Illinois will never be the same without the Chief! Sad!

They should at least used a dance student who could actually entertain. Much todo about nothing. U of I alums and students were bordeline cult nuts about the Chief.

I think of the Chief every time I see the FSU Seminole warrior on horseback plant that fiery spear. Now that’s a savage warlike caricature.

So the students have to "rent" The Assembly Hall & strip the Illinois logo off the floor. Then they let in thousands of folks to remember there past. It is sad to see tradition stripped from the very people who make the pathetic university (many family graduated there) happen with taxes from those good people just having fun !

What I want to know is... 1.) Who owns the actual uniform used to portray Chief Illiniwek? I would think the university would have taken that away too when they did away wit the logo and mascot associated ith this GREAT ICON! 2.) How is it he was allowed into Memorial Stadium or Assembly Hall to perform here or at the Illini-Indian game? 3.) What is the latest on efforts to RE-INSTATE THE CHIEF!?

He's not officially a part of the University and thus not allowed on the field. However there is nothing they can do to bar someone from dressing up like him and being in the stands

70% of those at Illinois surveyed did not want the chief gone. the Board of Trustees dumped him anyway to succumb to ridiculously politically correct demands what a perverse world it is when schools can't pick their own mascots

@wimpygal8 Actually, the most current and "unofficial" Chief you see in the video is 1/2 Cherokee...awkward for you. Despite that fact though, Chief was started as a symbol of pride in the history of our state and continues to serve more directly as a demonstration of our pride for our school, through which, we proudly represent Illinois.

Bring back the Chief!

Hope the University legal office gets wind of this and goes after them. Seems to me this is a violation of the legal status of the symbol as owned by the university.

To clarify the Chief is(was) not a Mascot. He is(was) the Symbol of the University and established to represent the states and the Illinois Confederation's (Illiniwek) history. Also another note Fighting Illini was the nick name established prior to the Chief. It was stated in reference to the Illinoisans who fought in WW1.

This just reminds me of how much the Illini are missing by NOT having him perform at the games. He was an honorable tradition and I will always be flummoxed by the decision of the Board of Trustees. Long live the Chief!

pure awesomeness! he needs to return for good. and the most ridiculous part about the chief leaving in 07 is the fsu seminoles still have their mascot riding on a horse on the sidelines. The student who portrays or rather used to do the dance had to be an eagle scout, which, in his training, had to learn to dance with a local tribe. I say reinstate the chief because its a tradition that has done so respectedly throughout the years and respected by fans.

My guess as to why he didn't go out on the field is because officially he's no longer the Illini mascot. He was "retired" by the Board of Trustees in 2007 after continuing controversy as to the political correctness of a Native American mascot. Alumni and much of the student body are vehemently against this action and so an unsanctioned group was formed called "Students for Chief Illiniwek Presents: The Next Dance" And all Chief appearances are now courtesy of this group.
