    Hey! The Peregrine still lives! Just passed it yesterday, making sure nobody needed help as we passed, and reported the position to USCG.

    Still kinda not sure why you couldn’t sail in to Hawaii. You had a head sail up

    • @peregrinessailingadventure8395
      @peregrinessailingadventure8395 Год назад

      Thanks for watching. Yes, the 150 Genoa head sail was up under duress also. The clew was blown out earlier by a rogue wave over the bow and had to be tied together with Dyneema which eventually failed again. Having sewn it altogether once again, careful and safe saiing had to be the order of the already lengthy passage from NZ. With now the centre of effort all forward and no resistance from the hull, the increased winds would not make it possible to sail close to the wind as wished to make Hawaii. The USCG called and advised an increase of winds to 25-30 kts for a week to ten days, increasing in strength which would certainly blow Peregrine past all of the Hawaiian Islands, as it was already realised and charted. After nearly 50 days at sea, a decision had to be made as the video shows. I also had a staysail up that increased the center of effort forward of the mast. All of this was a most frustrating experience being pushed along with direct N and NE trades making only 2-3 kgs per day. Beyond the Islands is North Pacific open ocean with no other resources with the hurricane season approaching. The open ocean as you may know is indiscriminate, though so beautiful in all of its Nature. I love it. It is not a place for the faint of heart.....

      @@peregrinessailingadventure8395 so you couldn’t use it to help you into port? What happened to the boat?

    • @peregrinessailingadventure8395
      @peregrinessailingadventure8395 Год назад

      @@SailingLittleGooseBC Thanks again for your interest in my unfortunate story. After nearly two weeks and 1K miles of sailing right up against the steady winds from the N and NE, progress towards any easting and Hilo were impossible to maintain. Smaller and somewhat adequate storm sails were of very limited use which they are designed for, to stay upright in storms of such, a last resort in hurricane situations, short of bare poles, sea anchor and/or drogue. It was pretty clear as crossing the Equator form the Cook Islands that if the winds did continue, port would not be made in Hilo. I called Customs in Hilo to advise them of my situation, to alert the USCG. The USCG later called to verify my position, state of Peregrine's damage, and all personal information. Quite complete and thorough. After having the repaired 150 out for awhile, it was realised that if it too was torn apart, there would be no other options. It was also realised the a very lightweight spinnaker meant for mild winds might be of use if shortened out, yet risking higher winds expected for more damages. All options were considered, even sailing back down to the Marshall Islands to Wake Island, nearly 2k miles. Then the USCG called and advised safe measures, sending out an airborne C!30 out from Honolulu for status and location.
