This channel was created to provide an outlet for auto racing history videos. I've given several presentations on the topic. They are given then gone. So we began recording them and placed them online.
Retro Racing Reports is the latest iteration for preserving auto racing history. An old program is selected, the feature story is read and its pages presented. No additional commentary is needed.
More auto racing has taken place in Southern California than any other place in the world. I discovered this fact while researching my graduate thesis in college. What I also discovered was a passion for the history of Los Angeles and its ties to the coincidental development of the automobile.
Most of my time is spent actually doing things. thus my two websites are infrequently updated.

I'd much rather be in the wood shop than online. But if people keep showing up with cameras, I might as well share the experience with you.

Hanford Motor Speedway had several configurations. By 1969, the oval was promoted as 1.5 mile per lap and suitable for Indy car racing. The "California 200" ran 200 miles (as opposed to laps) thus creating an odd number for official laps to cover the required distance. Those were the days of my childhood.....
This is great! This is the night I was born. Keep up the good work. Jason York
Very nice. I have programs from 1981, 82, 83 and 1 from 86. I got married in Utah while in the Air Force and we did our honeymoon in California. Saugus was a must, and we made it in time to see the 4th of July race. Good times. The 81, 82 and 83 programs are from when I was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base.
Excellent! Race track memories last a long time.
Good stuff!
Really miss Saugus. To much greed and politics.
Welllll... I can repeat the story yet again or you can search for it. Cryptic, I know, but I'm not going down the road.
Thanks for the content!
You bet, happy to do my part.
In Hanford??? Amazing what used to be... Boo-hu-hu...
Oh yes. I don't know that those guys knew what kind of history they were writing, but what an exciting time to be racing!
I'm so glad that I was witness to those earliest days of PIR when the facility was little more that a ribbon of black asphalt in the desert of the Estrella Mountains. The postal address was listed as Cashun Arizona which does not even exist anymore. So much has changed but, to me, PIR will always be remembered as the south western home of Indy Car Racing (Both Roadsters and the "Rear engine" Funny Cars as they were originally known to the USAC Open Wheel Racing faithful.)
Yes! The aerial image is particularly fascinating as it shows the road circuit as well as the drag strip.
Hi Harold, I really have been enjoying your retro coverage of the west coast CRA and other sanctioning bodies hosting Sprint Car racing. These old programs with the trophy dash through the nightly Main Events with all competitors listed. It sure brings back a lot of great memories. I live in Tucson Az. and never missed a weekend of racing at the original Tucson Speedway under the sanctioning body TACRA. Every once in a while a trip north to Phoenix with the destination of 35th Avenue and Broadway which was the location of the famous Manzanita Speedway was always a big deal to me. The photos of the cageless, track nose Sprinters driven by my heroes of the day are nostalgic treasures. Thanks for all you do and I will keep watching. Cheers to you, Tim Ford.
CRA ran at Manzanita a couple times each season and I have a few Manzy Mags on the stack. They'll find their way into the mix. Three months in and I am still sorting!
I believe Mario won that race.
Yes indeed. It was this race where he used stagger to help in the corners-something no one else knew about at the time.
@@haroldosmer9803 Mario most likely became familiar with the "Stagger" concept from Clint Brawner's Dean Van Lines Champ Dirt Car setups while he was with that team in the 1960's.Which was Mario's introduction to USAC and the "Big Time." The Indy Cars of the 1950's through the 1970's was my favorite era of Open Wheel Racing as each car was a different interpretation of the builder's imagination on what he thought would be "The Perfect Race Car." I still watch modern Indy Car races but the spec series is not near as much fun as it was "Back in the Day!"
@@timford3599 The story I heard says he hit upon it while testing for Firestone. Rules state that any technical advantage discovered during testing had to be shared with the other teams. It was decided that this did not fall under the technical advantage clause until after the race. This is part of the fun with Retro Racing Reports, eh?
I love the one ad, West Covina Auto Parts. Open till midnight every night. You won't find that happening anywhere today.
Oh, I missed that one. But that's also part of why they are included. They help complete these time capsules!
Excellent, thanks. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you! So many treasures to be found!
What a magnificent field of drivers! That would have been something to see.
It was a more personal and accessible era.
Yep, Eddie Wirth won the 1985 CRA championship.
Thanks. I know I could have looked it up, but it's more fun to throw it out as a question.
This is the real deal…very welcome classic stuff!
Do you have the winston west race program from clovis or santa maria for 1972?
There are some Santa Maria's here on the stack though much of what I have is from Saugus and Ascot (CRA & Midgets).
Theres still a dirt track at hanford fairgrounds.Last race of the year is tomm. night.
Yes! Bring a friend or two.
Doesn't look like it, but this is hard-core!
The old programs reflect their times. You really catch the period vibe from the low-key approach taken. Imagine Legion Ascot Miller sprint cars going straight on the beach. Oh my...
I first went to PIR in 1975 to see the Indy cars race. I was 15 years-old and loved it. I would go there for every race after that for many years to come to include not just the two Indy car races but also the Copper World Classic and when NASCAR finally came there in the either late 70's or early 80's I was there as well. We always sat in section A. Unfortunately, the track has been rebuilt twice now and the start line has been moved as well. It's made for stock cars now and the drivers who set the early history of PIR are forgotten and the stock car drivers are the ones listed as the heroes who made PIR.
Yes. PIR is a terrific modern facility. As with anything, you must first be a fan of the show to enjoy yourself.
The night before this race, they ran Clovis speedway 1/2 mile dirt. I think Jack Mc Coy won.
I was there as well.
Race tracks make for lasting memories. The sensory experience stays with you!
Those were the days!
Absolutely. So many racing names, big and small. We had it good.
Hulse, Hurtibise, Foyt, Jones, McCluskey, and others. That's quite a roster. I assume that Devitt is Jack Devitt?
Era heavyweights, yes. Write-in entry was Jim Devitt.
@haroldosmer9803 Jim Devitt. Was there a Jack Devitt? Maybe a son in the 70s or am I misremembering?
@@sprintcarfan87 Not sure. Tim Kennedy shows Jim as a write-in. He may have miswritten it but he's pretty sharp. See the 2:32 mark in this (1963) video.
@haroldosmer9803 I actually looked it up. Jack drove with CRA in the mid to late 70s. He must have been Jim's son. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
I started flat track in the 500 class at Corona, then went to motocross and raced there when they had the 'big hill' off the far side. about 2 times a month I'd race there.
Nice! Some folks are unaware of the different types of racing that took place on our local tracks.
Jim was a great driver....🏁
Yessir! He was well liked and respected.
I lived in the area for years. I found it interesting to see the advertisers. Places I went to and knew many years after the speedway was gone. I especially liked the ad for the waste disposal business on Vermont. "Bring your waste to us!. Agajanian's is too far!' For those who don't know, the Agajianian family that ran the speedway also were in the trash disposal business. The stuff they picked up that was food they fed to pigs and the money from that they used to go racing. They had a pig mascot on most of their cars.
Thank you! The ads are indeed part of these little time capsules.
The first dirt track my Dad took me to. . 1968..they had the oval and the motocross track and a BMX track later in the 70s with a big downhill start...Corona Raceway is at the beginning intros of the original Herbie The love Bug...
Such great memories!
Remember this sadly. To be followed not long after by "the other" tragedy for Dr. Caruthers....
All the cliches are true.
Sound like sabotage
Unlikely.
I miss Corona Raceway, lived in Corona for 20 years, great times on Saturday nights with the 1/4 mile dirt stockers!
Yes, we all have our favorites.
I liked the photo of Thompson and Kennedy.
Thanks! Did you notice Kennedy's number change? The caption calls it as Kennedy and #4, though it's the beginning of the season, so number changes were common.
@@haroldosmer9803 I didn't notice that.. I do remember thinking that his plain white car with the big hood was ugly compared to the other cars. I think Paul Sylvester also ran what my dad called a "shovel hood."
@@sprintcarfan87 I had trouble matching it up but then saw that Bob Meli was called out in his caption for a number change. First race of the season can get tricky for the fans!
Hello, I see You mentioned the racing programs from Carrell? I'm interested in a race car driver named Lou Figaro. He was a popular driver during 1940s 1950s. I appreciate it.
Reach out via email and we'll see what we can do to address your interest. program@hopublishing.com
Entirely too confusing.
Not sure where you got lost. Keep in mind that newspaper articles are meant to be read, not spoken. It's the same with every video in this series.
Thanks for posting this historical compilation of the track. For when I was a youngster 50+ years ago when driving past the track and seeing cars running and once when Indy cars did run on it and hearing them approximately 9 miles away. Amazing!
Happy to help out. Stirring the old memories is often a Good Thing!
I know I'm very biased, but Dad was one of the best drivers at Ascot in a stock car. He often said that Ascot was his favorite track. But NOBODY was better at Ascot than Parnelli Jones, no matter what kind of car he drove. 😉
The record does not show your dad at the 100 lap event but he did make a qualifying effort for the 300 lapper. In very tiny writing, notes say he spun in turn 3, hit the wall, blew out the right rear tire, and split his gas tank. Nonetheless, Eddie Gray was among the best stock car drivers of his day.
Thanks for posting this Harold. I sent you a couple articles from Dad's scrapbook from that 1959 race at Sacramento on Facebook Messenger. 🥰 By the way, up until 1962 any Pacific Coast late model race of 100 mi or more was considered a Grand national race.
Thank you.
The stock cars that raced the Sacramento mile dirt in those days were the Pacific Coast Late Models which became Winston West, now ARCA West.
Info given to me by Bill France Jr
Hi Harold; the stock cars that ran at Sacramento fair grounds in those days were the Pacific Coast Late Models which became Winston West, now ARCA West.
It would have been very time consuming to get Southern teams out west during the 1950s.
Missing is Louis Unser who also raced there.
He'd have been 69 years old by the time this race went off.
@@haroldosmer9803 Hi Harold. Hope you are well. I was going to school in L.A. at the time. I was talking about the younger Louis J. Unser who was Jerry, Bobby & Al's brother. I wasn't talking of old Louis who was their uncle and still racing Pikes Peak in his '70s. Most of the times brother Louis was building cars and engines in the L.A. area. When he did drive he may have been fastest of them all. He did win CRA mains as well as Pikes Peak in both open-wheel and stock car classes. I was on the Peak in 1964 when he was driving for Bill Stroppe as team mate to Parnell Jones in identical Mercuries. We were watching from Devils Playground, the highest spot on Pikes Peak and it was clearly evident he was blowing everyone's doors off. About a mile after he passed our visibility he went to downshift and his foot wouldn't come off the floor. He was lucky to survive the horrendous crash that ensued. However, that's when they discovered the MS that ended his driving career.
@@joestephan1111 Figured as much. I can only show what's in the program. One of the toughest parts of making these videos comes when I want to put in more pictures, tell more story, or just add to the game. But I've decided to just let these things fly on their own.
Thanks, enjoy your videos
Happy to help out. The stack is large. We'll see what comes up next.
I beieve the year Howerton won Foyt blew an engine in qualifying. Held up program so foyt could get a replacement. Do you think they would of held up for Howerton?
True, there is value in a solid reputation. I'm happy to have you watching, but you commented on the wrong video. Yours was meant to go on the Hoosier Hundred. I don't think Howerton or even Foyt ever ran at Saugus.
I used to have a box full of programs from Ascot, mostly from the 70s. I think my dad tossed them many years ago. I wish that I could look at them again. My dad bought your book at Perris years ago, and it was among the books I kept when he passed away in 2014. I still read the book occasionally.
Ah yes. This explains why/how Retro Racing Reports came into being.
I lived less then 5-6 miles from the track, wed ride are bikes down to the track every weekend,i still live in s- tee,the tracks long gona ,ill allways have those memories🙏
Thank you. It was not a random closure, the 50-year lease was up and so it goes. Still, [we] lost a great local venue.
My dad won his first of 3 NASCAR West Coast 100 mile races there at Sacramento just a month before in September of 1959. All the greatest race drivers in the country raced at the Sacramento mile at one time or another. Love all these videos that you post of drivers and races from the past. 🥰
As horse tracks first, fairground miles were flat and tough for race cars, especially stock cars. Big Cars, Silver Crown, and Sprints can broadslide a little easier.
Was surprised Doug Forts "Santa Maria Speedway" 1/3 clay track was not on the '65 CRA schedule that popped up in this post. I know that the CRA opened his Speedway in '64 and are still racing there in '24 as I've been attending CRA shows there starting 1976 😮😅😊. Maybe Doug had not perfected his track prep 😵💫 and it was a heavy/ rough surface that produced a serious risk of life and limb 🥹🥴🫡. Anyway, enjoy these Retro Reports my friend. Thank you for your time. Indeed I've subbed and always hit the like even if they are not open wheel stories 🏆👍🍻
Thank you. There are many surprises in these old programs!
Must have been 77, first time Phillips and Wallace came out west......was awesome , still miss Saugus !!!
Race action was very close to the fans at Saugus!
I was most likely there, dad never missed the B speedway....home track.
The strength of any local track is fans like your dad.
Ivan was the best fabricator/driver i ever knew. The only other person that i knew that could build a car as good as any fabricator and get to the track and drive as good as any driver was Ron Hornaday jr.
Yes, Ivan Baldwin was very good at what he did. I wonder, did they call his approach "old school" back then? We would today!
@@haroldosmer9803Maybe. I do know that in the 80s i had a old Winston west car 112" he built, over the telephone he gave me the set up for Stockton 99 speedway. My first time there and we did very well with very few adjustments.
My dad drove a 1958 ford race car at orange show in1972 his number was 545 it was a lot of fun
