назад

      "Troubleshooting to the component level" - is a lost art. The state of the art is. . . . we're a "throwaway society". It's too easy to toss the whole device in favor of new - or worse - the upgraded version. Landfills speak for themselves. I'm encouraged to see rekindled interest in "dated" technology. Not just for the history, but for the love of - if not appreciation for what was. Troubleshooting SMTs, repairing SMTs IS the modern form of the old art. In fact, when working on point-to-point tech, those skills can atrophy; which is why I practice building wire sculptures, with no pattern, just from imagination. Soldering is the original form of Aroma Therapy.

    Was this for recording studios, broadcasters, etc? Fabolous unit, looks like it costed like a car. I remember buying reissued years of "Audio" Magazine from the 50/60:s. Those who built their Williamsson amps, horn speakers, etc. mostly seemed to have used master tapes as source. On machines like this, i suppose.

      Greetings, this is Tim. Thanx so much for the comeback... This machine was marketed primarily for the early generation of audiophiles. Y'know, folks that had a passion for HiFi and the $$ to make it happen. Broadcast facilities - those with a budget for such things - would spend far more for workhorse equipment, like AMPEX, Magnecorders, CROWN etc. One giveaway is that these decks sold without cabinetry. Back in the day, a lot of HiFi gear was meant to be built-in to furniture - credenzas, side tables and the like. In my experience, radio stations might use gear like this to save a few bucks, but they were still at the mercy of 'other' facilities that would send them copies of commercials that were incompatible with their "pro-sumer" gear. I remember a station I worked at (in the 70s) that purchased a couple of tape decks that were high-end, but hopelessly consumer-grade; ( I have one example in my museum: an ASTROCOM/MARLUX). Their engineer spent all weekend realigning the heads (brand new machine) to make it 'possible' (if not compatible) to play tapes from other facilities. -tim

      Greetings, braaaave soul..! Growing up we didn't have the budget for such things. I relied on folks' who were tossing out clock radios, TVs, phonographs, etc. My very first tape recorder was a rescue from a neighbors trash... a Voice of Music model 720, circa 1969. They tossed it because "...it needed work". I kept that thing alive for years. VM has been my hearts' desire since then.

      Things to be mindful of... SONY grease..! SONY grease turns to "glue" after only a few years. All moving parts, rollers, capstan, idlers, mechanism(s), you name it, have SONY grease that MUST be removed. New grease (or in some cases light weight oil must be applied). When it comes to oiling spinning parts, I use teflon lube. Teflon wasn't available 'back then', or I'm sure SONY would've used it instead. The whole point is to breathe new life into every machine, deck, and appliance (amplifiers, processors, etc.) to keep them alive and kicking for as long as possible. Wait till you see what we've done to re-purpose this machine in our "Alter of Entertainment" Thank you for the kind words..! and Be Well.

      Greetings, been there, done that..! I was a contract engineer for RetroTV (you might have heard of them) and their various other network channels. The owner would purchase pallets of 15 - 20 decks, and my job was to "frankenstein" them to keep their ingest suites up and running. The bulk of TV programs were archived on Beta. RetroTV is/was a satellite delivered service for TV stations nationwide that were hungry for content for their ancillary channels after the switch to digital broadcasting. Suggestion: as you dive into a deck to retrieve some part(s), inventory [verb] parts removed in the process, you'll thank yourself later for the extra effort. I loathe doing a 'thing' twice. When I was in high school (1973 to 1977) we had one of this exact model, along with a portable that used 5" reels. Someone said that it could record in color with "color tape", but we never had that so we couldn't confirm it. I did manage to prove that the portable would pass a color signal from video in to video out, so maybe... The one camera on hand had a spot burned in the vidicon, and later it got another. As one of the A/V guys, I was able to play with the equipment a little. It was fun while it lasted.

    • @TimothyColvard
      @TimothyColvard 5 месяцев назад

      Greetings... you and I were high 'schooled' at the same time. The EIAJ format was capable of color by the mid-to-late 70s. Color video required an out-board module to process the chroma signal. Truth be told , the module wasn't that expensive (even in 1970 dollars), the expense was in color TVs to view the recovered video. A working black & white television was considered "good enough" to view whatever content was presented. Also, you may have given me an idea about video camera restoration. . . Vidicon cameras were highly prone to 'burn-in', but there is remedy to "erasing" the damage... [tease]. No worries... I'll give you credit for the inspiration when I touch on the issue. Be Well.

    The lines of resolution spec is separate and different from horizontal scan lines, but you've conflated the two at the end. Lines of resolution is usually defined as the number of alternating black and white vertical lines that can be in a picture and come through distinctly. A multi-burst test pattern contains groups of progressively smaller alternating black and white stripes and is used to measure video response. A standard NTSC DVD can record 360 lines resolution. NTSC VCRs were capable of between ~200 for low spec VHS decks to north of 400 for things like ED-Betamax,1" type C broadcast decks, etc. The line count was basically a practical measure of analog video bandwidth and it's effect on video quality.

    • @the6r
      @the6r 5 месяцев назад

      Greetings and thank you for the comeback... the resolution spec is provided by SONY in the Operation Manual - as "capable of 300 lines of resolution" refers to the number of 'lines' from the top of the raster to the bottom of the raster; including the vertical interval, typically not visible on 'overscan' monitors. The instantaneous picture consists of the number of lines preceded by a sync pulse. A FIELD of video in the NTSC domain consists of 262.5 lines from the scanning motion of one rotary head, immediately followed by the second head reproducing another (different) FIELD of video. Those two FIELDs (interlaced) combine to produce a frame of video, 30 times per second. The rotary head (and its' associated electronics) has bandwidth capable of 300 lines, before frequency roll-off causes deterioration of the picture quality. Since NTSC (black & white) video only contains 262.5 lines per field at any given time, the bandwidth limitations are unrealized. "Multi-burst" describes the increasingly narrow (left to right) vertical lines that challenge the electronics to perform at fixed, increased, frequencies. A video recorder's bandwidth limitations will be revealed by multi-burst as the rotary heads, pre-amplifiers, and output amplifiers attempt to reproduce those frequencies. In fact, video recording and playback specifications - in the industry - improved over time despite the fact that broadcast television specifications remained virtually unchanged for decades. Production houses could produce in higher resolution (quality) but when it came to duplication for broadcast television, it was necessary to "scale", "compress", and otherwise "dumb down" the quality. Been There, Done That. The line count was established long before anyone considered trying to make it better. At that time they were glad it worked at all. Our next episode involving the '3650' will speak to it's bandwidth capabilities (and limitations) and utilizing the available bandwidth to take the deck to the next level. Thanx again and Be Well.

      Thank you for the feedback! We'd love to have you share this channel with everyone you know would like this sort of thing! RUclips makes it very tough to get out there these days. Any help is appreciated!

    I didn't even KNOW it had a slo-mo mode!

      @TimothyColvard 5 месяцев назад

      I knew it did. . . but once the faceplate was removed, I couldn't tell which knob did what. Removing the 'Slo-Mo' knob pulled the shaft up (into slo-mo mode), and when I moved to play mode. . . tape speed was incredibly sloooow. I thought I boogered something..! My heart was in my throat. My "relief" (clearly visible in the raw footage), was as genuine a moment as I can recall..... ask any of my ex-wives ;)

    Very cool video! But RUclips has not finished processing the video, and so it's only showing in 360p - about VHS quality. Try scheduling your videos to appear a few hours after your upload, to give time for RUclips to do their re-encoding thing.

      I completely agree. I gave it about 3 hours to render but it's still not done surprisingly. Must be due to the duration of this video in particular. Hopefully it clears up soon.

    I like the channel, thanks. However I, don't like background music on talk focussed tech stuff. It muddies the voice if your hearing isn't great, and I like to practice my guitar while watching youtube, which is unpleasant to the ear if there's already music in a different key 😭

      Can guitar practice and technical information digestion ever go hand in hand 🤔

    • @rogerheathcote3062
      @rogerheathcote3062 7 месяцев назад

      @@stephencarlsten2329 Yeah I'm not sure it's for everyone, and all types of practice. Personally I have ADHD so I find it very difficult to concentrate on stuff that just needs lots of reps to build muscle memory. Stuff like finger picking patterns, ap scale sequences etc. For those kind of things I like to set the tempo so low I can't mess up and then watch some low effort you tube to keep my mind distracted while my body goes to school, ratcheting up the tempo occassionally. For that stuff I love these kind of dad in a shed vids. They are often delivering technical info, but nice and slow, and nothing that requires intense concentration. I appreciate mine is a very niche use case though!

    1:48 BTW, the reason it has a push-pull output stage is probably the fact that a class-AB push-pull output stage uses a lot less current on average than a class-A single-ended output stage of equivalent power, and that makes the batteries last longer. And,, as an added bonus, the output transformer can be smaller and cheaper.

      We also discovered (in part 2) that it's actually the record circuit! That's the section that helps record something to the tape. Pretty nifty little box, this Rim drive deck.

      It's an electrical engineering joke. A component not having a tolerance spec isn't stricto-sensu intolerant, but considering how few things your average capacitor tolerates, the term fits for different reasons.

    • @ScottGrammer
      @ScottGrammer 7 месяцев назад

      What he means is that electrolytic capacitors (the kind he's talking about) cannot be made to precise tolerances without making them extremely expensive, and so for most of them, the value printed on them is a sort of "close enough" value. As long as the real capacitance is within about +/- 50% of what's printed on it, you're doing well. This does not apply to other kinds of capacitors, like film caps, ceramic caps, etc.

      Quite correct. I should've been more succinct. This segment was lifted from the larger episode. It wasn't shot to be a 'short'. It was clipped out to showcase my opinion(s), comic relief and my character delivery. And THIS is why we solicit comments and feedback. It is appreciated.
