Engine power loss at 150 feet
Просмотров 54 тыс.4 года назад
Had a loss of power at 150 feet. Option 1 was land straight ahead however my concern was the boundary fence just off the end of the threshold if I floated long. Option 2 was the grass strip parallel with the main runway but it has been extremely wet and boggy from a lot of rain in the area. Given I had partial power, I chose a gentle coordinated turn and landed on the cross runway with a slight...

Climb and Descent - MPH vs FPM in the Legal Eagle
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
With some sunny weather I thought it time to head out, enjoy some flying and do some real life testing of climb and descent rates in the Legal Eagle. Was 11:30am and the warming air combined with slight gusting and swinging winds made for some occasional bumpy flying. What follows is the last circuit of the morning. My engine is the Hummel Engines 45HP ½ VW which turns a Performance Propellers ...

Legally fly THIS without a license. NO license to fly!
Просмотров 17 тыс.4 года назад
This is the case for aircraft that meet Part 103 rules in the USA and whilst needing "no license to fly" may sound like a good idea, I would always recommend some flight training before taking to the skies. An aircraft making Part 103 must weight under 254lbs when empty. Mine was 26lbs over that limit but I show how easy it is to make the cut. Subscribe and don't miss out on the latest vids: ru...
Oil pump replacement and filter upgrade on the 1/2 VW.
Просмотров 9 тыс.4 года назад
The oil pump replacement and filter upgrade on the 1/2 VW sorted out my high and low oil pressure readings that I had been working on for some time. I blueprinted the new full flow oil pump for better efficiency and now have 20psi at idle and 40psi at 3000rpm. Even better, the oil is now filtered. Is this 100% plans-built? It looks more beautiful than most legal eagles I see online.
please get an air filter for your carburetor lol all it takes is one piece of debris to have a bad day
The ultralight people have been putting golf cart tires on their aircraft for off-field Landings for years and they are considerably cheaper and a very good balloon tire for that purpose just something to think about
you have a 2 seater plan ?
Hoping the reason for the sudden stop of videos wasn't an accident...
Do you still fly?
what engine is that ??
are you sure that filter is right. usually you can see the dirt on the outside. the eay you have it the dirt is being collected on the inside of the filter
My 1st reaction during the flight part of the video was 'carb ice'.
Very nice. I almost bought a Legal Eagle last week but it had an engine on it that I have yet seen flown so I passed. It was bargain priced but 330 miles away from my location.
I guess it doesn't actually fly, huh?
May I ask what prop you have on your Legal Eagle? I have a performance propeller on my Minimax @DTMinimax, and Dominic and I have been trying to work through performance issues. I started with a 56x24 and wasn’t getting the performance so I sent it back and they cut it down to a 54x24. I definitely saw an increase in rpm up to 3100 static. But the performance in the air dropped. Just curious what you’re running?
Are you still flying this machine?
Hello, I would like to know what wing profile the Legal Eagle uses. I only know that it is a NACA but I don't have the number. I await a response. Thank you.!!
You have a great looking LE, I love your videos. Can you comment on what kind of gas tanks you used?
I wouldn't use that pump set up on my lawnmower never mind that thing .I value my life more the depending on Empi shit parts
HI..., your Legal Eagle is really beautiful... congratulations!!! I'm thinking about an antenna for my Legal Eagle and I liked your solution. Could you give me information to build it? Thank you very much from Buenos Aires, Argentina!!!
What prop are you running?
I have taught to loosen 8 mm. case bolts arround the oil pump.
Hey Darrin,Kevin here in Oklahoma, was wandering if you run an oil cooler on your Legal Eagle,I'm going to switch to Mikunis and Scott said I would have to run an oil cooler.was thinking cooler for motorcycle, would like to here your thoughts on this.Your plane is beautiful by the way.Thx
I don't run an oil cooler. Elevated oil temperatures are far from an issue with this engine as I think other flyers have also found. Getting the oil up to temperature is the challenge.
@DCSquared thanx so much for the reply
have you posted the second W&B yet?
Not good boss, needs to idle. J
Absolutely wonderful explanation videos on the weight and balance, much appreciated! I need to do this to my plane as well, but I fly a RX550 Beaver with the engine in behind me with a push prop, so my question is...would I still be able to put my datum on the leading edge of the wing? or what exactly would be different from the calculations from a tractor to a pusher? again, much appreciated, thank you.
Ultralight should be 350 lbs empty weight. 60hp 6gal. Goony light weight can be dangerous.
I’ve never seen a speck of debris in any fuel filter except the in tank fuel filter on a chainsaw and I’m sure it was sawdust. Could you use an in tank filter or bypass the filter all together? There’s no rust inside an aluminum or plastic tank.
3:18 You don't understand how that filter is supposed to operate. It doesn't have to fill up all of the way. As long as the outlet stays submerged in fuel, it's doing its job and flowing properly. You wouldn't run it this long in an aircraft configuration, but as it fills up with debris, the resulting back pressure will increase the level of fuel in the unfiltered cavity.
Hi i would apriciate it a lot if you could explain me how to choose the correct airfoile.
So refreshing to have a pilot refer to height above the ground and not altitude as the yanks always say!! Good job on the video!
Darren, on your downwind leg what airspeed and RPM are we seeing in this video? And is this the airspeed your airplane was rigged/trimmed for?
He has the filter upside down . I would not ever use plastic filters they leak I have seen many V/W engines burn. never put a fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb. If you have a leak the pump pressure will increase the leak and cause the fuel to spray worse. I only use the Glass filters and you can buy refills in the long run they are cheaper.
Good job
air in a sideways mounted fuel filter is fine, 100k mowers in the usa run that way for decades
Great aircraft, but it does looks like pop-rivets failing on the seat-mesh could become a real safety issue at some point.
is your legal eagle an true ultralight? do you have a brs that is adding weight?
What size tires are they? What is the axle height? Where did you get the tires?
I love your videos thanks for posting them !!
Is that a Molsor engine? I think that how u spell it ? I've got 1 that I need to buy some cylinders and pistons for it has 100 hours on it but it rusted in the walls and I would rather just get new 1s do u know where I can find them it's a 93 93 I asked a vw guy and he said they didn't make vw in odd numbers and acked like I didn't know what I was talking about!! Mine has skat heads and roller rockers big push rods 1073 cc in 2 cylinders if i remember correctly so thats a stroker engine 50 hp is the ratings on mine thanks for any help 👍!!
Where's the grease to lube 😊
I didn't learn much at all. Was that your point.
My friend and I have been exploring how to get into general aviation affordably, so this was a very interesting option to review. This was an excellent, excellent walk around for a newbie. Concise, to the point, and full of information. Bravo and thank you. It's a beautiful airplane.
Why in the world would you not use brass fittings? I don’t even use plastic fittings on my motorcycles. I also doubt those fancy colored fuel lines are not approved for gasoline.
Hagen-Poiseuille law in fluid dynamics: the pressure drop through a long cylindrical pipe is proportional to 1/R^4. E.g. a reduction of the diameter to 50 % is equal to a reduction of flow to 1/16 which is rather counterintuitive!
Hi, after watching your weight and balance video, can you tell me where the balance is, and how much fuel is in the tanks? We know this is empty weight, without a pilot, but with how much fuel? I am interested in knowing the balance point that you use when you do the flight tests, within the range of 22% and 33%. In general, you should have the CG more advanced than backward... that's why the question, after doing flight tests, doing navigations, where do you leave the CG? Thank you.
Hi Darren, First of all, I really felt in love with your bobber style legal eagle ! It looks to me your eagle is a standard one, not an XL, am I right ? Just to imagine how I would fit in this little bird before choosing between a straight legal eagle or an XL one, how tall are you ? What are your performances with the 45hp half VW, cruise and WOT? Would like to know if I would be able to fly in formation with friends.
The legal Eagle is the one I would build if going the part 103 route. I’m currently building a zenith STOL 2 place. Beautiful eagle btw!
I mean locking clips are wayyyy easier lol
Nice engine! Did you make a thrust test?
Gotta give it time to stabilize after accelerating to a higher speed to get a valid check of fpm. Not saying you didn’t, just asking
Baba airplane I would like to find out more about it ,, please help ..
