My friends and I grew up in the middle of all this. There were so many small scenes. Apart from what Luch, Easy Money /Goldfinger, Roger, Sylvie, etc, were doing for us, we had to make our own fun to fill the void. People were hungry, it drove creativity. TV only had 3 or 4 channels, and either there was something interesting on or not, if you were lucky it was an episode of Chances. Anyway, this video touches on another thing that has changed, and why this is pure nostalgia now and you can't find this energy anymore, we had time and space, Canberra was relatively cheap to live in back then, even in Sydney you could rent cheap left over space in the city. All that was fertile soil for an interesting arts scene and unique small town culture. I took it for granted back then but since the world has become a giant Westfield mall, I really miss it, and all these people. There's really no way to convey what it was like.

So you complain you were taken advantage of yet you sell your body for money.

This is a small selective history of local doofing. Not of electronic music. For those interested in the history, The Canberra School of Music commissioned the first ever all digital synthesizer !!! using a pair of newly available 6800 chips, that evolved into the development of the first sampler, the birth of digital audio. Technology that has now impacted every human on earth. (See Peter Volgel, Kym Ryrie, Fairlight CMI,Tony Furse). It's ironic the early criticism of digital audio being cold, clinical and angular could have also been a description of the School of Music's actual building . Before that, the giant wall mounted pen plotter (likely the only one in the country at the time) in the basement floor of the ANU mainframe computer building was being programmed to tap musical rhythms with the old dried pen tips, as the sound was different on different regions of the board. I remember it vividly. Also the birth of speech synthesis was in Canberra. (See Michael Wagner) Long before Ray Kurzweil. The first words spoken by a machine were 'Sour Fish' but it sounded like 'Our Ish'. Lest we stand on the shoulders of the great pioneers.

A piece on electronic music history in Canberra, and no mention of the Stromlo forest parties, or Panopticons or The Oneoscillator Technotribe (or the worlds first multi room midi sync up ) or Clan Analogue or The Circus. Pity. I guess it does say scratching the surface.

Awesome! So many great memories in there. Kinda surprised Chris didn't mention the legendary Twisted raves at UC and ANU - they were mental, such great parties. I dearly miss those days...

Posting this before I've even watched it, but the electronica scene in Canberra from the late '90s to the 2010s was SPECIAL. Incredible DJs, great promoters, and a truly communal scene. Met so many wonderful people, some of whom are still friends today. Raving and reviewing for BMA from 2000-2003 was the best fun I ever had in my life! Now, on to the watching.

RIP Silvie. An absolute angel and pillar of support even after Toast (which I never had the chance to visit). I used to host a show on 2XXfm around 2010 and she would call up weekly sending love and praises. Still remember it fondly. Look forward to seeing this series scratch further into other forms of electronic music that happened in Canberra outside of dance music. Off the top of my head Sia and hellosQuare Recordings, (touched on briefly, but tbh need more), California Girls, Crossroads, Lacklustre, Reuben Ingall, Subsequence Radio, the Art School Ball and the Art School in general, Box Cutter, Dream Damage, Horse MacGyver, Sound Out, The Bowl. It's a transient place, but plenty of amazing times and moments. Shout out CBR

Oh Sweat dripping from the ceiling in the tiny back room where they played the deepest beats and all you could see was lasers and shadows, dancing for hours in the dark, and emerging to watch a midnight show, maybe win a cd, play some pool, get chips n gravy at chicken gourmet... back in to the club for another round , and come out when the sun came up....

So many memories from the Canberra dance a d live music scene in the 90's... I lived at Heavon, Gypsy, the asylum, terminus, and Tully's was a great live music venue as well. Thanks for the photos and the film...I was too busy being in it to take photos xx
