Limerick City and County Council, who now manage the Greenway, plan an 800m diversion onto farmland and to abandon the existing route along the State owned old railway at Coolybrown, Ardagh, County Limerick, Ireland so as to give sole use of the old railway in that location to a private individual. The story of the development of the Great Southern Trail; a Greenway from Rathkeale in West Limerick to the North Kerry border.
Fascinating! Having cycled the greenway today I was interested in seeing old footage of the train tackling the climb into Barnagh! Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words
Hilarious how CIE employees are delighted and smiling congradulation themselves on another railway closed.
Evidence of a fantastic 'can do' community effort.
Beautiful. Thanks u
It’s all new now
Rubbish
Dedication and Determination of the Great Southern Greenway group has to be admired. Through many lows, and few highs they pushed on with this project and as a result of this , we have one of the finest Greenways in Europe. Thanks for yer unrelenting efforts.
Li Dow, Thanks very much for your kind words. Liam
It was ashame when they removed the railway lines, but its now great the old routes are being bought back to life as in greenways.
Well done to all involved, a truly remarkable achievement!
Thank you for your vision and tenacity. Your efforts have not been in vain , we now reap the rewards!
Mary, Thanks for your kind words which my colleagues in the Great Southern Trail and I very much appreciate. Liam O'M.
Well done to all involved. It’s a great achievement.
Kevin, Thanks very much for your kind words. Liam O Mahony
@@liamomahony1779 I’ve cycled it the last two Sunday’s. Once on my recumbent trike which I put up a video on RUclips and the last Sunday on my recumbent bike. Both day I met and spoke to very nice people. The start of your greenway at Rathkeale look fantastic and is very inviting. I had the nicest milkshake I ever had when I finished. It will be great to see new business opening. I will be bringing a small group of cyclists in the near future. Once again Well Done. I hope that we get our Quiet Man Greenway sometime.
@@Paddystyx Thanks for your kind comments.
Great documentary.. Looking forward to getting down there and cycling it
Kev, thanks for your kind words.
The reopening of closed railway lines should happen to prevent 1) Car Accidents/Road Deaths, 2) Traffic Jams & 3) Pollution there should be 24 hour trains in summer & St. Stephen's Day too all over the island of Ireland North to South, East to West & Midlands too.
Part's of railway not greenway should be restored and reopened to trains to stop 1) Pollution, 2) Car Accidents/Road Deaths & 3) Pollution there should be 24 hour trains in summer time & St. Stephen's Day trains too.
This railway line should be reopened to stop 1) Pollution, 2) Car Accidents/Road Deaths & 3) Pollution there is need to get 24 hour trains in summer & St. Stephen's Day trains too.
Martin, It's a pity it was ever closed.
@@liamomahony1779 The government needs to look into it of course.
The commentary.. the music.. beautiful😥😥
Glad you enjoyed the video.
It makes sense not to leave this old railway line not to be abandoned. Obviously, land grabbers anonymous have objected, but if their privacy wasn't affected by the passing of trains, how might it be affected by walkers and cyclists. Congratulations to all involved ! Very interesting documentary.
I've travelled all 32 counties and I may say without doubt this is my absolute favourite stretch of road. I hope to travel it again, as soon as circumstances permit.
Thank you to all those involved in producing this very interesting historical documentary. I have just now found it online. My roots are here.
Noel, Delighted that it brings back memories to you.
Brilliant footage. Good luck with completing the project. It will be a wonderful resource for all.
Whats the name of the music track?
It souldn't need to divert around the farmyard at Coolybrown.
Why is the route of the Greenway being forced around the farmyard at Coolybrown? Isn't it true that the land is the property of CIE? So whatever is there needs to be moved or removed. Otherwise it sets a precedent - that just isn't fair to the general public who, through CIE, own the land.
Why is that a big deal? We got a nice fully paved route so what's there to complain about
@@Rogalo487 The big deal is that the land is owned by a public body for the use of the public and if not protected from 'entitled' individuals the opportunity to use the land as needed can be harmed, as in this case.
@@alannewman85 but we still got the path
@@Rogalo487 I believe you will see that it deviates quite a lot, where it really shouldn't have to. I look forward to cycling it nonetheless when the restrictions are lifted.
@@alannewman85 is that really a problem though? More bike path for us
Brilliant piece of filming, I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole journey, Thank you!
Super video. Im living in listowel. Hope one day the rail will work back agian . KME can help .

Noel Harnett, Rathkeale Well done to all involved what a fantastic facility we have now. On a personal level it brings back so many memories my father was stationed in Barnagh and Rathkeale and we lived in Barnagh up to the time it closed
I congratulate the great southern trail on all their achievements in the past 25 years, great work by a voluntary group. Hopefully it is the start of great things to come for this excellent greenway.
I really enjoyed watching this story. The railway line at Rathkeale was my playground as a young boy growing up in Rathkeale .I also remember getting the train from Ballingraine to Knock Shrine .
