Whether gardening is a hobby or a way of life, Gardening with Val is here to provide tips to grow healthy and fresh produce.
A time for corn planting!
Thank you for tuning into Gardening with Val!
In today's video, I go through the stages of preparing the soil and planting presoaked seeds using a solution similar to one from my previous videos and the planting phase.
I decided to go ahead and plant corn in the area that I wasn’t going originally but because I planted my peas in this area they needed a natural trellis to grow up onto. I am interested in seeing how the pea plants assist with corn growth. I will take updated videos of the growth progression as the spring and summer go on. Please stay tuned for those.

My AeroGarden Bok Choy experiment
Просмотров 277Год назад
This video was taken a few weeks ago, but I decided to upload it anyway because I found it was neat! I had intended to grow baby bok choy, but it did grow a lot larger than I had intended. But this does show that it can be grown in an AeroGarden. I am very glad that I did grow this in my AeroGarden as I’ve used it in some of my recipes that I have made for my family. My takeaways: 1. Bok Choy...
AeroGarden Buttercrunch lettuce

I decided this year to go ahead and try growing a head of lettuce and this one is the buttercrunch. this one took a little while to form the head but conditions were right in my room. As well as other factors which are: spacing, lighting, and temperature, and variety. I actually learned that it is pretty easy to grow this type of lettuce. The other varieties that thrive in cooler temperatures a...

This is my AeroGarden progress to date. I started these peppers back in December of 2022. The cayenne pepper I actually had topped because it wasn't producing very well and I wanted to see if that method actually worked for me, much better than expected! The peppers that I have growing are as follows: cayenne pepper plant, 2 - California wonders, and a corno di toro. This is actually my first a...

No bees indoors! How to pollinate your tomato flowers
😊 hello Val my name is Daniel and I came across your video because I also purchased the same raised bed you have and only had it for a year last year I grew a serrano pepper plant and two determinate roma tomato plants and I have to say they did very good have you do anything other than the banana peppers I live in Delaware I would love to grow those but not sure when does season to grow those are looking forward to seeing more videos and other stuff you are growing in your bed I've purchased some strawberries this year got my indeterminate and determinate tomato plants ready also have some cantaloupe and watermelon cilantro and lettuce not growing in my bed but in pots in in my garden I have in the ground 😊
Hi Daniel! Thank you for stopping by and checking out my channel! I am very glad to hear that the Serrano pepper plant and the two determinate Romas did very well in the Keter Easy grow system. 😊 Banana peppers should be able to grow in Delaware. I usually start banana peppers inside before the growing season begins, but I am sure that some garden centers should have some if you would like to put a banana pepper in your garden. Unfortunately, I didn’t start any banana peppers this year. I have a whole bunch of orange bell peppers growing. With the strawberries, you can grow strawberries from that runner that comes off the side. I have a whole bunch of strawberries because I did that last year. I will have to catch up on my videos soon. I am thinking of putting some legumes in my Keter easy grow system this year. The last couple years that I’ve had it, I put heavy feeders in it, and I would like to put some nutrients back into the soil but it’s yet to be determined ☺️ Please feel free to ask any more questions you might have. Keep on gardening!
My outdoor chamomile did this. When I free up some space in an Aerogarden I might have to add chamomile to the list.
They’re beautiful flowers! Funny thing is, I didn’t notice very many bumblebees, or honey bees on the chamomile flowers when I planted them outdoors. How did your chamomile flowers fair outdoors? In my AeroGarden farm 24 XL, they took up one whole garden, which surprised me. Still I definitely recommend growing them in the AeroGarden.
@@gardeningwithval I had some bees on mine. I planted a lot of bee attracting flowers so they might have been visiting everything.
Nice experiment 🌱👍
Thank you! It was fun to grow bok choy! I'm planning to do that again when I set up my winter AeroGardens! I have more success growing bok choy in the AeroGardens versus in the ground outside.
Awesome how many times did you cut the lettuce until the plant is done? I just starting to grow and learn about it. Thanks for the videos.
Welcome! I’m so glad to hear that you’re learning to grow some veg! You can cut and come again as many times as the plant will allow. I usually just let the leaves grow back to what they were when I first cut them. If the plant becomes too bushy, then I just top it. And wait for it to grow back. I’ve tried this about three times before I decided to start new. Please remember that lettuce also does get old after 45+ days. You may need to take it out and compost the plant and start over. Depending on the AeroGarden that you were using, you will get tips from AeroGarden and it will try to make some suggestions as well. I know this because my own AeroGarden gave me suggestion to compost the older and slower producing lettuce plants. I hope this answers your questions, feel free to ask more!
Why did u use distilled water and also how often do u have to clean the chambers and refill them? I have bounty elite and if I forget to change water it turns yellow and slime builds up.
I used distilled water because it does not have any minerals in it. Tap water contains a lot of chemicals such as chlorine, for example. So I use distilled or reverse osmosis water for my water changes. Reverse osmosis water is closest to rain water which the plants do prefer. To remind me when to do water changes I either write it down on a calendar or I set a reminder on my phone in 2 weeks to change out the water or top it off. It depends on the cycle that you choose. It is also important to add water when the notification pops up on the aerogardens. This way it does not stress out the plants that rely on the water and nutrients. If you are using the Masterblend for fertilizer, I usually change the water out every 7 to 10 days. Otherwise, if you are just using the regular Aerogarden fertilizers, you can just follow the instructions.
@@gardeningwithval thank u. How many gallons of water does that unit take. I want to get one but not sure if it will be too heavy for me. Thank u !
The farm 24XL holds 2 gallons each. So a total of 4 gallons of water. If you want a smaller version, there is the 12 XL model which has 12 pods to plant and 2 gallons of water total. It is tall like the 24XL but has a single side. I will attach a link: AeroGarden Farm 12XL a.co/d/3JdD9B2 There are different variations in the link above from Amazon.
@@gardeningwithval thank u !
Thank you and I hope you’re able to find the AeroGarden system that works best for you! 😊
I plan to plant this soon so I’ll definitely be busy trimming and drying them all
It is amazing to note the difference in flavor when you personally create your own spices and herbs vs store bought. 😊
I've got some growing here however the stem has grown an inch or so out of the top of the basket and the base where ask the leaves are growing from is from there an inch in the air so to speak . Any idea any?
I had similar concerns at the beginning when the bok choy had begun to grow similarly. I just left it and monitored how it was growing. Then oddly one day the bok choy leaned on one side of the cup and began to grow like what you see at the stores! My advice is to let it grow, you may be surprised! I am often surprised at how and what the plants look like :) I hope this helps!
This is amazing! 😍Did you plant one seed per hole?
Amazingly enough, this was only 1 seed pod which was a grow your own garden. Since the seeds are so tiny, I may have put 2-3 seeds in the growing medium. The more you pick the flowers, the nodes create more branches for flowers! It is great if you’d like to make teas from the chamomile flowers. 😊 I will definitely be growing chamomile in my garden again next indoor season. I have begun to grow another set for outdoors planting!
What soil type do you recommend? And how much can you fill it? Thanks!
It depends if you are an organic gardener or conventional. I went ahead and got the large bag which is 2 ft.³ plus another one cubic foot bag and I mixed two types of potting mix. But I’ve heard that pro mix is very good. Or if you want, you can make your own mix using peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, and compost mix. That’ll make a lighter airy mix. And make sure to wear protective gear when using perlite and vermiculite as it has fine particulate matter that can get in the lungs. You do want to avoid garden soil as that is very dense and it is more fitting for inground gardening. Another thing that you can do is overfill a little first year as this soilless mix will settle and compact. I hope this helps.
@@gardeningwithval I think someone should address whether the bottom plug should be in all the time , or pulled out so that you can water using a spray head on your garden hose instead of just watering using the fill tube.....I now feel that the water reservoir should be on the dryer side in my area due to me watering the keter next to all my other planters types and just plain rain filling it up....Going to try to go a solid week with the drain plug pulled.
Hi Tom, Yes, good point. It depends if you live in a rainy area then definitely keep the drain open. If you live in dryer more arid climate or the garden is protected from rainfall and want to conserve the water go ahead and close the drain plug. It is important for the root health of the plants to drain it once in awhile. You can catch the water you're draining out in a bucket and water other plants with it.
I just used the raised bed soil
@jrizzy226 is there a specific brand that you used or did you make your own soil?
I grew baby bok choy and had no problems. I do find it interesting that lettuce and brassicas don't work together. Guess you would only know that because of the way the farm works. I have grown most of my things in the smaller models and only just got the farms to play with. Can't wait but I will keep that tip in mind.
It really depends on the type of lettuce that does not like to mix with brassicas. I found an article on epic gardening that mentions that the two are not good companion plants. www.epicgardening.com/lettuce-companion-plants/#:~:text=What%20Not%20To%20Plant%20With%20Lettuce&text=Not%20all%20plants%20are%20great,cauliflower%2C%20romanesco%2C%20and%20mustards Also, on masterclass.com it suggests the same thing as epic gardening.
@@gardeningwithval Awesome, thank you, that was a great read.
So shmoll 💖
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Just grab the stem occasionally and give s gentle jiggle is enough to pollinate and makes dead ones drop
So far I have been using the "Be the Bee" tool, and also running the fan so it disburses the pollen. Thank you for the suggestion! 😊 I will plan on giving the peppers a gentle shake! 😊
Is that pump included in the system?
Yes, the pumps are included in this particular system the AeroGarden Farm 24XL’s. I am pretty sure they are included in all AeroGarden models but, I am not certain. Eventually, the pumps do go bad and you can purchase them from AeroGarden.com or on Amazon. I hope this helps!
@@gardeningwithval thx you I'm looking to get one.

Here it's cold by now as well.
Autumn is the prettiest season for me as well 🍂🍁🍂👍
Thanks for sharing. I overwinter some every year 🌶🌶🌱👍
It definitely makes it easier growing them year after year! How many seasons have you been able to regrow an individual pepper?
Awesome!
Thank you!
Where are you? S California isn't cooling yet
I'm in Minnesota. We've had some cold nights this past couple weeks.
😢 gonna hit low 30s tonight and tommorow..my peppers arent even ripe yet!...sigh....my fault for trying in zone 4..lol
Are you able to cover them at all?
@@gardeningwithval no sadly...I'm new to soil gardening and didnt think of it..lol..its ok..I like them green..I'll pick half today before frost..see if rest survive next 2 days...after that back up to 40s and 50 at night at least a week or so...I hope
😟 Same here, I still have peppers on the plants too, they’re covered- we will see though if they survive. Good luck!
I let basil and lettuce go seed didnt know they had such pretty flowers
I love mine..I too will definitely buy more!
Awesome!...you did great!
Yikes they went to town on that leaf!
They sure did! I wanted to keep this one specifically for the video. In keeping this eaten up leave, it keeps my other plants safer for a little while at least! Sacrifice the one to save the many for now. Although, I've seen a bit less those beetles were terrible a few weeks ago. They've subsided a bit lately, but I continue to do the rounds in my garden to inspect for the Japanese beetles. Thanks for watching!
@@gardeningwithval smart!...glad there's less of them now !
Awesome!...and yay about the bees!
I’m just glad they’re back. I’m finally getting more tomatoes and peppers and other veggies. 😊
Excellent explanation!..thank you!..this. is my first time growing zucchini and that helped a lot
I am glad this video helped you! Are you growing your zucchini is a raised bed or a container?
@@gardeningwithval I'm trying to grow in a 10 gallon grow bag..I have a tomato cage in it and its next to a clothes line pole I can tie string to if it really climbs
Neat! I would love to hear an update on that once it’s grown and the progress made!
@@gardeningwithval certainly!..right now just leaves..hoping in s month to have flowers I can show
Will they flower then die back when the potato is ready?...I want to try growing some next spring
Yes, they normally flower and then when the stems go yellow and die back that's when to begin harvesting. Although, I have had some that never flowered and just died back. That's when I grew them in buckets. It may have been because I never fertilized them other than compost. I will post a follow up video when I begin harvesting them. Good luck! 😊
@@gardeningwithval excellent thank you!..look forward to the next video I'm learning a lot!
What about just shaking the entire tomato plant? Would that work instead of each individual flower?
You can shake the plant gently, yes, and then place a fan to distribute the pollen. I've had so many blossoms it is very hard to remember which blossom had been pollinated. So I often go over them about 2-3 times. Thank you for your question!
@@gardeningwithval thank you! I have some raised beds but haven’t seen any bees around them. I planted some marigolds but they must be too spindly to attract the bees.
Usually, if there's a breeze outside, you should be fine. For indoors like an hydroponics system where there isn't any breeze, a fan may be needed. I have also noticed a decrease in bumble bees and honey bees where I am located. I have a lot of flowers on my tomatoes and no bees to pollinate them. I have also had to use the AeroGarden pollination tool on my outdoor tomatoes/peppers. If you have an old electric toothbrush or even a regular toothbrush you can pollinate the tomato/pepper flowers outdoors. This spring there were a lot of bees but I am not sure where they all had gone.
I got the larger model bed..love it!
I am glad you love it. I am really liking it too. It takes the thinking out of the watering schedule! I don't have to water it half as much as I do my other gardens.
@@gardeningwithval it's the best producer in my garden right now..it did fine on the 100 degree days thankfully...I'd buy more if I could afford it..lol
Thank you for making this video! One thing I had to do was pop the kinks out of the tubing for the water to flow.
Thank you for your comment! I did have that exact issue the very first time I changed out the water in the Aerogarden. Specifically, with the tubing.
Hi Val, What is the type of tomatoes your growing here? thank you kindly.
Hi Kenneth, thanks for your comment. The varieties that I have growing are the golden harvest cherry tomatoes, and the red heirloom cherry tomatoes. I got these varieties when I purchased my AeroGarden Farm. I have included the link for the heirloom cherry tomato kit for the Farm models. bit.ly/3xUyI5D When these varieties have had their time, I may purchase the plant anything pods.
Hi Val, any luck growing bell peppers? i never have any sucess in growing bells in the garden. I live in zone 8 Central florida.
I have not tried to grow peppers in the AeroGarden but it seems like an interesting endeavor! I will try that in my upcoming videos. Thank you for your suggestion! Peppers love the heat so for Florida because you're in zone 8 you can start them in the winter and then plant them outdoors after the last frost. Also, if you plant them outdoors pepper plants love fertile well drained soil. I have included a link to the University of Florida gardening solutions. bit.ly/3kfwLc1
do you thin out your lettuce plants, because they grow so big . I found keeping them a bit separate let's them grow bigger and faster.
You are correct, they do grow super fast. I mainly wanted to see what it would look like if you planted them in such close quarters. I plan to thin them out quite a bit here soon. I have 2 bunnies so they eat a lot of lettuce besides myself. :) I will definitely give them more room when I restart my AeroGardens
Hello again Val, forgot to mention that i have been using 2 aero garden bounty basics now for 3 years and they work great as weel, i like that the light extends a full 24 inches. Great for tomatoes. Keep up the great gardening.
Great tips! Thank you!
Hi Val, Just got my farm xl 24 april 1st and loving it. I'm glad i found your page, I signed up and ready to follow your lead , good luck.
Welcome aboard! Thank you and good luck to you also! :)
I'm an aerogarden and hydroponic addict..lol..It was my pandemic hobby and now im starting a outside garden this spring too. I wish for new aerogarden users they'd be clear unless your growing herbs you shouldn't use every pod space even on a farm unit your limited to a couple plants if you want easy care and healthy plants...I have 3 peppers in one and 4 micro dwarf tomatoes in the other..I am having great success growing peppers and tomatoes in half gallon kratky jars...enjoying your videos!
Thank you! I will have to do that the next time when I restart my AeroGarden with new plants/seeds! :)
I love the new logo!
Thank you!
