Thanks for this history! My Great Grandfather worked for the Calvins and spent a lot of time on the island. He was captain of some of their sailing ships, the last one being the S.S. Dunn. He was known as Captain James Dix. His brother was a sailmaker on the island.

I am trying to reach Bill Calvin. My Great grandfather Capt. James Dix was born on the Island and sailed the great lakes from the 1870s to 1910. He was also involved with building a sail loft on the island. In fact the Dix is on the sail on one of the rafts.. We were early marketers.. lol. My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Hickey was born on the island and her father was an expert on log rafts. The Hickeys were Irish from the Saguenay River in Quebec area and worked with the Lumber Kings in the mid 1800s running log rafts there before. They were experts in log rafts. James, my name is Randy Menard. The credits at the museum claim the young fellow seen in some of the photos in this video was Ira Menard, my Grandfather. His father, my Great Grandfather was Raft Foreman George Menard, tragically lost in a collision. Here's the news report of the sinking. images.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/79612/data
