What Yamaha piano do you have? Thank you ❤
So cool to have both. One crys and the other sings. Then the other sings while this one crys.
..."its got all the hallmarks of 'wifes' revenge' to me doctor...."
I cut some thin strips of aluminum tape to shim out some ferrule holes to avoid doweling and redrilling. When they nearly fit. One wrap, just on the serrations, slightly proud of the rim, a razor width will do. If you go to 2 wraps or start on the top, wrapping touching the ring\flange of the ferrule it can squirt out. Think its the adhesive flexibility with too many wraps and hydraulic when touching. It worked perfect with a wrap just on the serrated bit, down to the end. Gained a fair bit. From loosey goosey to quite tight. I found the length of one wrap, measured width and cut several extra and wrapped them all, still seated a year later with all its been through.
And I love slotted ceenter hole tuners.
No way, never seen the ones for slotted headstocks that go in the side. I'm about to try to slot and drill some cheapos to see if I can get good at it for a Rick like guitar project. I'd love to find a way to alter the 6 in the slots to work like that. I doubt they sell any not on a plate. Maybe I can fill the end of the hole a cut a groove in line.
Nice!
They were very short lived!
Catgut?
Also very epic electrification, i love it
Since when you got slippies?
Hahahah, since Mitchell’s feet are too big
Nice repair work Oy yellow dry stain with a little burnt umber mostly oy yellow added to a finish as shading and a air brush or a touch up gun and spayed on the binding and you could have matched it perfectly I have been refinishing grand pianos, fine antiques, guitars etc for over 50 years i cant tell you how many people who were experts of the trade in rebuilding and building brought there instruments fine antique furniture to me a steady flow for over 45 years they always said i can build it repair it but i could never make it look like you do im now retired now. I never had time to do a whole lot of building I just built what I needed to repair whatever I was working on but now I've built plenty in the last 8 years I'm doing the things i always wanted to do but never had the time while i was in business.😊
I appreciate the tips! However, Charles, the owner, said he didn’t give a crap about the colour match and wanted it shipped out asap on a budget, so I didn’t argue
Steel
Q: If the neck is that bowed and you're putting in all that work anyway, why not put in a truss rod?
I honestly already forget what work I did to this one 😂 but if I didn’t have the fretboard off…that’s a whole other thing. And if I did…it was partially laziness that might have prevented a carbon fiber reinforcement or truss Rod. If a guitar has already been under tension for decades, it’s generally warped ~almost~ as much as it’s going to…and thus rectifying the warp through planing the board or compression fretting, and putting on a relatively light set of strings should be sufficient.
@@Notaluthier well, regardless, it sounded good in the end anyway
@ it was a ridiculous guitar to put so much work into! So that probably factored into the decision to not put in even more!
@@Notaluthier yeah, but it would be a good one for a giveaway to someone just starting out.. like a donation guitar
Well, I guarantee it’s set up better than almost any guitar someone will buy new! When I can afford to do giveaways, I’ll consider it.
Definitely a putty knife. V commonplace in the UK.
How do you find all this cool stuff
Ridiculously, I plan on making a video soon on “how to buy WAYYYYY too many guitars”
I think the steel sounds more "Rustic" while the Nylon sounds more "Classical".
Try some silk and gut (or nylgut) strings. That would be close to what they were built for. I have the same model strung up that way.
I will try some nylgut, and silk and steel pin the near future. I have nylgut on my 1860 banjo
@@Notaluthier Aquilla makes a silk and nylgut "historical" set of strings called Ambra. The only bad thing about them is that like the originals, they don't have ball ends, so you need to tie knots instead.
I mean, I doubt those are LITERALLY from the 19th century, they didn’t make them quite like that back then(plus the neck would be bowed like crazy), but I’m sure they’re based off of the ones from the 1800s Edit: apparently they are the original guitars according to the video poster, just had some alterations and fixes done to them
They are, literally. I have about 12 Lyon and Healy guitars ranging from the 1890s-1920s, however these are both 1890s. I’m happy to vend you their serial numbers if you’d like to verify yourself. Neither was playable when I got them.
They both have newly made bridges if that’s what’s confusing you?
@@Notaluthier was their no work done on the neck at all? How are the necks in such good shape after all these years, without truss rods or anything in them to adjust over the years?
@@Zack-bl2gg I heat straightened the one with steel strings 8 years ago. I did a neck reset on the nylon string one. Often necks don’t really bow so much as pull into the body and create a ski-jump out of the overhang ethic is fixed in a reset.
@ interesting! That makes a lot more sense lol. Sorry for the miscommunication, I guess i’m just jaded from people on the internet touting fake stuff as real stuff, plus the alternations to the original guitar. Sound comparison was still cool, I’ve always been a fan of nylon on classical. I personally would be interested in a gut strong comparison as well, since that was what they were used with historically. I don’t know much about the sound of gut strings and how they compare to nylon/steel
why not both just smash them together and it'll sound better. lol jk
You do have me thinking, what about a 12 string that’s half nylon half steel
Love that style from kay
That can't be the original neck. Gibson didn't make a 12-string until 1961. It's a refinished L1 body with a conversion neck.
I believe the neck is original, but the headstock was extended/modified
@@Notaluthier The neck should be hollow if it's original
@ well, I wouldn’t know. I haven’t had the fretboard off of many prewar Gibson’s. But if you saw the video, you’ll notice that the neck has a spruce core…a highly unusual detail, I though, that perhaps was added during the conversion, and would indicate a previously hollow neck. Please point me to a source where I can read about these hollow necks because it’s proving difficult to find any examples other than one mandolin after a cursory search.
@ I also just don’t see why someone would make an ENORMOUS neck like this and then butt joint in a headstock extension. All indications would point to a modified original neck over a scratch build
@@Notaluthier Agreed.
Why choose just enjoy that fact we can have both
I like the steel one
With this guitar, Elliott Smith, makes his first record roman candle, i think..❤
Yessss!
Both sounded great, but I preferred the nylon strings.
They both sound gorgeous! Why don’t guitars sound like this now?
It’s because they are overbuilt now!
what song are you playing?
Something I wrote
Now try gut!
Excellent trick, with one of my all time favourite albums playing in the background. ❤️
How do you afford all these gems? Beautiful!
Let’s just say, I’ve only ever bought two guitars that were playable when I got them.
If we didn't need steel. Then why invent fire?
Buzz lightyear ahh guitar
Both! But nylon for real
Steel all the way! Hey, was that Mogwai at the start?
You wear your humor like a crown don't stop doing what you're doing
steel sounds crisper
One of each, please, and thank you.
Both sound great! But the nylon is for sure the winner
This is close to my ideal guitar. I actually want , (if I have to build it myself) an ES335 Type Hollow/Semi Hollow Body Style Full Acoustic. No Pickups. This one of yours is very nice!
A bold design idea! I’m into it.
I’m always going to feel the brightness of steel in my soul the way nylon just can’t hit. No offence to Willie Nelson & Trigger.
Oh damn!! Good reel!! Hard to choose. I love nylon and that was my initial choice. But as i read the comments, and listened to the riffs over again, steel crept in. I suppose it comes down to atmosphere. Are you able to swap string on these guitars? Are they exactly the same otherwise? That'd be wild as I thought guitars were made with their strings intended.
People speak firmly about string types and when they were introduced, but people have a tendency to be wrong about almost everything. These guitars were supposedly made for Gut strings. And some have such minimal bracing that anything tenser than nylon would be a mistake. And MANY guitars were ruined by heavy guage strings of later eras. These two were built the same as one another, the greatest risk to either of them having steel strings is the gradual bowing of the neck, which happens to any piece of wood under 200lbs tension for decades. Some can handle it, some can’t. If these two, the one with steel strings had a bowed neck when I got it about 8 years ago and I heat straightened it and strung it with extra light steel and it’s been great ever since. The Brazilian rosewood is, frankly, wasted on nylon strings, because imparts a potential for bell like chime that’s rarely achievable under low tension.
Nylon
In your hands, with your current technique?…the steel. Now you raise that wrist up and file and polish those nails up just right and work on some Giuliani arpeggios, Carcassi and Sor etudes, Villa Lobos, Barrios, Bach, oh baby we’re talkin NYLON!!!
Hahaha, you pay the bills, I’ll take some lessons 😉
@@NotaluthierDeal!
Well nylon strings tend not to destroy old guitars so…
I’ve had steel strings on that one for 8 years so far, nary an issue. mind you, I’m not stupid. So I know what strings a guitar can handle. I have dozens of SUPPOSEDLY “pre steel” guitars and many of them can deal with steel.
