Seed Saving in a Time of Change
Просмотров 5925 месяцев назад
Do you rely on getting seeds or starts from a nursery? Are the seeds you are planting adapting to our changing climate and to your preferences? Learn the ancient practice of saving seeds. Over 94% of the seed commercially available 100 years ago is gone. The loss of genetic diversity and the current model of breeding for uniformity makes our food system much more susceptible to shocks from pest...

This terrific. But 21 is listed as onions and parsley. How do we print parsley? TIA
For the native seeds part, what does the germ code mean??
Sound like Joseph is starting his food forest for the same reason I am
Found this topic just a couple of days ago through an interview with David the Good here on youtube and I find this topic so new and fascinating that I deeply dive into it. And I wonder: There’s NO ONE talking about breeding landraces on youtube here in Germany, Austria, Switzerland. 😮 So, thank you for these amazing insights! ❤
For those people that don't know: Poison Hemlock looks a lot like a wild carrot (Queen Anne's Lace)... And if poison hemlock were to cross pollinate with your carrots, it could be deadly... Poison Hemlock can kill you within a couple of hours.
Is it possible to get links to the images, resources, or slides to see better?
Good morning. I am DePhane founder of the Free Plant N Garden Stands Org. We are excited to watch this as we just started designing a seed card for our bulk seeds. Our Seed Shepherds have been using origami seed packets, but having a label with information will be helpful for the person receiving.
Fabulous thank you!
Happy to see that Barbara Spencer spoke to you, Elizabeth. I know her and she spoke at some of my events in LA.
Where can I find this resource, the wrapper information sheet? Thanks

Great resource for learning how to start a seed library.
This is really amazing. I live in Spokane and I have a lot of heirloom squash seeds. They are really well adapted to wa. State
Is there a PO box that I can send some Hopi seeds to? I would love to share them!
Baker Creek is amazing. I got some Hopi turquoise corn. It did extremely well, really beautiful. I gave away thousands of seeds at the fair this year. 🌞
Love the pictures, keep em' coming. If you encounter young folk who take issue with the word landrace, the new word is Adaption Gardening. Or for farms Adaption Agriculture.
Right! We did our project before the discussion about terminology.
some beans can also be toxic even within cultivated species. dont grow kidney beans and similar very cool seeing the slutty tomato flowers 😅 i can see an ornamental appeal too!
Wont boiling remove toxins?
@@jackholman5008 yes but how do you know if your new offspring is toxic or not raw? you could boil all of them but then you miss out on yummy raw bean pods
Oh wow, that sucks
If you eat just five raw kidney beans, it will coagulate your blood and kill you...
I've been listening to Joseph talk about his plants for at least a few seasons. My climate is generally wet and the ground is acidic(coastal Maine) Last year I grew 7 hybrid sweet corn varieties in a block and didn't produce enough to eat and save seed. We were in drought most of that summer. This year I grew the f2 seed from the few that did ok last year. This year was very wet and had few sunny days. We've been eating corn several times a week, fed the chickens the poor quality ears daily for weeks and I have plenty of seed for next year! Between 2 adverse and opposite seasons and next year being the magic 3rd year I'm very excited for next season. This was a great talk to listen to while putting up seeds! Thank you
White privilege is a myth.
18:31 Capitalism has done more to save genetic diversity than communism or socialism ever will.
Your method is ahead of its time!
More like it's returning to the way it's supposed to be. Corporations have really decreased the genetic diversity of our food supply
I have now ordered seeds and made a donation for squash corn and watermelon seeds interested to see where it takes me. Love Joseph’s work.
Thank you so much ❤🌱🏵️🌿🧑🏻🌾🌿🌱🤠👍🏻💕🏵️
Great presentation, thank you! Question: is there a way to pre-write and schedule emails to automatically go out? Thanks for this great information. Kay, I love how organized you are! Rebecca, thanks for your vision.
Is it possible to send me a resource packet?
If you go to SeedLibraries.net, we have tons of resources on how to start a seed library. On our home page, we have the links to the Seed Library Summit presentations and their resources.
@SeedLibraries Thanks So much!
Does anyone have those book resources?
Can you be specific? Which book are you asking about?
@@RichmondGrows it was mentioned toward the end. Some sort of book resource list?
This was one of the most delightful conversations I have had the pleasure of eavesdropping on. I just heard about goingtoseed, and I'm deeply honored to be a part of its inception, and hopefully contribute more seeds in time.
How do you get started in this kind of industry?
Thanks for explaining how the EFN works. I'll join one of those lovely projects.

At first I thought the title was Ask a Seed Libertarian. I’m a Libertarian who loves to Garden so I was excited to find other like minded gardeners.
Tried to order seeds and donate but they don’t take Discover or Paypal.
try again this year 👍
Thank you for hosting the virtual conference. I learned a lot of useful information...
We're glad you enjoyed the conference. It was our pleasure to offer it to the community.
this is fascinating - thank you so much!
Thank you for this information. Our master gardener group has started a seed library with the public library last year starting with fall seeds. It’s been a challenge. This month I did a class on reading the seed packet and germination requirements. Hopefully we can continue to do more.

I have found that you can grow just about anything in Indiana.
What a fantastic idea! Thank you.

Thank you for your wonderful work!
