Ruthven Barracks
Spot the bulwark against the Jacobites on a prominent mound visible for miles around.
Ruthven Barracks were built by George I’s government in the early 1700s after the failed Jacobite uprising of 1715. The troops stationed there were to maintain law and order and enforce the Disarming Act of 1716.
The barracks saw action twice. A 300-strong Jacobite attack failed to take the barracks in 1745, but a more heavily-armed attack the next year forced the barracks’ surrender. The Jacobites rallied here after their defeat at Culloden before conceding.

Unfortunately there is no Real Time Trains available in Germany so I don’t know where from or going to but an ex 290 engine rebuilt as 294 885-2 on a regional goods run.

I’d give my right tit for a seat in the cab. I grew up in Kyle when the proper diesel locos were still being used. I was a kid in the 80s and used to hang about the station waiting for them to come in from Inverness…..the smell and the noise of the 37s is something I’ll always love.

Wonderful views not spoiled by trees running wild like on the West Highland line. Although Scot Rail could be given some chivviing to get on with some pruning before nature takes over completely as on the WHL. Lovely video. Thanks. Rmb

The Kyle and Wick/ Thurso lines from Inverness are controlled by the Radio Electronic Token Block signalling system. Because the system involves frequent voice calls between signaller and drivers over the radio the film is silent to safeguard security.

    • @ChangesOneTim

Some cuttings would not have remained stable for much longer without them! Shows that these lines do get investment - and that in the aftermath of the Carmont derailment earthworks stability is being taken more seriously.
